Rookie mistakes

In our yard, we have two pumps each with two hoses, 3 for HGV’s and 1 which is car size. Me and a mate both in the yard and need to fuel up, first pump is empty so move onto the other pump, being a newbie in comparison to my mate I rushed out the cab, grabbed the TAG and put it on the truck, put all the details in the keypad. Tried to do this very quickly as to not hold him up. Wasnt until I put the nozzle in the tank and pulled the lever that I realised I had picked up the car size hose!!! So there I was filling up about 400 litres of diesel with the car size hose!!!

They put a agency man on shunting once at work,he shouted to the warehouse on the radio,;trailer on bay 2 with mt,s and bd,s on it;…it was barn doors and empty

war1974:
had a fair few:

pulled away forgot to disconnect airlines x 2

Saw one poor bugger do that at Lockerbie on Friday night. He dropped his trailer to do a trailer swap, pulled away and there was that unmistakeable “hiss of shame” which is never anything else than from suzies being ripped off a unit.

luckily 1st time I managed to stop before they all went pssss, so only had to rewire the electrical on and a new olive.

2nd time I done it properly and pinged all of them.

Workin on agency for Salvesson in Evesham. Normal for them, after a run, sent out to trailer swap at Honeybourne. Only one bay, so drop empty, drag full off, put empty on bay and then back under full. These are fridges, and close coupled, so a split every time. I backed half under the full trailer and coupled up the lines. Then (wrong I know) I wound up the legs and walk round to the cab to back under. At that point the warehouse guy comes out with the paperwork and we stand around jawing for a while. I jump in and start to drive forward… Oops… Nearly. Caught it just before it dropped off the ramps.

The trailer was heavy so I had to lift it up with the air and wind the legs back down to get back under. Phew!!!

^^ Thats not your biggest rookie mistake old chap.
When I was young I asked you for an electric train set. You brought me one but didnt bring a plug to put on it. You should have known!

Many years ago on first week in (then) new job.

Picked up the loaded fridge wagon, checked everything over and merrily drove off out the depot.

Got to first drop and realised that I’d left the Anderson lead for the tail-lift in the depot…

… which was 140 miles and about 5 hours drive away!

Pretty certain that Shaun wasn’t as sheepish as I felt when I rang the boss.

Right through the years I’ve had a few, it happens your mind is elsewhere etc. But my most recent happened about 2 month ago. Done a underslung tail lift delivery in Kilmarnock, drove to Ayr for another tail lift delivery plugged in lead went to back of the truck and to my amazement the tail lift was already fully out

I’d put the panels down, unplugged it etc but forgot to put it away

No harm done I suppose could have been worse could have wiped something out with the extra tail swing length. Thing is must have had 3/4 trucks overtake me none of them made any signals or tried to get my attention

Agreed to a week at dx !

Oh [zb] me you poor soul. I did some 7.5t work for them (Nightfright).

Lol cheers I managed 3 shifts on class 2 work , last shift consisted of 8 hours on poa , 4 warehouse guys reloading my motor because 1st attempt wasn’t safe to take on the road ,verbal abuse from warehouse staff, hour & half driving & 2hrs unloading truck & tractor wheels off a trunk motor onto mine for my return leg to depot . Needless to say it was my last shift!.
You only make that mistake once

I once set off for Sutton In Ashfield near Mansfield, done it many times in the past and got a phone call off the gaffer, “Steve where you going?”, " Sutton In Ashfield, why?" I replied," Then what the ■■■■ are you doing on the M62 near Rochdale then?!!!" Me to gaffer, " Oh ■■■■ me sorry, I’ve got the ■■■■ mixed up with Ashton In Makerfield :open_mouth:   "
Felt a right ■■■■ when I got back to the yard

There’s a tip for the ‘sat navs are for n00bs’ school :stuck_out_tongue:
At least if you had set a sat nav it’d have been constantly nagging you to sort your head out and go in the right direction saving you at least ‘some’ dignity

I’d have been telling Dorris to go and get ■■■■■■ I know where I’m going every 30 seconds when she’d say in her patronising, “Make a u turn when possible” voice

Not Rookie but I reversed my car a couple of feet up the drive so that I could open the garage door. !0 mins later closed garage door, jumped in the car and just let the handbrake off to roll back down a couple of feet. Pressed on the brake pedal and thought the bloody car wasn’t going to stop! Nearly had to pull on the handbrake! Will maybe start the car engine next time I do this. Don’t know if this was numptism or not.

This is possibly the reason I never have the volume up, I just set it and let it roll on. If I decide to go another way it will redirect silently and I can carry on in peace

I’ve left fuel caps behind twice.

First time at Morrisions in the town I put the cap on the truck next to the tank and drove off with it there. I realised when I got back to the depot so drove back in my car. I asked the staff and hunted around with a torch around the forecourt, car park entrance, in the bushes, on the main road etc and couldn’t find it, so had to go to Scania to pick up a new one.

I learnt from that time to not leave put the cap on the truck as you’ll probably loose it if you forget, so I always put it on the pump now. Which I did once at the Co-op in Nairn and drove off leaving it there. Fortunately I phoned the petrol station who kept it for safe and one of my colleagues was able to pick it up as he was passing a short time later.

war1974:
taillift closed all up and realised inside controls hadn’t been switched over x lots.

Luckily ours have that switch - which I’ve never seen the point in - disabled, so either controls work all the times.
But if I’ve ever got a hired truck I will almost certainly forget to switch it over every time I close it up.

I’ve done the fuel cap thing too. Usually leave it on the tank so doesn’t get contaminated with water if raining etc and the inevitable happened once! Now I make sure I always lock the fuel cap so I have to put the key in to unlock it. This prompts me to leave the key in the cap, thus making driving off with it like that nearly impossible

Driven 40 miles with the kitbox open, I’d neatly rolled all the straps up and they were stacked three high in there but by some miracle I hadn’t lost a single strap or ratchet! Must be my driving :stuck_out_tongue:

When I had just started driving trucks, I had some work with an ‘intelligent logistics’ firm with big yellow lorries which liked to take the Michael, and one morning I was so overwhelmed with what had to be done I drove off, thankfully only making it five miles before realising I’d left all my delivery notes on the counter. My biggest achievement that day was pulling back into the yard, going in and saying bye again without attracting attention!

Had a few occasions of delivering the wrong pallet on multidrop in the early days (head in a spin!) and only realising at the next drop. Swapping them over always felt like the longest 5-10 mile drives of my life, hoping the office wouldn’t check the tracker in that 1/2 hour or so (others must relate to this?!).

I’ve literally made nearly every little mistake possible in the early days, but only once. I have yet to drive 100 miles only to open the back doors to an empty trailer. This is worrying, because I am somebody who learns from making mistakes, and I haven’t made that mistake yet!!

One of my first jobs was for miserable irish gits out of portbury docks . worked there driving battered seddon atkinson til asked to leave following fight with another driver . quickly got new job on night shift out of avonmouth .
long old night and very tired jump out of cab only to realise to my horror i was in portbury and everybody was just getting out of their cars to start work .
Mucho taking of mick and a minor scuffle followed , before i escaped to civilisation in avonmouth purple of face .

Scraggy88:
made a silly mistake yesterday after fuelling up and forgot to put the fuel cap back on and drove off and left said cap at the petrol station. Very luckily for me, about an hour later on my way back, I got back to said petrol station and my cap was sat in one piece on the opposite side of the road. Never lost no fuel and all was dandy again.

Now how many of you folks have made rookie mistakes or still make them on occasion?
I don’t care who you are or how long you been in the game but whoever says that they never make a foul up of the simplest nature are full of [zb]!

I ain’t been driving for years but I ain’t ashamed to be making simple mistakes occasionally as we are only human!

:sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Ive been at it 10 years and still make the odd mistake. At ffrst it seemed like I was sliding full tilt from one ■■■■ up to the next.

Worst iv done was dropped the trailer with the legs still up felt a right ■■■■■■■■■ stood there like an idiot trying the wind the legs down enough to get back under it, shunter got under it with a bit of a run up, nothing more was said about it so had a luck escape there. Trailer was a empty decker aswell so the bottom of the trailer hit the floor before the legs and the front end didn’t drop down that far, no damage to the unit or trailer, have defiantly learnt from that mistake.
