Garbo2018:
When I used to pull the P&O trailers, the majority of their trailers had the standard UK airline couplings, but occasionally I encountered ones without them, so out came the palm couplings. There should already be a set in the truck, but if not, just ask your gaffer.
Check the tyres VERY, VERY carefully if you are picking one up from the dock. I’ve lost count on how much time I’ve wasted waiting for a fitter to come out after collecting one because of a shredded tyre!
Shunters (especially the ones at Teesport) can occasionally drop trailers in such a way that you can’t get the unit high enough to catch the pin with the fifth wheel. If that’s so, just catch one that’s flying about and get him to use his Terberg to lower the trailer to your desired height, or otherwise, five or ten minutes of very heavy slow winding!
Have you actually got a lead for a job on RoRo or are you just picking random types of haulage work to ask about on a whim?
You appear to be taking a long time to get any type of start in the job I (and others) notice.
I’ll take ya bait Mr R [emoji23][emoji23]
BUT, Funnily enough…[emoji38]
I feel interpersonally my day has gone well, so can only hope they felt the same, only snag the 2yr rule, so that’s outta my hands.
But I hugely respected their attitudes towards life, their drivers and my wish to get a solid footing to build from.
Sooooo I’d be very VERY happy should they say yes.
As for your ‘long time’ point…
Cinders wants the shoe that fits her is all, no different to anyone else bud, and as an advocate yourself for standing to your own cause in life I’m sure you know what that means, we get one chance to find a doc amongst the nettles, and I really would like to hope today I’ve finally found it.
Been through some chaff, an been chaff meself, now it’s wheat time [emoji28]
Having read benjie’s discription of how his interview went and how he feels how his possible new employers regard their employees I think he has had an interview with A2B!

NOOOOO chance, they wanted 60yrs experience last time I ventured in their direction, either that or they knew I was coming some how…[emoji38]
Nope, this time Mr Beau, it wasn’t the butler with a ■■■■■, but twas a good shout [emoji16]
scaac trailers, thats going back a bit, southampton or portsmouth, i did portsmouth, some of the old brown ones were a bit rough, but the newer ones were lovely, the service vans on dock were gents of the first order, very helpful even with unit troubles which were not their job, good work usually and reload out of the steel works at stocksbridge shefield way, always spare dunnage for the steel out of stocksbridge, a good chinese just outside stocksbridge steel works, did i mention i spent a lot of time at the steel plant at stocksbridge, all with a 280 berliet, no good for pulling your socks off but a good cab and trailer brake on the dash, so never needed a brake reline on the unit, a long time ago but remembered with fondness, and the chance to try the sports cars on the dock heading for the channel islands,
Things I always carry
Winding handle
2 inch m8 bolts for winding handle (get a handful as if stored on catwalks or steps they will get stolen
Although most trailers have Lights on them now a set of round lenses and both large and small single and double bulbs. No one will thank you for getting a fitter out for blown bulbs
A small crow bar to get the Curtain pole out of the rear Mechanism
Palm couplings
A winding handle for straps
Bungee straps and cable ties for hangin number plates and tying up loose items
Spray grease
Lump hammer
Grab a handful or interchange paperwork at each port
Be prepared to turn a blind eye minor defects all carriers hate putting things right in the uk and will normallonly do the bare minimum
DO NOT EVER ■■■■ OF TUG DRIVERS . They will forever remember and will leave trailers at max height and tell every other subbie why and who ■■■■■■ them off . As a rule they will normally help you out
Any questions feel free to pm me

Got the wrong end of the stick as usual, for some reason i thought the thread was going to be about Rolonoff skip work

Gent, MUCH appreciate, the offer [emoji1634]
Lol I’ve no fear of changing bulbs, sorting shizzle on the fly if the company’s happy I do so, and I’ve the ‘cough’ appropriate tools lol
A mate was telling me if it’s baled waste they use some heavy metal wire to hold it together, said to have a gooood check as best you can under the unit/trailer before pulling outta those sorta sites as you ‘can’ get the odd entanglement issues…[emoji38]
Thanks again though man, some very useful shouts there [emoji41]
the maoster:
^^^^^ I’ve never seen a shunters touching trailer legs mate. If it’s too high it’s generally because the lunatic who dropped it raised his suspension for some bizarre reason before dropping it.
Or because the trailer suspension has settled to the bottom, most ports and rail terminals have proper camera surveillance so if you scrape a trailer, report it, or you will be job hunting again really soon.

Just to add always replace the board as a lot of the operators will fine your boss if left on deck always count and make a note of straps on the CMR . Most trailers will have straps and ratchets with them but keep about 15 in your side locker . If you load something just remember that a driver will have to deal with it the other side and they can ■■■■ things up for you guys this side . Purfleet has a website that you can check the trailer is booked in if you arrive with no booking you will be sent away and there is no parking for miles around there. In tilbury when u go book in ALWAYS take a phone ,pen and paper and a peg for ur nose if it’s busy . If ur details a wrong just wait past the last window and call for details and then go to next available window when you have the correct release pin etc other you walk away it join the back of what can be a long cue
Cheers Chester, you sound like a man who’s done this a good while lol [emoji1634]
Really is a lot too this type of work, makes me really appreciate how much brain works involved.
Real baptism of fire which I hope I could get too grips with fast enough…
Not too sure how many of the lands ports I’d visit, but I do sense I’ll be seeing that’s neck of the woods a lot, only drawback as I’m trying to get outta Essex, not get deeper into it [emoji28]
Normallny you need coupling adapters, trailer legwinding handle with a bolt, lenses and a set of double and single contact bulbs.
Check the security of load, check the trailer for damage, check the paperwork.
Never had problems with trailers being dropped too high or too low
Harwich/Felixstowe and any associated others as needed, for a large player in that type of work.
As for which company’s trailers, I’m at this point none the wiser except to know its whatevers sat there lol as I believe they don’t have their own.
You mention coupling adaptors bud, I’ll hopefully assume we’re talking for the suzies?, in which case I’d be ‘assuming’ if so they’d be supplied with the unit…
Good shout on bulbs, as for winding handle, I’ll retort an obvious here I’m sure but, for why?
As said in me into, please excuse the probably obvious, but it’s all a learning curve so if I look a ■■■ asking, I’m happy [emoji1]
If pulling out of Felixstowe will need to get a RHIDES card.

No worries been on and off them for about 25years. there’s nothing too taxing with them just can be hard and dirty work more often than not there’s no real distance involved an trailers for the north will normally be shipped to Immingham . Don’t forget if you go Felixstowe your first port of call will be port office for Rhides card if you don’t already have one and that’s not open 24 hrs . And 1st thing you remove is your palm couplings as they won’t be on there long if you forget them . Harwich is good you can park overnight in the port as you can unit only around the trailer park in Felixstowe .

Again huge thanks Chester, big Big help, really do appreciate it[emoji1634]
Gonna need a bigger note pad I reckon, especially if I’m gonna add some of me own to your 25yrs worth [emoji28]
Be a case of see/know what’s with the unit equipment wise, then as you gents have said, maybe build a bit of a personal arsenal to overcome some of the quirks I’d no doubt encounter, borrow a winding handle of another trailer ont Dock stylee [emoji23](that’s a joke BTW before I get nailed[emoji28])
Cheers man, Yeah I’m in no doubt about the filth either, believe a lot of their works bailed waste so I’m ready there, two pair of gloves will be bought, an no doubt 200kg of 5th will have been scraped up trailers nose for good measure so I’m gonna see what uniforms on offer, if not its £2 trackies off tesco an bin em as they get nailed [emoji1]
Guessing most Roro loads are not high value perse, so seals an stuff won’t be as much of an issue as they are on box work?
robroy:
You need to let us know WHEN you get THIS job…to silence the doubters
And you need to let me know what odds I’m running at(moaster has normally crucified me on that by now? [emoji28]) before I commit to an insider trade, as I’m determined bigtruck3 is gonna loose some money on this one and buy me that layby lunch I’m after [emoji38]
All I will say is, fingers crossed Wednesday morning they won’t wake up after the weekends break an realise they’ve ■■■■■■ up [emoji38][emoji38]
