"Safer lorry scheme" starts today

shep532:
It seems some quarries and construction companies want to comply

I hope the quarries and construction companies up their rates then to pay for all this extra crap they want glued onto the lorries.
The line “you won’t get any work without it” is total bollocking too.

Einstein - I’m in no way a cycling vegetablist, but really your little bullet pojnts dont hold alt of water.

VED or whatever they are calling it these days, is based on emissions, so no, cyclisy shouldnt pau for it. Should a pedestrian have to pay it? As they have to use our road networks too, by crossing them.

Cycle insurance, great idea. While we are at it, can I have some insurance to cross the road,x2 for my pushchair please. Not likely!

You said yourself, annual testing is for motor vehicles. Not a pushbike.

Cycle registration plates? Never happen. They would be too ■■■■■■■■■■ to be seen.

Now, a test to be able to ride on the road, might not be a horrible idea. If only we had a free way of doing it so it could include EVERYONE.

F-reds, I don’t hate cyclists as I ride for pleasure myself and yes it would be completely impossible to police any registration scheme, VED licencing scheme, Insurances etc and annual servicing of bikes but as drivers of motor vehicles, be it cars, HGV’s or PCV, Vans etc etc, all of the above have to comply with the law regarding these issues while the cyclists get away with paying nothing.

As I said more work needs to be done to educate the cyclists who think they can completely disregard the traffic laws at will. Only then might it reduce the number of accidents. The rush hour traffic in London is mental at times with far too many vehicles fighting for space.

Cyclists are road users and therefore the Hiway Code applies to them.

Rule 221 - I Believe that if a cyclists compromises their own safety by ignoring rule 221 they should be legally responsible for the final outcome.

All cyclists should make themselves aware of rule 221

Now then. That is some blue sky thinking!

Similar to the cyclist in the truck idea what about the truck driver asked to ride a cycle in London going through red traffic signals, shortcutting across pavements, cutting up vehicles, ignoring all traffic signals and squeezing in the inside of lorries and busses to get to the front

alder, there are CPC schemes available in the London area were HGV drivers are required to spend 7 hours riding round the roads on bikes. Apparently it will then count towards the Driver CPC card if the training is carried out by a JAUPT recognised training centre :unamused: I watched a TV news report on it a while ago.

Actually these courses are now pretty much UK wide. Mate of mine runs them in Wakefield

This whole “get a lorry driver on a bike” thing is redunant I believe. We know the dangers of cyclists and people doing stupid stuff, its those people who need training!

Although I agree with you - my mate tells me that 9 out of 10 who do the SUD course come back with a totally different attitude towards cyclists after the course. Maybe it helps them appreciate just how vulnerable a cyclist is - I dunno, I haven’t done the course yet

Boris says the window conversion in the passenger door will “only cost about £1000.”
Any tipper operator will tell you that’s a lot of extra loads to pay for it, about two days turnover per truck. Add that to the cost of paying the driver to ride a pushbike around London for a day, retrofitting silly sideguards and underrun bars, “vehicle turning left” audible warning systems, extra cameras, and now wasting fuel by driving around in circles it would seem.

As a retired C+E driver with some years exp delivering to points in and around London, stores, supermarkets, bricks on a flattie, hiab jobs, etc. I always feared the arrival of a moped on my nearside, most cyclists I found were ok.

I really nearly did squash one or two people and on a couple of occasions had time to get out of the motor and confront the dumb people.

I have from an early age been interested in cycling and still cycle regularly, and I think that ones attitude to and awareness of other road users is really important.

Red traffic lights, who me? got a witness?
