roping and sheeting

Didn’t know whether to add this to the Atki Thread or this one.

Good afternoon gentlemen [well it is here in downtown sunny Perth West Aus,as a former employee [I use that word tongue in cheek]of BRS but regrettably in the workshops where I weren’t allowed to associate with all use rough driver types unless of course it was to stick you on a tow bar and rescue yose from peril sitting on the side of the M1,however I digress, I do recall all roping and sheeting [tarping] the lorrys and trailers had hooks mounted under the combing rails for attaching the ropes or chains whereas here in upside down to you world we have a rope rail that is the same length as the combing,my question being have youse realised our way is better or are you still putting hooks on the flat tops.
25c here today 36 cat the weekend .

As I recall, companies like Tayforth, Caledonian and BRS were excluded from the normal requirements of R&S. :unamused:

Why would these companies be excluded from R & S ?.
As this thread is about roping & sheeting not about companies.
That is my view right or wrong stand

Which I think is wrong and said as much.
However I will ignore posts from ROF in the future if his posts are as you say all about “Taking the ■■■■”[/quote]

It’s called ‘good natured banter’. Perhaps it might be best if you extended your ‘ignoring’ because on this forum if you haven’t got a sense of humour…you’re wasting your time.

Only 25 Dig, I hope that you are well rugged up.
If you look at page 77 of this thread I think that there was a discussion and a video on the use of hooks or rails.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, gom, and all others who leaped to my defence! I do realise that there are times when my attempts at “humour” may offend those of a particularly sensitive disposition but mostly they are accepted in the spirit of general banter- something which the majority of lorry drivers are famous for.

You’ve got hold of the wrong end of the stick mate ! ROF was just having the “craic” and taking the ■■■■ as is his wont, you have to have a good sense of humour if you venture onto this thread as there is no such thing as PC on here ! Sorry Bewick.

Drivers have always had a well developed UN-PC sense of humour and there is nowt wrong with that IMHO ! I’ve been retired for many years now and my Good Lady still can’t come to terms with some of the craics and “little gems” I come out with, as she says “Once a lorry driver always a lorry driver” she tells me that folk nowadays have moved on and don’t always appreciate a “good craic” or “dry comment” from me ! Cheers Bewick.

I go out on Friday nights to my cousin’s bowling club on walney island. I don’t bowl I just enjoy the non PC company. In winter, we tend to congregate and go to various low life Barrow pubs, like ‘The Brit’. Last week someone took an old postcard type picture from the wall of a well endowed lady in a bikini bending forward. As it was passed to me, I couldn’t resist. I said ‘I only come out for the craic!’

Well, we don’t go to them on Friday nights Dennis, but there are places in Barrow where you have to hold your little finger straight forward as you sip your ‘wait wain’

Returning the thread to it’s title and to possibly stimulate some comments, so speaking personally I would always spec hooks for flat trailers as I couldn’t see the point of a tube, bloody nuisance if you ask me ! and yes I’ve watched that daft video of the demo of how it’s done using the “tube” ! Oh! and I would never use a rope hook for chaining they are not designed for that purpose. However, I realise my comments are based on what went on years ago and have nowt to do with the OTT stupidity which has engulfed the industry to-day ! I don’t know how the ■■■■ we operated safely all those years ago I really don’t ! but hey! we did and a ■■■■ sight safer than they do to-day Cheers Bewick.

Hiya,
I always chained steel, plates, billets and rail track right round the
trailer chassis taking care not to encompass cables pipes I did have
plenty of chains and tensioners and “S” hooks to make any length of
chain required like when carrying timber usually from Newport, Oh’
dear the paintwork on the trailer I hear you say.
thanks harry, long retired.

I.m surprised Mr Bewick that you never tried a couple of trailers with a “tube” you strike me as a man of innovation and willing too look at what was new/different on the market and lets face it the tube type units are usable in all load configurations when different load restraints were required or were you looking for a bite lol.
Bye the way I agree with your remark re the stupidity in the industry of today as against the common sense attitude of our generation.

Harry
the pic below shows one of the advantage of the "tube "type trailer against having to restrain a load around the chassis rails and as you so rightly pointed out scratches on the paint.
I should add the chassis rails were was slightly distorted by this incident.

Your quite correct in your observation DIG I was always ready to consider and incorporate any number of innovations to improve our operation over the years but a tube along the chock rail was never one of them and IIRC it never ever figured and, of course, we are back in the 60’s/70’s/80’s era. But it is always interesting to learn how the industry developed in other parts of the world so I would never be critical apart from commenting on whether “xyz” would help our operation ! Cheers Bewick.
