Don’t write off salaried jobs or day rates until you speak to the company.

We advertise based on salary, calculated at 10 hours guaranteed pay a day (breaks are paid). Most work 8 hours (including break) or a little less. If a driver works over 8 or does a bit extra for us we always bung in a few extra hours pay. So if they work 10 hours they normally end up with 12 hours pay or a bit more If they have dug us out of a hole.

We may be the rare ones in this case, but it’s always worth going for a chat first before you decide to give it a skip.

Is this general haulage? The “8 hour or a little less” bit suggests not as my gut instinct. I would always consider a salary for a job thats either an in house transport operation (not for profit), or for a haulier dedicated to working on one contract. Reason being you pretty much know what you are doing everyday and the chances of any surprises are slim.

Problems arise with salaries when you are being run by a transport office for a logistics outfit doing general haulage, where the traffic planners have targets and trying to balance more plates than they can manage. Thats when you start getting the “your the only driver in the area” or “its gone ■■■■ up we need you to recover a job 100 miles away” or “a last minute jobs just come on” calls 9hrs into your shift and your getting shafted without it costing them a penny in wages to keep you out. Then when you do manage to finish on time one day, they will try and use that against you another day as if you owe them.

I would never work salaried on standard haulage for the said reasons you’ve listed , if I did I would be going home at lunch time on a Thursday [emoji23][emoji23]
