roping and sheeting

rigsby:
bottles not gone , its the legs and back dennis , old age and poverty have finally caught up with me . young anon from sheffield would have to go on top or the knotted rope for him , cheers , dave

You may as well try and nail a jelly to the ceiling Dave as get that young bugger on top of a load of reels!!! Dennis.

A 113R loaded with waste paper, which wasn’t “waste” really it was baled paper for re-cycling and was clean and non dangerous product.Unfortunately because the description contained the word “waste” in it you had to have a licence to haul it which was ludicrous.A lot of the loads we carried were baled off-cuts/trims straight off newly manufactured reels we had delivered into the converting plant a day or two before! But you try getting through to the ■■■■■■■ at the enviroment offices!! not a chance they wouldn’t have none of it as the description contained the word waste!!

Dennis I think that would be a far simpler task than getting me on top of a load nowadays  if I slipped I would be buggered if I did not land on my head :unamused:
cheers Johnnie

hurry up and get them sheets rolled out johnnie , i’ve hired a cherry picker to get you down !! dave

Hi Berwick,
some nice photos of your trailers only wish i could have worked for you. I have’nt done any roping & sheeting for about 8 years , heres a load i took out last night for delievery this morning to the NEC i did’nt sheet it as half the factory workforce were out messing about with it. To be fair it did’nt flap about much but had to be sheeted as half of it was cut away
cheers ade

Another blast from the past Syd, Tommy Turnbulls motors great stuff, is he still about ? the last time I saw him, was in Moot Law Quarry, some years ago, Keep them coming, Regards Larry

Yeah, that Turnbulls photo is a corker.

Aye just like Tommy himself. Regards Larry

I remember a few years ago when my son and I did traction work for a big north east haulier, lots of flat work in those days, my son & I allways took a pride in our roping & sheeting, we had our sheets made by T.R.Harrison in Newcastle, Made to measure to suit most loads we carried… I remember being in the traffic office on afternoon when another owner driver was given a flat trailer, his reply was Oh I dont do roping & sheeting I only do Tautliners, the traffic manager said well now is your time to learn, the driver went home in the huff, oh dear I thought, how can a driver go through life & not learn to rope & sheet, I thought to myself what a bloody wimp, & sadley to say there are lots like him about today, Regards Larry

Hi Bewick,
sorry i spelt your name wrong good thing i wa’nt looking for a job asthat would’nt of made a good start. I put it on with tongue in cheek as a laugh but could make a good job of sheeting a few years ago, they donn’t like you roping and straping over the top of caravans as it tends to bend them abit
cheers

A thing of beauty a properly sheeted and fly sheeted load.

It’s nice to think that I used to be able to make a half tidy job of it, too. Not so sure that I could anymore but I still remember how. Now lets see… does the front sheet go on first or is it the back sheet. Ummm.

Like riding a bike, you never forget, rear sheet on first, we used to double dolly sheet ropes, but if the boss saw them, you were in trouble. Had to use 4 sheets when we done wooden tea chests, not easy on a old airfield, always windy. Great pictures, dont see many sheeted loads nowadays.

Think nowt of it Ade!!! I’ve been called a lot worse than that!! Still get some stick on TN and I’ve been retired since the late 90’s when the “old ticker” threatened to stop altogether.I understand about been unable to strap over caravans ect, don’t worry it’s only a bit of banter! Cheers Bewick.

Yes Harrisons always made good sheets, i remember picking some new sheets up from them when they had a place at the bottom of Dean Street on Newcastle Quayside. I had some sheets repaired a couple of months ago by Harrisons, when the Harrisons packed in they gave the business to the lad that worked for them and he kept the name on, he operates from a shed in his garden just off the spine road near Blyth.

Lawrence Dunbar:
In 1964 the firm I worked for carried loads that had to be sheeted & kept dry.A couple of sheet makers , not from the N/East sent some samples of sheet material, One was TCS,Terylene made by the ICI, The other one was Cotlin made by someone in Aberdeen, they were both lightwheight, & would have been great for the high loads that we did, but alas my gaffer said they were too expensive, & in his opinion the drivers didnt look after them, mind you some of them didnt, so the good ones like myself, missed out, never mind they were happy days. we carried on regardless, & used T.R.Harrisons sheets, very good but heavey, Regards Larry

Re Harrisons on Dene St. How they managed to make sheets in that cellar was always a puzzle to me, it was tiny and those bloody stairs would just about see me off, and I was young and fit in those days (handsome and modest also) When you got a new or repaired sheet from there you always had to open it up and and refold it, if you didn’t it was a right ball-ache to try and do it on top of a load. The H&S brigade would have a dickie fit if they saw what we did then. regards kevmac47
