Satnav question

did the old tom tom satnav 6200/6250 have to be connected to a phone for live traffic. tomtom seem to say it doesit all of an internal sim now have they updated thier models■■?

im asking as mine has died after 2 years and i am sure i bought one of them but had to connect my phone via bluetooth to get the traffic.

Has the traffic bit improved. i only used it once on mine and it went mad driving me round and round in circles in newcross/deptford kept deciding the road i just left was quicker.

6200 and 6250 both use a sim card for traffic subscription. I have the 6200 and he only difference in the 6250 is free lifetime subscription where you pay a yearly fee with the 6200.

The traffic part is generally pretty good and route you to avoid traffic problems a fair amount of the time. But it depends on the system knowing of road closures and that doesn’t always happen with roadworks, of it’s not notified to Inrix I presume they get most of the info from, then it doesn’t know about a closure and keeps trying to send you down as closed road.

520 and 620 were traffic only via smartphone connectivity as far as I can tell.

You only get live traffic if you subscribe to it pay £15 (I think) a year and then no need for phone. Unfortunately lately both Tomtom traffic and google live traffic have been horrendously inaccurate so I’m mostly using them as digital maps to plan my route on. One of our heroes the other week went round and round and round and eventually came back 14 hours after leaving the yard on a run which takes 10-10.5 because his sat nav couldn’t figure out a way around the A14 closure (j13-21)

TomTom sell various models. Some come with a year’s Traffic subscription (renewable at £15 a year or £35 for three years), some come with “Lifetime” Traffic subscription included in the purchase price. Some (both subscription types) require a mobile phone to actually connect to the Traffic service, some have a built-in SIM to do it without a phone. You pays yer money, you makes yer choice…

My 6200 has the built in SIM, but recently its been dropping the traffic connection after an hour and needs a reboot. Not sure if its a software glitch or the unit is going dodgy. Traffic is one of the best features.

Just if buying second hand, just check it is a 6200 not the 600 series which some people try to flog as the former.

Have you tried removing the sim card and cleaning the contacts and reinserting it?

On the 6200 it’s under the serial number sticker next to the side of the SD card slot.

You need some fine nose tweezers to remove the sim card though.

Thanks, didn’t know SIM was removable. Took one apart to change the screen previously but it was a major nightmare due to glue. Will have a look.

I’ve got the 520 and haven’t been able to use the traffic, for some reason its stopped working even though it says I have it until 2027!!!

I think the 520 relies on your mobile phone for its Internet connection - instead of the built-in GPRS SIM that the 6000 series use. It may simply be that your phone (or more specifically the carrier/contract that you are using) doesn’t allow this mode of operation.

Yep the 520 does require tethering to a mobile phone for traffic.

So it would depend if the carrier allows tethering as some don’t.

I’ve had the 520 a few years now , live traffic info has been brilliant and saved me hours ,loads of times
Although i have had bluetooth conncetion uses on my previous Huawei phone , to overcome that i had to use my phone as a mobile hotspot to connect and get the traffic info
I recently changed my phone from huawei to samsung and since then i have had no connection issues , the phone connects to the tom tom as soon as i switch tom tom on , I don’t even have to start the tom tom appp
the moral of my story is huawei phones are not compatible with tom toms for traffic info but samsung phones are

I had a P30 pro and never had any issues connecting it to my Tom Tom.

My phone is a Samsung and my previous phones have mostly been Samsung phones, I wasn’t having issue’s with it until about 2 months ago, as it seemed to just stop working.

My phone connects as soon as I turn on the Sat Nav, but, for some reason the traffic doesn’t appear, if I have the map up in mydrive traffic is there.

I’ve had a look at the phone settings and it appears Bluetooth tethering was switched off, I’m hoping its just that otherwise I have no idea.

I’ve been doing a bit of digging. The 520 communicates with the Internet via that MyDrive App (unlike the units with their own built-in SIM). Lots of users have been seeing similar problems to yours (loss of Traffic service on the Satnav but the App still works - many even seeing total loss of connection between Satnav and phone).

One possible solution is to not use the MyDrive App to do the Bluetooth pairing but instead pair the phone directly to the phone using the phone’s Bluetooth connection. The only caveat is that you will also need to turn on “Bluetooth tethering” on the phone (it’s off by default) AND remember to re-enable it every time your phone is rebooted or comes out of “airplane mode”. I think you can still use the MyDrive App for route planning etc doing it this way, but you will lose the ability to have text messages displayed on the Tomtom screen. Sadly I don’t have a 520 so can’t test this.

I’ve found the best solution to phone / connection / live trafffic issues with the 520 is to use your phone as a Wi Fi hotspot and connect with Wi Fi then , not bluetooth

It’s my understanding that connecting using Bluetooth through the MyDrive App (which is the way TomTom tell you to do it) is indeed very fishy, but connecting the phone natively via Bluetooth (effectively bypassing the App) works fine. A potential issue with using Wi-Fi is that the Satnav might think it is connected to a regular Wi-Fi Router and attempt to update itself, thus potentially chewing through a fair chunk of your mobile data allowance. But I defer to the voices of experience as I don’t have a 520.
