Sacked!

I think the biggest problem now is not driving with the phone clamped to your ear but driving whilst looking at the screen, scrolling through social media etc. Only a few years ago when phones only made calls, it was distracting then but we seen drivers today doing 60+ on the motorways eyes obviously off the road because something is more interesting on Facebook.

You lot remember that agency bloke who drove over a family because he was dicking around on his phone? Do you condone stupid stuff like that?

Agreed mate. Making a phone call is bad news, but texting and scrolling through music etc is far worse in my opinion.

But The Maoster is correct regarding the stupidity of the chap in the original post. Shouldn’t have given Bob and Doris the opportunity :unamused:

Firstly numerous reasonable studies suggest that phone conversations alone are a distraction. Also a large part of the radio communications involving emergency vehicles are actually carried out by a crew member not the driver.I’d guess that CB’s would be a similar distraction.

As for removing your eyes from the road ahead the risks obviously increase in line with speed and needs to be avoided as much as possible.Leaving just mirror checks. While the rest of the controls needed from lights,to wipers, heater and radio etc can/should all be no problem to use without taking your eyes from the road to do it.

However then we’ve got designers going from the old radio fitting standard,in which volume and tuning were both widely spaced at opposite ends and well seperated with big push button tuning pre set buttons set in a row between them.To jumbling the radio controls together among small closely spaced buttons making it more likely that people would look at the thing to use the controls. To the point where we’ve now got ridiculous ‘infotainment’ systems involving loads of visual menus on a screen which need to be navigated to control numerous items. Then they call that ‘progress’ while nicking people for using the phone and texting. You couldn’t make it up. :unamused:

The point made regarding the increased fine for using a hand held device was that it is purely for revenue, 9 points plus the existing fine at the time would be a better deterrent. The government have been losing revenue over recent times regarding vehicles, which is why recently road tax was increased on many cars. Tax revenue from smoking is also down. Smoking was used earlier by someone in this thread, which is why I had mentioned it. The government needs tax money so it is all linked.

Drink driving is totally different to using a phone. If I saw someone ■■■■■■ up driving all over the place in a dangerous manner, then I am confident that I would call the police. I have never said " Don’t EVER ’ grass ’ ".

So now we get to the next question; Why are you so angry? Is it envy that you aren’t me? (perfectly understandable). Maybe your wife is getting banged in a fashion that you wish to perform, but don’t have the skills? Or maybe you cant get a partner because you are a small man and have confidence issues?

Either way I don’t really care mate, but I hope you find a way to stop getting so worked up. It’s bad for your blood pressure

Poor form fella, I never said you in particular went down the grass is a grass route, others did.

I still disagree with your tax comments as the revenue is nowhere near, not even slightly. Fuel yes, mobile phone fines nope, never.
As for the rest of the personal stuff, well, whatever makes you happy. I agree with most things you post mate, just not this and, as I would hope you would know by know, I will say my bit if possible.
I’ve never been personal about it with you, I’d never mention your wife etc to make a point as I feel I can do it with out but hey ho.
I’m not angry at all, just a little bored of some of the loud mouthed bull ■■■■■■■■ that peddle the same alpha male garbage, of which I would not put you in that bracket.
If anyone on here still thinks it’s ok to have a phone clamped to your ear in this day and age then you are too stupid to be behind the wheel or too selfish, either way you deserved to be “grassed” on.
On that note, and so I can get further futile abuse, I also am of the opinion that whatever the punishment for car drivers it should be double for HGV drivers, but then that would mark you all out as having some kind of responsibility for being in charge of 44 tons…

@ AndrewG , sorry mate, I admit I was being a bit shy there.
Might try and loosen a button or something, or maybe don’t post pictures of your car in Spain you bar steward as some of us live in the rain swept tropical northwest!!!

Well seeing as it was me that questioned whether taking a call non hands free was questionably dangerous as they like us to believe, maybe it’s me that has ■■■■■■ you off.
I don’t (use non hands free) btw, I just asked why it was more dangerous than a hands free call in terms of concentration, and saying that driving with one hand in a modern pas truck is not necessarily dangerous…imo.
Still not keen on grasses and self appointed road marshalls btw, so if that sounds like I’ve over size testes (again I haven’t  ) can’t help it, again it’s just my opinion, which is the whole reason for a forum.

I tend to see Beaver’s point on revenue raising, anything to do with the Government, MPs, Police, H&S, Tacho rules, or most officialdom, I also am cynical and tend to look for the REAL agenda…in other words I believe ■■■■ all they say. :bulb:

I’ve said it before Rob, studies allegedly show that the part of your brain you use for driving, you use to visualise the person you are talking too.

I personally can’t see it myself, but the laws are there for the muppets who can’t drive and talk to a passenger or listen to music whilst driving. I bet a pound to a dollar we all know someone who drives who can’t do that let alone manage a phone conversation in hands free

Then we have parents who strap children in the back and keep looking backwards at them with every little murmur they make instead of pulling over or having them in a front seat if suitable.
People are stupid sadly.

But that’s my point Rob, there is no need whatsoever these days to have a phone in your hand.
I still think any call is a distraction, way more of a distraction than a brew or cigarette.
That’s why I think the punishment was increased because these days the only reason you have a phone in your hand is not for a call, it’s for scrolling etc. If I get a call I press a button and explain I’m driving and that’s it, will call back when I can.
We’ve just got a new fleet of M.A.N’s, they have Bluetooth and message alert so when they are not too busy telling you that your trailer indicators aren’t working despite having just dropped said trailer they read your messages out at the touch of a button, however you cannot scroll them on the screen whilst driving and you can use the phone via the wheel.

@ beaver…I’m not intelligent at all, it’s probably the Yorkshire in me as a Leeds boy that make me say it as I see it, so no offence meant and non taken at all. Life’s too short for the internet!!

Yeh well as I said, he deserved to be sacked for his stupidity and disregard for the law, knowing full well the Police are ■■■■ hot on hand held phone use. As you say no excuse in those terms, but I still question if it is as dangerous as it’s perceived or made out to be.
Now social media, texting and all the rest of it needs more attention, resulting in less attention on your driving, so you’ll get no argument from me on that one.

robroy:

Here in New Zealand it is an offence just to hold a mobile phone whilst driving for that very reason.
Some studies were done and the findings were that phone users are worse than drunk drivers. Sadly the law change made a new problem in that people are now causing accidents by suddenly swerving off the road and badly parking just so they can answer the bloody phone. I have a hands free head unit in my work truck but never wired the thing in as it is not that important to me. What phone call ever could be■■?

Priorities people.

sacked for using mobile phone correct its illegal no ifs or buts out-----------------

That Photo was taken 15 years ago and the ‘Member of the Public’ has only just sent it in. Get the ‘Member of the Public’ to appear infront of the tribunal and identify them selves. Too much dodgey evidence being given against drivers. Anyone can manufacture a fake photograph. Too much gossip… PROVE IT ! !

Bunch of gossiping old spinsters. The phone was switched OFF. Oh yes, I know, The driver is always wrong, It’S always the driver’s fault. Self righteous pratts !

There is ALWAYS two sides to every story. Nobody seems interested in listening to the driver. You have all written him off…Sounds like he must have some kind of disease or something and we all know that you are all perfect and NEVER DID ANYTHING WRONG did you ? I’m bloody glad I don’t have you lot as mates !!!

I started smoking in 1954. Smoked 20 to 30 a day most of the time. This broadcast is NOT from the grave. Just to prove that I am one of the few who hasn’t been brain washed by the chief medical officer. Don’y believe all you are told. Look at both sides of the story…THINK FOR YOURSELF. I think you will find that some of us were quite balanced in our posts on this subject.

Just saying.

Totally agree. What’s amazing is that even with driver-facing cameras (seven eye) these idiots still insist on answering the bloody phone of grabbing it when it tinkles with an incoming text.

Best just switch the ■■■■ things off, so they cannot be ANY kind of distraction.
Forget “Hands free” as well. A heated argument with a planner or TM might lead to a collision in it’s own right imho.

I understand the polizei are releasing some police tractor footage of daft drivers today.

It’ll probably be added to this page, along with the continuing media blitz against Truckers everywhere.

I won’t condemn the media for such propaganda though - as it accentuates the driver shortage! :bulb:

You’re most likely to not die of cancer smoking like a chimney - if there’s no cancer in the family to start with.
Meanwhile, it’s been over a decade since I gave up myself (25 a day for 25 years up until that point) and the only ongoing effects I feel is shortness of breath, especially when walking uphill.

I wasn’t brainwashed either , started smoking at 14 , I’m 75 now and 6 weeks ago II had half a lung and part of the chest wall cut out due to cancer . It ain’t much fun I assure you , don’t count your chickens . Dave

Some 50 years ago, I worked for a man who was a SERIOUS chain smoker. Only Kensitas Plain,un-tipped, and his claim to fame was that a box of matches lasted him for over a month! He lit his first cig as he got out of bed in the morning; all day he lit the next one from the stub of the previous one and put the last one out as he got into bed. If we were in the yard, one of us would get sent to the local petrol station for a fresh pack of 200 and I often said to him that ‘I will never believe smoking causes cancer while you are still alive!’
He passed away aged well over 80!
