Old French village and town scenes…there should be a car, van, lorry, or bus in there somewhere, if not, just enjoy these old French photos

Interesting to see, I think, a Morris Minor in the 2nd postcard. I rarely saw them when I worked in France. But wonderful to glimpse back at a France that was so very different to the UK at the time
Thanks for posting.

Here here! Some cracking selections of pictures there: carefully and well-chosen. Thank you. Robert

Over to you Froggy. I’ve no idea…

Thanks to some French contributors, here’s the story. It’s a Ford Type VAF 69MW with an Assomption coachwork, and belonged to the Johnny Halliday Circus. Initially, it had a matching semi-trailer. Here’s the text of the ad’ of the auction in which it was offered on sale in March 2018:
Ford
Serial number 177A
Truck of the Johnny Circus de 1972
French title
For his 1972 “Rock’n Roll Circus”, Johnny had planned a phenomenal convoy. It was not less than 54 vehicles that plied France in the service of the star! Among these, a Ford Type VAF 69MW L’Assomption truck - the name of the bodybuilder who made them for circus people and fairgrounds - towed the artist’s caravan.
This one has survived the years and we offer it today for sale. Unfortunately without a caravan, the tractor is in its original state. Never restored, it will be sold with his vintage certificate, the same one that accompanied him during the tour.

Old nostalgic photo. The village day out…all in their Sunday best, in cars, coach, and camion.
Not a mobile phone or tablet between them…the good old days ?

At the time that photo was taken I think they would have been lucky to have a phone in the post office for the whole village! Perhaps the Doctor might have hod one but few, if any, private homes. The French phone system was a mess. Up until the 60’s it could take months to get a phone line in France.

A bit off topic but the very popular (in France at least) Johnny Halliday died last year. Now the family are squabbling over his estate. All rather sad but that’s families, eh?!

There is certainly matter to squabble about, in this very case!

Morning Dave,
Some cracking photos’s there mate, I presume you have been collating them for your “winter stock”?!
It would have been a rough ride for the passengers travelling in that truck fitted with those solid tyres!
Speak soon mate, take care, Pete

The 4 th photo is Wavre in Belgium, a little town just south of Brussels, and by the similar looks of the building on the right, the second photo is just a more recent version of photo 4 by looking at the cars .

Anyone recognise this restaurant

Hi Fergie,

great to see you posting these old French nostalgic pictures.

You asked if anyone recognises this restaurant. I don’t, but I still did some research.

Could it be this building - now a tad different, in the village of Jayat, France.

Now called - L’Ain Tres Table, 339 Route de Bourg, 01340 Jayat, France

Recovering a lorry from “going over the edge”.

This French picture would be more fitting coming from Fergie as he seems to have a few shoeboxes of them. I guess this is also up to Froggy or Michel to identify the lorry.

The “gone over the edge” truck is an electric battery-powered Sovel. Many were used as refuse trucks as late as the 1960s. Second must be a Renault.

Hi Johnny,

Hope you are keeping well, spot on with your research it is indeed Jayat, and a popular stopping place for many lads, here’s a pic taken one winter from the restaurant looking at the parking lot. I wish I still had the Globetrotter in the photo.

Regards
Richard

Thanks Richard. A great picture. Was this photo taken before the A39 was built?

Cheers
Johnny

I like the way the roof is going around the telegraph pole! Brilliant.

A nice batch of Berliet TLM 10b or TLM 10 R (Michel will know…), registered in 1958 and belonging to the Onatra fleet.

One more picture of the Onatra fleet, showing from right to left the same Berliet TLM 10 R; 3 Willème L 10 T; 3 more Willème L 10 T repowered with air-cooled Deutz V8 engines.

There’s the picture!

Is that the same Onatra known for the yellow livery Paul?

Cracking pic, cheers
