Safety Boots

peirre:
Before any recomendations … Who’s paying for the boots and whats the budget?

I will be paying for them, and about £60 - 90 depending on how comfortable/durable they are. I honestly don’t see these ones lasting me the year out. Not a cat in hells chance :smiling_imp:

Cheers

Had both DeWalt and Caterpillar boots.

I’ve gone back to Caterpiller, I found the sole on the DeWalts actually too soft for me, but I do plant etc so need (prefer) something ‘tougher’ on the sole. Got good ankle support too, anyone thinking of that??

If monies no problem look at the timberland pro series:

Firstly, may I apoligise for being boring!

If the company you work for (Not relevent if you are self employed) state that the wearing of safety boots is part of the health and safety policy then they should provide them as per the HASAW act 1974 in particular the personal protective equipment at work regulations 1992. If it is deemed after a risk assesment that the workplace or enviroment requires the wearing of safety boots then only the person/company who rated the hazard as a risk can ensure that the correct standard of boot is worn.

Example of an HSE court case:
The case against a company for an employee who had a work related accident in the work place which resulted in him/her suffering from a long lasting crushing injury to his/her little pinkies.

Court to injured employee: Why were you not wearing safety boots as per your companies safety policy?
Injured employee: I was, I got a cracking pair from the market for fiver.
Court to the Employer: Why was he not wearing safety boots as per your policy?
Company: How the ■■■■ were we to know he would buy a ■■■■ pair from the market?
Court: I fine the company a ■■■■ load of dosh for not ensuring that its employees are safe in the work place.

I’m aware that there are lots of loop holes round this, i.e. If you want to work for me then you must prove to me that your PPE is upto the required standard and if its not then your off!!, however any company worth its salt will almost always provide the PPE required to do the job safely.

As already mentioned some companies will provide boots that meet all the basic requirements but the boots may not be fashionable or indeed offer the best comfort so a good company should at least offer to subsidise the cost of a pair of your own choice if you do not wish to wear the ones provided. (The company will have to ensure that they meet the relevent safety standards)

I did apologise up front for the boring nature of the post, but I hope it gives some direction.

skids:
Dont bother with anything from shoe zone, cheap and comfy but dont last long at all.

My last Shoezone pair lasted well over 2 years, still got them but got a newer pair for work, and the current ones are getting on for a year and still as good as new. Also, I wear them a lot, not just for work.

We buy the ones we want and take the receipt into the boss and get the money back.

You wear them out dancing as well do you?

I wear them pretty much everywhere I go but no dancing has been, or ever will be, involved.

Thankyou.

The crowd I work for will not allow us to wear anything other than what they supply. The reason, someone twisted his ankle in a big way and sued the company and won. He was wearing dealer boots (as supplied at the time), but it was argued that they did not have sufficient ankle support, so we now have to wear the most uncomfortable lace up boots they could find on the market at the cheapest rate. On the plus side we get new ones on a regular basis as the inners wear out before the uppers or soles, so I have a pair for the garden, a pair to walk the dog, a pair in the car for just in case and some more in the garage.
A mate of mine had an intruder in his garage a while back and despite there being all sorts of goodies in there, the only thing taken in the burglary? His work boots…

I have Caterpiller steel toe capped boots, they were about 80 quid in Arco, but put them on company account with company discount and company paid £25 towards them, think they ended up costing me £20, so worth an ask for best price.

I normally wear Groundworks Steel Toe Cap trainers, they’re really comfortable for walking and driving, don’t even know you’re wearing steelies, but did save my feet when a demountable box decided to seat itself when I was about to put the leg up. Loaded with kitchens / bathrooms for B+Q, no idea of the weight, but it hurt the bit of my foot it hit before reaching the steel toe cap, but nothing broken and the steelie stopped it going any further. Had to have someone mess around with the air suspension to get it off my foot.
These are around 25 quid from most places.

Don’t think anything’s going to make standing for 10hrs any less painfull though, after a while you MAY get used to it, but I doubt it, it’s easier for some people than others.
Also, if you’re not moving around, put some card board under your feet.

I have Karrimor Safety Trainers sportsdirect.com/karrimor-sa … ens-181088
They are very comfortable, not heavy and look quite tidy. And cheap! My pair have lasted me about 16 months so far and are only looking shabby, still intact and functioning.

Hi All.Just a question out of curiosity. What is the situation in the uk re safety clothing. Is the company responsible for supplying them and to what degree, minimum or full kit.
When i worked in Holland most companies seemed to supply a fairly comprehensive set of equipement.
Up here i drive in an iron ore mine so we have the normal safety equipement but most companies, like mine also supply more or less what you want in the way of clothing.I have 2 sets of summer clothing inc jackets, trousers, tshirts, sweatshirts safety trainers etc.For the winter i also have 2 sets of themo clothes inc trousers, jackets, gloves, socks, sweatshirts, long underwear, hat, boots, etc. All paid for by the company.Reading on the forums it seems there is a large difference in what the company is obliged,or prepared to supply.
In Holland it was also possible to claim tax relief if you bought your own safety clothes.Mike

Hi All.Mucker,Yes in most of the cases the jackets, sweatshirts and t shirts have a company logo but this is the case with almost every company in Sweden and if you work for a reasonable company, why not.If the company has paid out £200 or £300 for your kit then you can accept a little logo. The underpants merely have the word ‘‘welcome’’ printed on them.Mike

Which side do they say “Welcome”?

Hi Mucker.Only on the front because at my age, first i remain optimistic for a last fling and second no-one is required to use the tradesmans entrance at my house.Mike

sorry, I had to ask.

The reason they are usually branded, even the trousers at out place have a tiny little tag sewn in one of the seams that has the company name on, is a tax thing. It makes it exclusively work clothing as your not likely to wear it to the discotheque, other places are available, on Saturday night when it’s branded.
