Running 12v appliances off 24v

This has probably been asked a hundred times before but can I run a 12v cig lighter fridge off a 24v cig socket without damaging anything?
Thanks

It will run, but after about two seconds all of the magic smoke will come out, and once that’s left the appliance you can never get it back in again.

You need one that says it will run of 12/24. Just bought a new compresor fridge that says 12/24.

Please tell me this is not a serious question!
If it is, you surely aren’t bright enough to be let out on the road with anything other than a bicycle with stabilisers.

Actually I seem to remember having a 24v input / 12v output dropper thing years ago. I am sure the chinese will make something, search ebay is my suggestion.

Actually there are loads of them on ebay ebay.co.uk/itm/401868130369 … Swg~BZ5hr6

Halfords had a 24v one, cheers for the advice

You have to be the most negative poster on Trucknet. Not one of your posts is helpful or positive or adds anything to a thread. You must’ve had a hard miserable life to be the only bloke on a hot summer’s day, walking around with a black cloud over him constantly. :unamused:

Dunno?
After all, there is a lot of competition out there!

I do see his point .
I think it’s because he does not suffer or tolerate fools gladly, (not referring specidfically to the o/p btw, but tbf it was a bit of a daft question  )
A bit like me but even less tolerant of such…if that’s possible .

You’re confusing me with someone who cares!

So why exactly is it a daft question?
Should I just plug it in and see what happens?

I found myself at the last minute lumbered with a truck for a week that is extreme poverty spec. It has no fridge and no 12v socket.

I’ve never encountered a truck without a 12v socket before that I have wanted to run a fridge in.

I know however that certain 12v plugs are compatible with 24v sockets such as sat navs.

I already have a 12v fridge, and wondered if I could use it in there somehow, perhaps with some kind of adapter.

Not something I’ve had to research before. Asked advice, received advice, followed advice. Sounds like a pretty good system to me.

If only I had been born out of a side locker like some though I don’t know how your heads fit through

No don’t just plug it in and see what happens…unless you have the Fire Service on stand by.
It aint a phone charger, it ain’t a sat nav charger, it’s a fridge, and unless it has a dual switch (12/24) if it says 12 (as you say in the title) it’s 12, if it says 24 it’s 24.

We dont all of us know that much about electricity. I think that your stuff will work. Its the AMPS that you have to worry about. I once plugged in my T.V. it worked fine until I started the engine! Then the smoke appeared.

I meant should I have just plugged it in rather than asking advice in here?
Why is it daft to ask first?

The satnav adapters convert to 5V and the electronics is smart enough to detect if it is connected to 12V or 24V. The adapters clearly state what they can be connected to.

It is not that daft a question really. I thought you meant is there any way to make it work, which apparently there is if you convert to 12V, although a reputable brand of converter would be advisable.

I think it goes something along the lines of a greater voltage will produce a greater current with the same level of resistance in a circuit. The higher current level than what a circuit is designed for is what will blow fuses, melt wires and possibly fry electronics. There is no guarantee that a fuse will protect the fridge if it is rated for 12V, so probably best not to try it unless you wish to sacrifice it in the name of science.

Thanks mate, that’s interesting about the sat nav chargers, I knew some things can plug in to 24v so was just asking if there was a way to use the fridge before going and spending £100 on a new one.
I’m now £100 lighter.
I didn’t plug anything in, was just being sarcastic for the pair of big heads above.
Thanks for the reply

Mate…I apologise if I’ve offended you,. especially as I know the far end of f.all about electronics myself,.I just thought that it was an obvious answer to what I perceived as a daft question, but there you go.
If I came on here asking if there was any way I could put diesel into a petrol car, I’m sure you would think the same,.even if you were not a mechanic…so not a case of being a big head really is it?
