Sat Nav and GPS ! Are you all whimps?

Get real :exclamation: buy an atlas and stop wasting money on toys :exclamation:

Yeah! While you’re at it, get rid of power steering, syncromesh on gearboxes, power assisted brakes and clutches and air con. We can’t have anyone making the job easier for you can we?

Paul

Syncromesh gear boxes
There is no such thing is there      I drive a modern Volvo but even that has a 13 speed fuller crash box in it. Power steering is a safety feature, Air con is a nessasary thing in this country where temps get into the 100’s. Maps cost a few bucks if you replace them every year (a pittance compared to those satalite navigation things.

I could also point out that a driverwho is watching a screen is not concentrating on driving. Truck drivers do have them here but they are usualy the ones who get lost and ask for directions after they have messed up

To be a good driver you need an almost photographic memory when it comes to routes, if you follow the directions using such a device you do not take a note of how you got there, if you have to actualy concentrate on where you are going it sticks in your mind, try calling the destination and they will give you directions that are a lot better that a satalite.
Does your expesive thingy tell you the bridge heights and weight limits  does it tell you that you can’t make a certain turn because your vehicle is too long

     I love a good row

It may interest you to know I do have a photographic memory …It’s just that the negatives come out blurred sometimes

Yep, and that’s me when I try to navigate using maps. I either have to stop frequently (since I don’t know my way around properly yet), or I have to look at a map whilst driving, which is obviously dangerous.

IMHO, using SatNav is actually safer, since you can forget about concentrating on the navigation, and focus on the driving instead. For a newbie like me, that’s a bonus.

In my case, I’m a newbie, and I’m fed up of taking 2+ hours longer than experienced drivers, simply because I don’t know my way around.

How many maps (that you can buy easily in the UK) show weight limits? And even the Trucker’s Atlas only shows bridge heights on A and B roads (and a few frequently-hit ones on other roads).

Pat Hasler:

Does your map? It might give you a hint, but unless you’ve got incredibly large-scale maps, (or specially-made maps with this information added), there isn’t enough detail to determine how tight the corner actually is.

I GOT MY SATNAV 2 MONTHS AGO NEVER SEEN THE NEED B4
ITS AMAZING HOW QUICKLY YOU COME TO RELY ON THEESE THINGS AS WHEN IT PACKED UP IN LONDON RECENTLY I WENT ON A RIGHT TIZZY  UNTIL I REMEMBERED HOW TO USE MY MAP BOOKS AGAIN
BUT THEY ARE FANTASTIC BITS OF KIT TO HAVE    AND SUCH A ■■■■ VOICE

I could point out that a driver using a sat nav system doesn’t need to look at a screenor a piece of paper as he/she is guided in by voice commands so is safer than a driver using a map as they dont have to take their concentration off the road or find somwhere to pull over in a busy city center to re-familiarise themself with the map

Turn your caps lock off, there’s no need to shout!!

Well I use good old fashioned maps, and if I don’t have a map of a certain area, I’ll drive to the nearest services/garage/PO/shop and ask/look/etc. :unamused:

This job ain’t rocket science, so why do you need a rocket scientist’s kit??

Name me 1 modern truck that doesn’t have “rocket science kit” on controling the engine/gearbox

It’s just progress some day all motors will come with it as standard just like power steering

WOW!! you have power steering■■? I am a mere mortal.

I am not worthy.

Dan.

No thanks needed I see it as my goal in life to educate mere mortals

Ive heard about this pwer steering stuff, I doubt it’ll catch on tho!

Mr Fibble

You say that taking two hours longer to find somewhere is not what you want :exclamation:
In another post you are complaining about being paid 10 hours for 8 hours pay    Presumably with sat nav you would only want 6 hours pay for doing 10

PAT if you dont like sat nav vote for someone who will turn the satelittes off…also when you were at fed ex (volvo) did your taillft have remote control   :frowning: doh

The idea is the atlas gets you to within 2 square miles of your tip and the pda gets you to within 2 square feet. If you just have an atlas you have to stop and ask someone where such and such street or place is which can be a pain finding a suitable place to stop and then they don’t know. It’s not like in the states where your customer is prolly the only building in 20 square miles of rolling prarie! What I’m trying to say is the pda is a nice addition to an atlas but should not replace old faithfull with bridge heights.

cos its fun

Two points.

  1. The two situations are different. When I’m running with another driver, it doesn’t take me a lot of extra time, since I’ve got someone to follow.

  2. When I’m running on my own, it’s more likely that I’m doing deliveries, and being late is a PITA because all the customers are always complaining. Yes, you might say that it doesn’t matter, but just as I’d rather not be known as someone who ratted on the other drivers, I’d also rather not be known as someone who is useless and is always late. Perhaps I’m just too naive in taking pride in doing a good job. Using Sat Nav just gets me back on a par with the other more experienced drivers.

In fact, in some ways, the motives are the same - fair number of hours’ pay for the correct number of hours’ work.

Oh, and I’m a teckie. Toys good.

I’m with Pat, there’s nowt wrong with maps. (And I do multi-drop with a 44 tonner).

Mind you , I might only be saying that cos I can’t afford to buy sat-nav, having a family whose gobs need filling first.
