Hi Berwick,
some nice photos of your trailers only wish i could have worked for you. I have’nt done any roping & sheeting for about 8 years , heres a load i took out last night for delievery this morning to the NEC i did’nt sheet it as half the factory workforce were out messing about with it. To be fair it did’nt flap about much but had to be sheeted as half of it was cut away
cheers ade

Thanks for the compliment “lurpak” but come on,that shot you’ve put on isn’t "sheeting and roping " is it!!! It’s a made to measure cover for a motor caravan!!! Cheers B E W I C K !!

Hi Bewick,
sorry i spelt your name wrong good thing i wa’nt looking for a job asthat would’nt of made a good start. I put it on with tongue in cheek as a laugh but could make a good job of sheeting a few years ago, they donn’t like you roping and straping over the top of caravans as it tends to bend them abit
cheers
Ade

Think nowt of it Ade!!! I’ve been called a lot worse than that!! Still get some stick on TN and I’ve been retired since the late 90’s when the “old ticker” threatened to stop altogether.I understand about been unable to strap over caravans ect, don’t worry it’s only a bit of banter! Cheers Bewick.

I did’nt know about the “ticker” but i understand i had heart attack and a triple bypass my self in 2003. Vic.

Re Harrisons on Dene St. How they managed to make sheets in that cellar was always a puzzle to me, it was tiny and those bloody stairs would just about see me off, and I was young and fit in those days (handsome and modest also) When you got a new or repaired sheet from there you always had to open it up and and refold it, if you didn’t it was a right ball-ache to try and do it on top of a load. The H&S brigade would have a dickie fit if they saw what we did then. regards kevmac47

Aye Kev, I often wondered myself how they managed in such a compact area, they also made boat covers tailor made to fit, plus Beer Tents which they hired out, & ridge tents, can you remember the marble floor, bloody cold in the summer never mind the winter, Baxter was one of their best customers , being on the doorstep, they did very quick repair jobs for him , & deliver them back quickly with a sack barrow, Happy days Eh, Regards Larry.

IIRC this is a shot of T11 when it was new in early '73.The York salesman,Stuart Deane from Carlisle got it from their Aberdeen dealer Robertsons when trailers were in short supply! The funny thing about this trailer was the fact it was only 39ft long and not the 40ft normal length. It was always able to do the same job as a 40ft.All I can think of was it had been a special order, but beggars can’t be choosers can they!!!

I hope you only paid for 39’ Mr Smith

I honestly can’t re-call how much this York trailer was,£1500 rings a “Bell” but probably it wasn’t! Another odd thing about this trailer was that it only had a one foot high headboard.Thinking about it after all these years it sounds like it was ordered by a “reet tight” Scotsman!! 1 foot shorter all round !!! Cheers Bewick.

A late 1970 shot here of a 33ft York tandem which Yorks lent us while they built us 2 new trailers. The fly sheet and the fron’t main sheet were off the Ford D1000 which I’d recently sold down into Kent.I know it looks a bit of a mis-match but once we got the new trailers they both had new fly sheets and the image improved accordingly!

This is a photo of the aftermath of the Bowater Scott load that was “shot” at Newby Bridge on the A590 back in the mid 70’s.We transhipped the whole load onto another trailer that we pulled up alongside on the nearside. We never lost or damaged a single case of bog rolls, phew!

People have asked me in the past why i use ropes & sheets, i’ve always replied ,because i can . I was taught to sheet at an early age (10ish) when we worked out of tate & lyle in liverpool. Too many of todays drivers wont do it, never mind can’t do it.

nice bit of sheeting there larry , not bad for an old un . have you got any pics of the motors you were running out of ranks in the 90s ? i can remember them , but can’t get a picture in my head , i think it must be brain fade setting in . cheers , dave

Aye they are on pages 117/118, On North EastHauliers Regards Larry

Lawrence, you’re going to be in trouble for roping over that fly sheet :unamused:

Never, Have a good look at it, the sheet is wider than the normal ones, It was designed to cover a load three ft, six high, & was thicker material, so it isnt really a fly sheet, we called it a quick load & go sheet, where we only used it on its own, never leaked once. I understand what mean , dont rope over a fly sheet, for obvious reasons, but it didnt apply to us, Regards Larry

V. sorry Lawrence I thought I’d noticed you referred to as Lol! I used to have a driver(a good one I hasten to add!!) that worked for me at Bewick Transport and he was always called Lol,which I believe is short for Lawrence!! Thanks for pointing out my “gaff” as there’s nothing worse than using the wrong “handle” to address someone!! It won’t happen again. Apologies,Dennis.

Aps, accepted, Regards Larry
