Royal Mail NDC shift patterns

Some jobs just come up at NDC at Crick. Just wondering what the shift patterns are like? Potential for overtime etc? And yes I’m aware that everything is timed to the minute.

Well I’m a bit out of touch with royal mail now but no doubt it will be fri-mon nights random at hell start finish times.
As for overtime if it’s anything like the depot I worked from it was hit and miss.
basically you applied for the duty you wanted to cover on overtime and depending on how many hours you have worked that week and who else applied. If 2 people applied to do the same overtime duty then the person with the least amount of hours that week got the shift.

It’s one of the best paying jobs out there but it’s not all about money…
It really depends on the duties you can get and as you will have 0 seniority you will be left with the ■■■■ for 30 years+ + +

Oh and if you like Xmas you will soon learn to HATE it working on the mail [emoji2957]

As Drover says, they have funny rules about OverTime and aren’t straight forward - but nothing is with RM

RM runs on Sunday afternoon into nights too - Not sure if NDC does Sunday afternoons.

If you get the job, join the CWU - They are the reason the pay rates are so good and the working conditions are what they are.

Yeah I’m aware of bits of it. I used to work for them but that was 15 or so years ago so I’m just seeing what’s changed. I see the seniority hasn’t.

It is often not possible for full time RM staff to pick up the longer OT shifts, such as the ones over 12 hours in length.
This means that covering on agency - gets you access to the duties that actually belong to a senior driver - should their duty have built-in scheduled attendence on it, making it up to 12+ hours.

I had no problems picking up the longer night duties during Jan-March last year for instance, but this was out of Rochester running INTO places like NDC, Croydon, Heathrow, and of course the best of all - Coventry.
Coventry duties - were by far my favourite whilst working @ RM A four night spread doing these - netted nearly a grand a week top line… That’s 4x12 hour shifts - not five! The duty might be 13.5hrs with 1.5hours deducted for breaks, net 12 hours paid @ £19.48ph… £935.04 I challenge any driver here to beat that for a four day week!
RM won’t let you work more than net 48 hours in a week however, - with the upside being that there’s more to go around if there are say, 8 such duties (which there were at least…) you can make 10 blocks of 4 shift weeks out of what was once 8 duties @ 5 shifts - before the 48 hour limits are applied… An extra two duties for the lucky lucky people who got to pick up one of these goldmines over christmas…
Only these “extra two” were the dross though - as they were very tight for running times compared to the other main six… The main six duties had you up there 3 hours to fit a 90 minute break in - perhaps in new kit, or at least a tractor with a night heater and bunk in. :sunglasses:

This is exactly the reason my pal turned them down last year. Was given 9 dutys to put in order of preference, the 9th duty he put down was the worst. Tursday to Saturday, nights, basic 8 hour shift. When he questioned if it would change they said NO basically as it worked on length of service.

Royal Mail up here in West Yorkshire is impossible to get on,Iv been trying over 10 years and only seen them advertise once,I sent off a cracking cv and letter and glowing references but still didn’t get an interview,

If you’re just starting out as a full timer - then you are best off as a “floater”, where you will be allocated duties to cover as if you were agency. Any shift, any length - you’re expected to do it.

After a while, a duty might be advertized on the board that will always go to the applicant of highest seniority…

You might not bother, because you’re 99th out of 100, with the top ten seniors having been there 40-50 years…

DO bother though - as these old timers tend to be set in their ways, and it might even be one of their retiring duties that has come up “dead man’s shoes” and all.
The other “night drivers” for instance - already have duties, so if one of them vacates, and that particular duty doesn’t have much docket built into it, or has lousy rest days like mid-week…
You might find the other senior drivers boycotting it, leaving it wide open to you who ended up being the only applicant, the other mid-seniority drivers, deciding that they don’t want any “upheaval” in their life at this point…

Alternatively, you could just stay on agency, and make yourself available on a VERY flexible basis… Some of the duties you’ll get - will be dross - but the point is you’ll always be given regular work, ongoingly as the agencies like to say… :bulb:

Get in there on agency, get your face known. RM are a bit isolationist when it comes to “new driver tryouts” when they have not even seen them before… :bulb:

There’s a genuinely decent TM at NDC these days, James.

Mind you he tends to win most arguments by virtue of being about 8ft 3 and 30 stone. Sounds like a bassier Barry White.

I applied weeks ago,did all online stuff and then the dreaded virus hit us.
Nothing not even a blank, i will be up for any of their shifts at that money.

Is it monthly or weekly pay? Back in the day when I was there before it was weekly.

I have three mates who are full time in Cov i will ask them now pal

It is Monthly pay.

RM letters used to be “Weekly”, with RM “Logisitics” being monthly.

You won’t be putting any letters through letterboxes - so forget the pipe dream of weekly pay…

Was weekly paid HGV driver before. That’s why I wondered

It is weekly on agency

Apparently this an agency recruiting on behalf of RM.

Has your current firm got a “no moonlighting” clause in their contract?

If not, then if you have enough hours to spare in your driving week - you could always sign up with an agency, and ask them initially for “just saturday nights” or something similar - which you’ll pay 45% tax on, like I did when I was overlapping working @ RM in 2018 with Waitrose. The RM work came to an end the following march, and I stayed on at Waitrose ever since, and now have no intention of going anywhere else, as I’ve got all the work I can handle, with a substantial pay rise coming from April as well, at least for midweek night rates…
