Hiya,

Well stop eating all those prunes Harry and have a word with Bewick. See if he can get you a load of toilet rolls out of Bowater Scott’s in Barrow.
And have a quiet word with this lad, if you see him.

And for any old matelots on here it’s the “heads”.Only for Royal ‘Grey Funnel Line’ (RN) matelots. Never heard that used in the MN.

I always thought that the term “matelot” in general use only applied to RN sailors anyway.
In the Merchant Navy the first thing I was told was that there weren’t any sailors in the RN.
This was born out by the fact that as I had not put enough pre-ship training in I was given a rating normally reserved for ex RN sailors, DHU. Deckhand Uncertificated. Even RN Able seaman went into that category and one of my mates in my first ship, was one.
Matelot is French for ‘sailor’ and was used generally as slang in English.

I knew the word derived from the French language but in common parlance I always took it as referring to us old Grey Funnel Line pirates. I also liked the navy slang for submariners ie “bubbleheads”. Unfortunately in today’s woke world you would probably be cashiered for using most of the terms that were common 50 years ago. Try calling someone a sweaty sock (Jock) or a matelot’s mattress (Wren) nowadays and you’d be thrown in the brig.

Well done Den … seriously … killer load that one . Doubt if I could have managed that one .
How are you both keeping “H” and Eddie ? well I trust ! So I wonder what sort of mess we’d be in if todays Drivers had to return to the sheeting and roping era which we had to operate in ! Got a confession to make I didn’t sheet and rope the Atki but I did sheet and rope this MAP low loader in the yard one Saturday morning honest It was on it’s way to Germany loaded with a hush hush machine so Mike didn’t want it sailing down the Autobahn
with the sheet flapping everywhere so he gave the job to me ! Cheers Dennis.
