Running the engine to keep cool

Hi all just wanted other peoples views on if we think its ok to run the engine to stay cool say your on a week of nights for example and in this heat you would never sleep without the aircon going would you find it acceptable to leave the engine running while you slept?

Cheers muchly
Kev

I wouldn’t leave the engine running all night but I would run it for 10 mins or so just to cool things down of an evening 2 or 3 times :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Not really. It’ll use a fair bit of juice on tickover all night plus the fact you’ll ■■■■ all the other drivers around you off.

i don,t have aircon in my bedroom and manage to sleep

a very good friend of mine named bunchy used to run a 530 Scania all night it the hot weather . never turned it off.

Come on, now! This page is entitled PROFESSIONAL drivers’ forum. IMHO the only time it’s sensible to run the motor all night is in the winter with the radiator partially blanked, when you’re in danger of dying from hypothermia and the night heater’s packed up.

Im sure if you mentioned to the other drivers around you that you was going to run your engine for 10 mins to cool down im sure they would be ok with that as they would prob be doing the same. I wouldn’t run it all night that’s for sure

You could always buy yourself a 12 volt fan.

Think if i was an owner driver or small haulier id look at those a/c pods

It would be a massive waste of fuel, also my xf turns itself off after 5 minutes, so there would be no point anyway!

you would think in this day and age that the a/c pods would be a standard fitment

You can spec this feature without the pod gubbins on new FH’s as a cost extra, dunno what the tech is like, called I-Cool.

I’d run the engine for ten mins here & there if it was boiling but not all night & not once I was in the bunk, just open the sun roof & it’ll cool down eventually as night approaches.

What a waste of diesel… 1.8 Gallons (0.2g/h x 9) = (8.1830 Ltrs) costing about £11.00

Buy a 12/24v fan for less than that

Cheaper still - get a Punkawallah :bulb:

Don’t forget to factor in a few quid for a decent set of jump leads. Those fans used to eat batteries and I find my air con pod does the same.

Slap a wet flannel on your face and because you’ve been working really hard all day you’ll be asleep before it dries out

Ha ha ha … You all need to come over here. During some weeks in winter my engine runs almost non stop 24 hours a day from Monday or Sunday evening untill Friday night, with the exception of when I am in a loading bay for a short period, which is also when I check oil and water etc. During hot summer nights the engine is yet again running 24/7 to keep the A/C going.
