RORO work, tips?

Anyone do it as a regular, any points to note with regards to dealing with multiple trailers, various brands of, good etiquette for the next man…

I’ve only ever done hands on ‘in house’ drop/swaps where there was ‘in parts’ an underlying agreed etiquette with regards to dropping heights, stowage of gear, defecting, but I’ve never hands on done anything outside of that.

Got a feeling I’d be seeing a lot of ‘ABS’ fault due to electrical compatability, and I’m sure there will be a lot of sky high drops needing a tug, invisible trailers, and watch for any scallywags on board [emoji38]
I’ve already told myself I’m using the obligatory double, triple, and quadruple checking of load security/equipment
/paperwork before setting off, but I’d be greatful to hear those who knows input…

And yes I’m well aware there be some gun slingers who’ll say get hitched an get lit lol an I’ll endeavour to do so if I get seasoned up [emoji38]

Cheers folks [emoji41]

Pulling for who and where from?

Normallny you need coupling adapters, trailer legwinding handle with a bolt, lenses and a set of double and single contact bulbs.

Check the security of load, check the trailer for damage, check the paperwork.

Never had problems with trailers being dropped too high or too low

Harwich/Felixstowe and any associated others as needed, for a large player in that type of work.
As for which company’s trailers, I’m at this point none the wiser except to know its whatevers sat there lol as I believe they don’t have their own.

You mention coupling adaptors bud, I’ll hopefully assume we’re talking for the suzies?, in which case I’d be ‘assuming’ if so they’d be supplied with the unit…

Good shout on bulbs, as for winding handle, I’ll retort an obvious here I’m sure but, for why?

As said in me into, please excuse the probably obvious, but it’s all a learning curve so if I look a ■■■ asking, I’m happy [emoji1]

Drivers…

Steal them.

The last you want is to be wandering around a trailer park at two in the morning with hooley blowing in from the north sea and not being able to wind the trailer legs up. Also keep a supply of good solid long bolts so you can attach the aforementioned handle to the winding mechanism. A good torch is also very useful.

You know I knew it was going to be that ffs[emoji38]

Torch, good shout boss [emoji106]

What about if its got the forgotten plate still swinging by the chains?
Do folk still pin em to the fence lol, or do you sling em in the trailer, or hand em in at gatehouse?

Always wondered what’s best in that situation doing this type of work…

Really?
You’ve never driven a low ride unit then eh? …I’m sure they just done it to be ■■■■ awkward. :imp:
And don’t get me started about the bent legs with the tugs coming down the ramp…especially the Purfleet tugs. :unamused:

No need for plate if it’s got one already on

I’ll add my own disclaimer now before the sensitivity police arrive.
Sir I’m sure said practice may be deemed illegal, and I could never endorse such practise.
But I’ll note it for future, cough, reference incase I find one as then I’ll know exactly what to ‘technically’ do with it depending on weather conditions…[emoji106][emoji28]

Exactly the type of advice I was after [emoji1634][emoji28]

Most EU trailers cone with palm couplings. You wont be ablebto connect a uk unit to a eu trailer in this case without the adaptors.

You might also need a roof pole if you are loading from the roof

Have you actually got a lead for a job on RoRo or are you just picking random types of haulage work to ask about on a whim?
You appear to be taking a long time to get any type of start in the job I (and others) notice.

Sounds like you have a offer of the job
At this stage if you get a offer of driving a donkey and cart take it
It’s the same principle

I’ll take ya bait Mr R [emoji23][emoji23]

BUT, Funnily enough…[emoji38]

I feel interpersonally my day has gone well, so can only hope they felt the same, only snag the 2yr rule, so that’s outta my hands.

But I hugely respected their attitudes towards life, their drivers and my wish to get a solid footing to build from.
Sooooo I’d be very VERY happy should they say yes.

As for your ‘long time’ point…

Cinders wants the shoe that fits her is all, no different to anyone else bud, and as an advocate yourself for standing to your own cause in life I’m sure you know what that means, we get one chance to find a doc amongst the nettles, and I really would like to hope today I’ve finally found it.

Been through some chaff, an been chaff meself, now it’s wheat time [emoji28]

TOP man, been looking at that very issue as I type.

Appreciated [emoji108]

Didn’t have…

Roof poles or sliding roof’s (rooves? which one is the correct spelling please) when I used to strip Scaac trailers down.

Bah! You kids dunno yer born.

mutter mutter grumble

When I used to pull the P&O trailers, the majority of their trailers had the standard UK airline couplings, but occasionally I encountered ones without them, so out came the palm couplings. There should already be a set in the truck, but if not, just ask your gaffer.

Check the tyres VERY, VERY carefully if you are picking one up from the dock. I’ve lost count on how much time I’ve wasted waiting for a fitter to come out after collecting one because of a shredded tyre! :unamused: :imp:

Shunters (especially the ones at Teesport) can occasionally drop trailers in such a way that you can’t get the unit high enough to catch the pin with the fifth wheel. If that’s so, just catch one that’s flying about and get him to use his Terberg to lower the trailer to your desired height, or otherwise, five or ten minutes of very heavy slow winding!

^^^^^ I’ve never seen a shunters touching trailer legs mate. If it’s too high it’s generally because the lunatic who dropped it raised his suspension for some bizarre reason before dropping it.

Having read benjie’s discription of how his interview went and how he feels how his possible new employers regard their employees I think he has had an interview with A2B!
