What is it with these guys who use these things Don’t you know how to use a road atlas
Truck driving is an age old profession. For years drivers have got by without these expensive wastes of money. If you really need one of those then give up because you are not cut out for the job.
I never needed anything like that in the UK, Europe or anywhere else. I came the this country and started driving trucks here less that 3 years ago, I cover an area about the size of all of Europe and have one road atlas, I don’t get lost, I even give directions over the CB to people who have lived here all their lives.
Get real buy an atlas and stop wasting money on toys
My PDA/GSPS is smaller than most maps, and it can get me to anywhere in europe!
right down to the street and most times street numbers.
I am glad in a way I am not like Pat who knows everywhere, everything and everyone! The great thing is I dont have to stop to look at a map or even ask someone where smith street is in Manchester because my PDA tells me. As an added bonus it doesnt argue back when I get it wrong it just tells me another way to get me where I dont have a clue where I am going!
TC are you on commision, this gizzmo sounds top dollar. Might have to do a few more DIY jobs about the shack to get missus to put one on santa’s list
Could be an A 2 Z bonfire very soon what about keeping mapping info up to date though

Maps are old hat and are mostly wrong! GPS is new and always right!
A Euro GPs PDA system can be got at about £400 or less
you can spend plenty of pennys on maps that need reading to find out where ABC limited is in Another town! which is the usual drop most of us have!
Crikey what’s happened with the thread? I didn’t post all those (although I did click the SEND button a few times because the site’s running at tortoise speed yet again).

I’m glad its not just me then Wonder how quick i could wreck a PDA
Money on toys and gadgets is never wasted. There are lots of things that are a waste of money, mortgages, heating, food, clothes, medicines for the kids, etc but never, ever is money spent on gadgets wasted. Gadgets are a necessity, without them life isn’t worth living. Doesn’t matter that maps are cheaper, they are crap because they don’t have buttons and lights.

Oh it’s also a lot safer to use a sat nav than driving thru (Americanisation there ) a strange city center with a map in your hand/watching the muppets in cars/finding a road name as a reference then fining it on the aforementioned map
& you cant fit a reversing camera on an A - Z
or a T.V

mine makes me money.
I arrive at addresses quick enough to on average complete 1 or 2 more per week.
Thats say, £50 for the run and £15 for the hitch. £65 a week. Given 6 weeks its paid for itself. Anything beyond that is pure profit.
That and the MP3 player function keeps me entertained when hitching.
Bit of a no-brainer really. The atlas gets used for when the pda can’t be recharged mind you, but it doesn’t guide me flawlessly through the final urban leg of the journey without checking addresses etc.
I went on holiday to the US of A with a Michelin map of America something like 20 miles to the inch and drove coast to coast
I suppose a sat nav would help for those “oh ==” moments when you miss a junction. They are probably clever enough to get you back to where you should be.
I still prefer to ask for directions and in France it is even more fun
Seriously though. Asking for directions abroad is easy. just shout a bit louder and they can understand you.

Yeah! While you’re at it, get rid of power steering, syncromesh on gearboxes, power assisted brakes and clutches and air con. We can’t have anyone making the job easier for you can we?

One of my favourute pastimes is to go into Dixons, PC Shed etc and ask the assistant a slightly technical question, seeing the look of fear and terror in their eyes is great sport.
Or go and stand next to the most expensive PC, TV, Hi-Fi in the shop and when the assistants rush over hoping for a big sale ask them about something costing about £1.99 instead.
