Standing at the Hockliffe depot on the A5 loaded with 20ton plus (heavy!) of “sea washed” turf off Morecambe Bay and destined for a bowling green somewhere in the South east.

More like that turf was nicked from the Isle of Man and shipped undercover to Silloth or Barrow.

Nice load though Dennis…

hiya,
Great time on t’other isle did have a cuppa in Reids but The old Woman and me had to rough it at the Dorisol Mimosa a niceish hotel at the top of a very steep hill which the local cab drivers referred to as “Cardiac Hill” I usually managed bottom to top in around four shunts, troublefree break until arrival back at Newcastle Airport when Jen decided to visit the Ladies before returning home dashes back into the terminal and falls down a flight of stairs breaking her collarbone in several places spent most of the evening in the RVI getting her sorted getting home about six hours after original touchdown and have spent most of today back at the hospital receiving treatment, could have been worse it could’ve happened when we was just going away.
thanks harry long retired.

Oh dear “H”,not so good! I hope your goodlady is soon mended and back doing what they do best, giving us lads ear ache!!! I always say that its a sign they’er back to the rudest of health!! Anyway it may just be a ploy so you will have to book another hol for recuperation purposes, where do you fancy going in a few weeks time “H”? All the best Dennis.

Difficult one this Dave as if it had been raining these loads came into the depot at Milnthorpe way overloaded and over night they dripped a lot of water off,but we also had to stop anymore landing on them and defeating the object!! So we’d put a fly sheet over the load.It looks like a decent sheet that one as well dosen’t it! Things improved a bit in '83 when we started using tri-axles as the turf was sold by the square yard and we only put the same number of pallets on the tri’s and it was 3 loads for a complete green.Isolated exceptions had to be made sometimes mate and it was a good paying job IIRC!! Cheers Dennis.

So you did run out side the law and have an unfair advantage over other hauliers :exclamation: :unamused:

ANON.

It was only when it had been ■■■■■■■ down Johnnie!!! The main of the time the loads were OK and by the time they had drained overnight they were always about legal!! Well almost, maybe just a “tad” over   Cheers Dennis PS it’s called catch weight isn’t it!!

Probably draw some flak for this shot which was at our little depot at Hockcliffe and shows the back ends of two loads of reels probably ex Reeds,Maidstone.Shot at a time when there was a shortage of new trailers and at a busy time, well I bought 5 Bodens, secondhand, that had belonged to a haulier from Oldham where they’d been built! They all had this underslung cabinet built under the backend which had been used to carry the sheets and ropes. The idea appeared to OK but they were always wet or damp and we didn’t reckon them but they ran for a while until we put them through the W’shop and removed them and returned the backends to standard,oh! and re-paint them as well.IIRC fleet no 66 had ISO locks.
