Running bent in the 1980s

newmercman:
I have a story about running legal that I find quite amusing, we got a new transport manager who insisted we could do the job legally and he wanted legal tachos off of us or else we were out the door, he and I had already clashed after I defected my lorry for a dodgy tyre before Xmas and found the same tyre on it when I returned to work in the new year. He told me to take a UK shunter to load my trailer at Perkins Engines in Peterborough, it was a 280 MAN that had no high split on the 13spd Fuller and I turned around and brought it back to the yard and told him I wasn’t going to Peterborough in it. I had a very nice, nearly new left ■■■■■■ 142, so I wasn’t happy about taking the old dog of a shunter out in the first place, but the lack of a splitter made my already bad mood worse. He got in my face and told me to take the MAN or I was finished and started giving it the big un in front of the boss man who went mad and told the TM to behave and get my lorry sorted Pronto or he would be the one that was finished, after that I was on his hit list.

So the running legal thing started, so we all did it as requested, as also requested we phoned in in the middle of the day each day, except when we shipped into Calais late Sunday night, we carried on until we had done a 9hr day, rather than park up and leave in the morning, so the middle of the day was now 3am, so that’s when we phoned in. Of course the office was closed then, so we phoned the TM at home, there were three of us running together, so the first one called at 3am and when the phone was answered by the half asleep TM my mate told him where he was and that everything was going ok and that was that, theTM didn’t quite know what to say and put the phone down, so we gave it 15mins or so, just enough time for him to nod off again and the next one called, this time the TM wasn’t happy and asked my mate WTF was going on, so he told him that as we were running legal now we had to run nights in order to get to Italy for clearance Tuesday morning and we would be sleeping while tge office was open. He was not amused. This time we gave it a good half an hour before I called in, just to make sure he would be back asleep and my call would wake him up again, he was screaming blue murder down the phone at me!

Next night we done the same, he asked the first one to call if we were still running together and if we were then one call would be enough, obviously he was told that no, we had split up, so he sighed and put the phone down 15mins later the next one called in and he answered on the first ring, trying to beat us at our little game, so I never bothered phoning in, imagining him sat up waiting by the phone all night for my call. On the Tuesday after clearing and tipping we had to ring in for our reloads and we had all split up by then, so when I called and asked the office girl to put me through to theTM she put me through to the boss man himself who told me to behave and stop tormenting the TM, I said I was only doing what he told me to do and he just laughed and told me to ignore him, it was his firm and he made the rules and we were to carry on as we had done before. I don’t think I ever had a conversation with the TM again until he left some time later, he hated my guts lol

Don’t you just love those that have no idea what is entailed in your work, yet still insist on telling how to do what you are doing, and insist the way you’re doing it is wrong

as this is running bent not legal and taking in acount the era it comes as no shock to me we are hearing what we have.
it may be taboo for most but i would bet 98% of the people reading this thread have had a grin and a chuckle and tempted to have a comment.

That’s so very true

Carryfast I’m not bothered by elogs, they’re coming whether I like it or not so I’m looking at the positive aspects of them instead of crying that the sky is falling in.

It’s called moving with the times, although for the record the firm i pull for is switching to elogs and has been for a while, I still have a paper log book, I plan to keep away from elogs for as long as I can.

Also you have it wrong about the 8hr break as you can defer the 2hrs for a couple of days and have only 8hrs off at night.

No one would survive long enough to finish a game after all the bleedin’ arguments he’d start.

Blimey their regs are as mad as the EU ones. When is a 14 hours on 10 hours off regime not a 14 hours on 10 hours off one.

If I’ve read it right they can also split the 2 hours down into a minimum of 30 minute segments or split the ‘10’ hours ‘daily rest’ down into 5 2 hour ‘cat naps’ or 5 1 hour cat naps and 1 hour of watching the tele. While the ‘deferred’ 2 hour rest period also then seems to magically disappear by calling it 20 hours off over the two days which is what they should/would have had anyway. :open_mouth:  Or have I missed something.

Although having said that the 2 hours deferred rest rule is obviously made with the intention of knowing and compensating for resulting lost sleep within the 8 hour period,by having to add it to a following 8 hour period. :bulb:

While on that note I’d bet in the real world there’s going to be a lot more knackered Canadian drivers having to max their hours with E logs than there were taking some extra sleep time under log books. :smiling_imp: :unamused:

Having said that, like here, reduced daily rest won’t change the max daily driving time and therefore distance limit. It only allows rest to be traded for duty. :bulb:

Why Carryfast can you not just accept that you had misinterpreted the rules.

Elogs may not only be to stamp out bent running under log books, but they will also allow for easier quicker and accurate transferring of driving data, pretty much the same as Digi tacho’s. This will allow those large fleet operators in the States to keep a track of what their drivers are upto prior to the log books returning when complete. I don’t know that’s just a thought.

When did the Haulage Industry stop running bent exactly, I here drivers every day
“Ended up tipping off the card”
“Had to pull the card to get back to the yard”
“Did 11 hours driving”
“Let me sit on the bay last night and I was loaded ready to go in the morning”

It’s still as bent as it ever was, who are you trying to kid, try keeping up with the paddy’s.

The point is, back in yesteryear we had ways and means of keeping a legal appearance. What people are doing today isn’t running bent, it’s just plain stupid. You wouldn’t nick a fifty pound note and leave a written confession in its place, would you

As nmm pointed out the ways and means like disabling tachos were counter productive when the foreign plod knew the score. In a regime in which they ‘wanted’ to see the ‘admission’ so they could determine the amount of ■■■■ taking and if within reason they’d turn a blind eye with the fair expectation of a thanks in return in the form of a small kickback in whatever form. :bulb: While it’s obvious that they then threw their toys out of the pram when they realised that too many people were taking the ■■■■ beyond acceptable safe levels.Like one hitters to Milan let alone further south. :bulb:

A bit like the biker video I posted earlier in which the Frogs were happy enough to let people drive at 120-140 mph on their autoroutes but got fed up with people doing 180 mph + on one wheel on a bike for example or 200 mph with a lambo.Among other issues like people not being happy with a glass of wine or beer with their dinner but no the muppets had to have a bottle of wine or a few litres of beer and then driving off up the road. :unamused:

Company I work for are 100% legal. No ifs or buts and excuses don’t count, reasons though are took notice of!

To be fair that’s in large part because the pendulum has swung back too far the other way. With the authorities taking the ■■■■ in the form of ridiculous EU driving time limits and confusing counterproductive break and daily rest rules and low speed regime with gestapo levels of enforcement, surveillance and detection. The result being pointless criminalisation of what would/could be a safe regime together with the lose lose situation that the daily rest regime does nothing to help the issue of tired drivers especially in the case of commuting type jobs.

There comes a time in every thread Carryfast hijacks where he just keeps going on and on, sending people to sleep. I actually dozed off reading that list post. We’ve reached that point. A Carryfast motto ‘Never use 1 word when you can use 150 instead’

To be fair tho I’m probably falling asleep as I did a one hit run from Chippenham to Avonmouth earlier. Gruelling
