Running the engine to keep cool

digbydog99:
Hi all just wanted other peoples views on if we think its ok to run the engine to stay cool say your on a week of nights for example and in this heat you would never sleep without the aircon going would you find it acceptable to leave the engine running while you slept?

Cheers muchly

Perfectly ok in my book.Cabs reach temperatures of over 60 degrees and that isnt healthy. It may cost diesel but its a hell of a lot cheaper than wrecking your truck or killing some innocent car driver because your over tired and make a mistake.Oh and working on the continent is not really a safe idea leaving the windows open at night. Dont know how many of you guys have ever had to park up on the A2 Germany …quite frankly no-one gives a ■■■■ about each other. Its everyone for himself. No good bieng a nice guy you get swallowed up and spat out.So if the guy next to you doesnt like it …tough ■■■■.Generally I do try and park somewhere quiet and where i dont disturb others if its possible, but if not tough!.I have a refridge unit behind me so im used to the noise. But guarenteed if i get a night when the coolers not running, some ■■■■ will park next to me and have his running.lol thats life.

read an article in a truck mag a while back…the journo was doing a drive with a trucker in oz…he said the biggest impression was a truckstop full of trucks all with the engines running all night to keep the a/c running.

I would never leave the engine running at night i always leave the drivers window open a bit and the roof hatch open if it is very hot i leave both windows open till i go to sleep i always manage to get to sleep as said earlier very few people have aircon in the house in fact i hardley ever use my aircon even when running as i do not like it.Also in the winter i would not keep the engine running all night as i all ways carry a thick blanket to go over my quilt just in case the night heater packs up and this always keep me warm i think people are just getting too soft now a days i will just add i only work in the uk so it never gets really cold and i work for my self

You make Europe sound like the wild west…

When I did show work a lot of the time was in hotels because there were a few of us working but most shows on my own were spent sleeping in the cab and most summer shows were very hot, I found the windows open and the roof open, sleeping in the buff on top of any bedding was fine, but then it doesn’t get anywhere near as hot over there as it does over here in summer, it has touched 100f several times in the past few weeks.

Fat people often need mechanical means to regulate their body temperature. They already have a high carbon footprint (as well as a great big fat one !!!). That said, if you need a fan to keep cool then you need a fan , just leave it running.

Wouldn’t dream of leaving a truck engine idling all night in the UK and find those who do, even for more than 10 minutes, extremely irritating. I don’t even keep a night heater running all night in January. Too ■■■■ noisy.

60+f unhealthy, really? I’d say 16C is an ideal sleeping temperature. As i sit writing this at 1.00 am in my dormer bungalow back bedroom/office its 27C (80.6f) and 25.7 in the main bedroom. I find anything above 24 (75) a little warm for sleeping.

However, when in Thailand, often up to 40*C (104) outside during the day, I find setting the air con at 26 (79) very comfortable. (But again I don’t keep it on all night).

I have central heating and air con in my house, so it’s only right to have the same conditions in my workplace and where I sleep (my lorry) when I am at work, therefore when it’s cold I run the heater and when it’s hot I run the air con.

My company doesn’t provide any engine off heating/cooling system, so the big 15 litre one stays running and I sleep soundly and wake up ready for a day’s work fresh as a daisy, no matter how hot or cold it is outside.

You’re in the wrong job. :unamused:

16C is ■■■■■■■ Baltic. 22-23C in the house is a comfortable temp for relaxing and sleeping.

Bang on.

It would be a massive waste of fuel, also my xf turns itself off after 5 minutes, so there would be no point anyway!

Set the cruise control and pull the ‘increase speed’ stalk until the revs rise slightly above idle. The engine will no longer shut off after 5 mins. :bulb:

The 3/5/10/whatever minute idle shutdowns are easy to overcome. Apply the trailer park brake, pop the red line off and release the tractor park brake, the engine will run all day/night.

Interesting tip! Would’ve never thought of doing that. :bulb:

I would run it otherwise I wouldn’t sleep. If the gaffer doesn’t like it then he/she should get a decent spec motor with some sort of cooling device…

It’s worked every time for me :sunglasses:

Try sleeping in the cab during the day in mid summer, its like sleeping in a greenhouse hence the engine is left running. I’d rather cost the company £11 than die or be over tired the next shift due to lack of comfortable sleep.
The technology is there for a reason so use it.

If the gaffer doesn’t want to pay for the fuel then he’s more than welcome to pay for an air conditioned room somewhere.

I leave it running until i’m comfortuble. But all night is a bit much.
I met a guy in france that did fridge work (just fruit and veg, no meat), He rigged up a tumble dryer flexi pipe from the trailer to his cab with a 24v electric motor on it. It worked a treat, nice lemon smell in the cab too.

Here and there i’ll leave it running for 5mins, generally only at the end of a shift if im really hot but all night is taking the ■■■■ somewhat.

Got a air con pod been a life saver Over the best few days,
Ask your boss to fit one for you

Or you could just do this
