Don’t always get the time to read your full diary Rob, but this week managed to see all the pics and thanks for the memories of the Via Gellia from Cromford and Long Hill out of Buxton. Have travelled that route many times and recognised every bit. Hasn’t changed much over the years, I first ran it regularly on a night trunk to Kelloggs at Trafford Park and back over 35 years ago!
The Stocksbridge by-pass was a very familiar sight during my days at Toray and I knew well the all night cafe. Just a point in defence of the bloke in the middle of the layby, earlier parkers may have left and he couldn’t adjust his position without destroying an official break on his tacho.
Was this the way you were going? ‘The Cave’ a lay by cut out of the rock on the way down to Tintwhistle. This picture taken on a foggy Saturday afternoon - no cafe
Keep up the good work.

Excelent picky’s Rob
I can remember driving by that resovior on the M62 when it was empty
Gantry sign just after Hartshead Moor services was advising that the exit slip for M606 Bradford was closed. Another fine example of how accurate they are
I think they meant it was shut further up the M606 as a truck had overturned
If you had been really brave, Rob, you`d have gone to Ashbourne from Derby, and got on the A515 there after a very steep climb out of the town
Still some nice pics though

Too long-winded Trev. You try getting on the road from Derby to Ashbourne from the east side of Derby. It’s a nightmare and pretend weight-limit-o-rama everywhere. The A6 and road out of Cromford was much better in my opinion and would happily use again. Don’t forget this is coming from the one who quite happily pulls 28 tonne of steel over The Snake … .

Glad you enjoyed Dave. Never noticed that ‘cave’ lay-by - where is it exactly ?

But why advertise that the exit slip for the M606N was closed then, when it wasn’t, causing mass confusion for all the numpty drivers and a big queue on the M62 past Hartshead ?
Rob, I think the lay-by Spardo is referring to is the first one on the left after you get through the villages, and now has a snack bar in it

Glad you enjoyed Dave. Never noticed that ‘cave’ lay-by - where is it exactly ?Salut.
Rob,
It’s on the 628 Woodhead Pass. Heading towards Manchester after you go over the top and down and over the little bridge about a mile or so further there is another little bridge on a sharp left hander. The lay by is about 100 yards on the right. It is very deep and there is room for a lot of trucks there if only people would park sensibly. A crying need for ‘Manuel’ from Chez Jo at Hautvillers to organise the job properly
(That’s ‘Manuel’, the tiny figure in the hi-vis, at 6.50pm. By eight the park is full, but only because he puts everyone in their place )
Meanwhile - back at the Cave, the snack bar is at the far (western) end. After that you drop down into Tintwhistle and face the log jam

Great diarys Rob just come back of my holls and been catching up.
A59 from Skipton to Harrogate and beyond has no wait limit!!
I use the road accross Wendlesdale and Sedburgh on my bike would never do it with a truck!!
Well another week over with and once again I was close to throwing the towel in, although the week finished okay.
Monday 6 June saw an unearthly start of 0600 hours in our Morley yard as I was destined for Londis, Andover for 1100.
M1 near J28 …
Several attempts to alert the driver of this artic to the fact his trailer suspension was at full height ended up being fruitless as he carried on regardless.
This Scudger tipper caused mayhem on the M1 top side of Northampton as he sat in the middle lane for at least 15 miles overtaking absolutely nothing, causing the middle lane behind him to be stacked up for miles. Although it looks close in the picture, he must have been nearly 100 yards away from the artic. Idiot
Last doughnut before the M40 coming down the A43 from Northampton/M1
Pulled into Londis with plenty of time to spare and negotiated the shunter and all the demounts to the unloading bays round the back.
Looks a bit tight, but nothing taxing for a professional driver like me .
Booked in with goods in and instructions were to reverse on any bay and pull the curtains back so I did as I was told. Tipped and away in half an hour.
Tipping 26 pallets of Princes soft drinks.
Pulled up outside and had my hour break then belled up chaos-control to find out where I was going next. Empty up to Daventry for a load for Manchester, Liverpool and Crewe on Tuesday.
Retraced my steps back to the M40 but continued up to Banbury this time and then took the A361 up to Daventry which is not a bad road at all.
Few pics of A361 from Banbury to Daventry.
For those of you that frequent this road, about 2 miles up from the motorway there’s a short but steep hill and at the brow of the hill there’s a junction off to the right. I was merrily driving along, struggling a bit up the hill even though I was empty due to the steepness and saw a car waiting to turn right out of the junction. The wagon was easily visible to the driver. Just as I got to the brow of the hill the car pulled out right in front of me. Even slamming hard on wouldn’t have stopped me from hitting it so it was lucky there wasn’t anything coming the other way as I had to swerve harshly off to the right to avoid a collision but then I was fighting the truck to keep it out of the ditch on the other side too. While all this was happening the offending car just pootled along up my nearside and carried on without so much as a hand wave of apology, never mind a verbally apology or even stopping to see if I was alright. Of course that just put me on the war path and both the horn and lights were put to good use along with the gas pedal , all to no avail as the car took the next turning on the left without so much as any form of indication .
I pulled into a ‘lay-by’ if you could call it that, a bit further along and the car that had been following me pulled in in front of me. A guy was driving it and he got out, came over and asked if I was okay . I said yes and made my thoughts known on the offending driver’s driving style and he couldn’t agree more, saying he’d seen it all and was sure I’d hit it given how close it was. When I swerved over he couldn’t believe I’d actually missed it and congratuled my ultra-quick reactions. Nice bloke and nice of him to stop and check that I was okay too.
So the journey continued and 10 minutes later I was at my collection point in Daventry. My trailer wasn’t going to be loaded until later that evening so it was agreed I’d have my night-out in Daventry and go in in the morning to pick it up and set off so I was parked up not much after 1700.
Tuesday 7 June. My first drop wasn’t until 1000 so I didn’t start until about 0645. Went in to pick up my trailer and saw it sat very low at the front. I had a look at it and there was no way I could get the suspension that low down to even get it on the ramps. There was nothing else for it but to put the trailer leg winder in low gear and wind the legs down further to raise the front of the trailer.
This was the reason why the trailer was sitting so low at the front…
Now believe me, trying to raise a trailer with 27 tonne on by winding a handle is bloody hard and hot work (yes it was in low gear before anyone says ). Not to worry though, I’m sure the work out would have done me a world of good.
Got to my first drop which was Bestway’s just off the A62 on the top side of Manchester and waited in a long line of artic’s waiting to tip.
Mancunian Way round the bottom of Manchester.
After nearly an hour and a half waiting I was the next one to tip when an Exel rigid beer wagon decided that the queue didn’t apply to him and came steaming down the outside straight in front of me.
No mate, you won’t jump the queue in front of me and if I see the FLT go anywhere near your wagon to unload you, you’ll be hearing about it…
Amusingly, the FLT driver have him a piece of his mind too and told him to get back in the queue. Superb.
Must have been around 1330 when I got out of there. Just for future reference, if you go into the main building at the front there’s a Coke machine which sells real UK cans of Coke for 30p a time! Bargain!
Next drop was at Batley’s Cash n Carry at Whiston, which is literally on the M62/M57 junction. In and out of there in about an hour and had my break.
Last drop was at Bargain Booze in Crewe and I arrived there a few minutes before my booking time of 1700.
Bargain Booze, Crewe.
Just had 9 lifts for them here and these were whipped off quickly and I was away.
Saw a Betz truck for Ben and quickly got a pic but it hasn’t come out too well. I think the unit number is 4321 or 4221.
Betz truck for, er, Betz
Now I fancied another break before phoning chaos-control up to tell them I was empty but where the hell do you park in Crewe? I naturally headed for the Ind Ests but they’re all double yellow’s. Eventually I found a single yellow bit which said only between 0800 and 1800 so I was okay to park up as it was after 1800 now.
Belled chaos-control and instructions were to run back to Birch yard empty and come in and see them. By the time I got up there and went in it was 2015. Richard told me I was needed to cover another job as a driver had had to go home sick. Said that I’d need to be in for 0500 in the morning. My reply was of course ‘DREAM ON!!!’. After an argument with him and pointing out a few facts like it was 2015 now and I still had to go and get my tea then it would be 0530 at the earliest before I’d be moving so he put me down for 0600 on the sheet. Fair enough with me.
I pulled out my 'Spoons directory and saw that there is a 'Spoons in Heywood, so went up bob-tail to look for somewhere to park. Got to the lights at the top of Pilsworth Rd and there round the corner was an Aldi (or was it Lidl, I allus get those two mixed up?)! Excellent! Couldn’t really be any closer to the town centre! Pulled on to the car park and parked up with another wagon which was from a company I worked for on agency some time ago. I went over and asked the driver if he was going to join me and initially he said yes, so I waited… and waited. We had a bit of a chin wag like you do and before I know it it’s 2200 so there goes my last orders for food at 'Spoons. The other driver decided he wasn’t going to go after all. Well cheers. Had a bite to eat in the wagon instead and got my head down early.
Wednesday 8 June. Started at 0530, back to yard and picked up one of the nice refurb’d trailers in the livery of D S Smith Converters.
Picking up an empty in our Birch yard.
Over to Kellogg’s at Trafford Park where I promptly dropped my new found trailer back off again as the load was already loaded on another one. Bloody typical. The notes said Asda ADC, Wakefield for 0900.
Hot-footed it over the M62 and promptly came to a halt in the traffic at J23. No problem for me though. Straight off at J23 Outlane, along the side of the motorway down to Ainley Top then on to Brighouse Rd, New Hey Rd and Bradley Lane down to the White Cross Pub, under Cooper Bridge and up Leeds Rd to Gildersome. It’s touch and go whether this route is quicker or not - just depends how heavy the traffic is but today it was fairly good and I was pulling back on to the motorway at J27 about 20 minutes later, which, in my opinion would have taken longer than that sat in all the traffic on the motorway from J23 to J27.
Arrived at Asda at 0855, booked in then told to wait behind the Walkers wagon to be called in. About an hour later I was through the gate and on to bay 8 at the front. Keys in then off to the canteen to fill my belly. A superb breakfast was had for £1.71 and was by far the best RDC canteen breakfast I’ve ever had, even beating Morrisons own. Well done Asda!
It’s a pity I can’t be so enthusiastic and happy about the length of time it takes to back tip a trailer but rough with the smooth and all that …
Overview of the home of jon boy 100, aka Asda ADC, Wakefield (although the yard is actually flat ).
Once out of there (nearly 1200) chaos-control had assigned me a nice little job out of the hell hole that is aka Mamma’s & Pappa’s on the edge of Huddersfield. Turned out to be okay in the end because it was for an Argos and all their stuff is on pallets or at least tipped by them and not me .
Of course, the obligatory shunting had to be done first and no less than 7 trailers needed moving on and off the bays. I was flying through them until that familiar ‘clunk’ noise didn’t happen on one trailer.
Oops! That’s not best.
A small amount of leg winding was required and the situation was back under control within a couple of minutes. The pin is a lot shorter on this trailer than most of our others and consequently I reversed too far before starting to inflate the bags to catch it. You get a ‘feel’ for when the pin should have engaged and I knew it should have happened so instead of continuing reversing until the trailer inbeds itself in the back of the unit I stopped and got out to have a look-see.
By the time I’d done all the shunting it was nearly 1330 and I was ready for my lunch so, as I would need to take a break before getting to Acton Gate (bottom side of Stafford) I decided to stop and have it in the yard. Be advised that the Argos booked in time for Acton Gate was 1400…
At 1430 I left Mamma’s & Pappa’s and headed for Stafford. Not knowing whereabouts Acton Gate was I belled chaos-control up to ask for some directions, the story of which can be found here.
More pics of Scammonden Dam as I head westbound across the M62. Picturesque!
Deep breath required to grab as much quality air as I can before entering enemy territory
I know I’ll be up for a ribbing from a certain Tnet member with this one, but since when have 7.5 tonners been 6’6 wide or less?
At 1715 I arrived at Argos and booked in. Told to wait in my wagon until my vehicle number is displayed.
Now just for the benefit of those or you who have never been to an Argos RDC before, here are the site rules for you to peruse. There’s nothing like asking you to do things - no, you WILL do everything we say. Best bit is the third one from the bottom : Security reserve the right to stop and search both the truck and the driver. I’d like to see them try it with me .
Argos’ site rules and regulations:
Tidy F12 pulled up alongside…
So, just before 1900 my number comes up to go on bay 3. Now then, as most of us know, Argos aren’t the quickest of people when it comes to tipping trailers and I started at 0530 today, remember? Big potential for disaster here and I’m not in a mood to be part of it. Chaos-control belled up and spoke to Richard who likes to patronise people, much to my annoyance :
‘Right, got a bit of a problem here’.
‘Where?’
‘Argos at Stafford’.
‘Why what’s up now?’
‘Well, I started at 0530 this morning and my number has just come up to go on a bay’.
‘Yes, and?’.
‘Well, Argos are notorious for taking hours to tip trailers and my time is obviously up at 2030’.
‘Right well sit there until 2030 then’.
‘Yes, but then what after that if they haven’t tipped me and I’m away?’
‘Worry about that if it happens’.
‘No. That’s just a cop-out. I’ve been in these situations before where you end up running out of time and I don’t want another one. Besides which, there is no parking anywhere on site or nearby so I will have to drive to find somewhere to park up and also haven’t had anything to eat since lunch time so at the least I want to find a service station to get a couple of sarnies yeah’.
‘Right well go in and tell them all this and say you need to be tipped and away for 2000 if they start you’.
So I did that and the warehouse foreman says ‘I can’t guarantee you’ll be tipped’, then starts ranting about the fact that if I’d arrived at 1400 like I should have done then we wouldn’t be in this predicament now. Fair point. But not my fault though. I’m just the driver, not the planner.
Back on the phone to chaos-control.
‘He said they can’t guarantee it’.
‘Well you’ll have to sit there with it then’.
‘No, it either gets done with a guarantee for 2000 or it comes out and doesn’t get tipped. I know what these places are like and I’ll bet you £100 now that if they start I’ll still be on the bay well after 2000 and even 2030 and there’s no way I’m moving after my time is up. I won’t run bent for anyone when it’s my licence on the line’.
So then he starts ranting at me …
‘Why is it always you and handful or other drivers that give me grief all the time?’.
'Whoa whoa… Just hang on a minute before you start ranting and raving. Let’s just turn the clock back a few hours here and get a facts on the table. Firstly, what time did you tell me I was doing a 1400 Stafford? I’ll tell you what time : it was just before 1300. Now in case you missed it on the news, Concorde has been out of service for a couple of years now so how the do you expect me to get to Stafford for 1400 ? What you need to do in that office is get your own house in order before you start trying to put the blame on to us drivers because if you lot planned the runs properly and stopped taking on all the last-minute crap that needed to be there yesterday we wouldn’t be in this situation now would we ?
[sigh] ‘Well just go in and do the best you can’.
‘NO! You caused the problem, you sort it out with them! I’m sick of sorting out all your -ups and getting it in the neck from you clowns in the office and also the customer’.
‘Right well go in and tell them if they start you and it’s not done by 2000 then you’re sorry but your time is up and you’ll be pulling off the bay to leave, finished or not. I still can’t see why you won’t sit with it until your time is up’.
‘Well they won’t buy that will they, fool, and as far as sitting with it until my time is up, would you do it and then have to drive illegally to get parked up and also not be able to get a wash at the end of the day nor nothing to eat either?’
‘No, but that’s why I work in an office and I’m not a driver’.
'EXACTLY. SO DON’T ASK A DRIVER TO DO SOMETHING YOU WOULDN’T DO YOURSELF’.
Anyway I went and told the foreman this and of course he said no, take it away and you’ll have to get on to Sales tomorrow and get it re-booked. Phoned chaos-control back up and told them this, that I was pulling out with it and would park in Stafford for the night in case they managed to re-book it for the morning.
Parked up in 10-pin’s car park, just on the north side of the town.
Thursday 9 June. First thing to do was to bell up chaos-control to see if Mark was in yet. He was and was vaguely genned on what had happened yesterday. I put a few points across to him too, just like I did to Richard and he said he’d look into it and that was about it. He couldn’t get it re-booked so I was instructed to take it back to M&P at Huddersfield.
Had some real idiot wagon drivers to deal with on the M6, including this one …
Death-defying driving or what? Want to get a bit closer pal?
Closer still - unbelievable. We’re doing bang on 40mph at this point and the motorway is very busy.
After dropping the trailer back in Huddersfield and doing the obligatory shunting I was to run round the corner to John Cotton’s for a two drop load. Somehow in the all the time I’ve been there I’ve managed to avoid John Cotton’s work which is hated by all the other drivers because it’s hand ball and lots of it. I wasn’t looking forward to it anyway.
After a wild goose chase round every department there I finally caught up with the shunter who sorted me out trailer and load wise. One drop in Royton, Manchester and another in Barnoldswick which is on the Lancs side of the hills from Skipton off the A56.
Costly… One of John Cotton’s step frames looking sorry for itself.
A quick run over the M62 and down the A627M had me at Slumberland in Royton fairly quickly and I gave the guys a hand to pull the stuff off which was pretty damned easy to be honest and I wouldn’t have any problems doing it again.
Slumberland, Royton.
After tipping I was due a 45 minute break under the 6hr rule so when Mark phoned asking how I was getting on I told him. His reply was 'what a load of ’ with a capital B, but even after saying it was official and I would show him the proof he still wouldn’t have it. So now, back at home, I’ve had great pleasure in emailing him the official blurb with a link to the DfT site to prove it. There’s nothing better than the feeling of getting one up on your gaffer
!
After that I was off up to Barnoldswick along the M66/A56/M65/A56 and another wild goose chase was had trying to find Silent Night which was yet another case of ‘you can’t miss it’ like Argos earlier.
M66, heading North.
Eventually I found the place and with the help of the guys there, had the rolls of filling off fairly speedily.
I knew I was in Macaws territory up here and it was confirmed to me on the bell; reload out of Macaws, Nelson for Morrisons, Wakefield 0620 tomorrow morning.
Over to Nelson then and loaded with 17 pallets at the main yard, then across the road to get the remaining 9 on where I spied this very smart 164L 480 Topliner from R & C Cooper’s of Otley.
Smart Topliner…
…Completely spoilt by the tyres, the fool. How 80’s is that?
Headed back to our Leeds yard to drop the trailer off.
Nice contrast with the bright evening sun and overcast sky ahead
Just caught the front end of a wide load by Transco UK & European abnormal loads, a company I wanted to work for at one point until I found out about the money…
While I was at Macaws I got chatting with the shunter and asked if there were any ‘samples’… I was shown were the rejects bin was and armed myself with all sorts of delights and promptly filled the inside of my wagon with them . One of them was this :
Boost drink : Nice!
I had a swig of it and liked it but left it until I got home to drink the rest. 0330 Friday morning I’m laid in bed wide awake and bright as a new pin wondering why the hell I couldn’t get to sleep. It only dawned on me afterwards that it was in actual fact Red Bull in disguise and the contents of which were mainly caffeine . No flaming wonder I couldn’t get to sleep
…
Friday 10 June saw me at Morrisons for 0615 and tipped straight away. I took the opportunity to get an hour and a half on the bunk whilst waiting for my signed notes as I was shattered. Couldn’t be arsed with a breakfast this time around.
Instructions were to go to Prima Packaging in Slaithwaite (pronounced Slough-it - Slough as in the place name on the M4!) and load for Mamma’s & Pappa’s in Huddersfield. Slaithwaite is here, just on the outskirts of Huddersfield on Manchester Rd. There wasn’t any address as such, just Upper Mills. Slaithwaite isn’t a big place but there are quite a few mill type places in and about and after a fairly thorough search by yours truly I couldn’t find it. Mark had to phone up one of the drivers that does it regular to get directions and indeed it was tricky to find.
Mark advises that I must be really careful because the reason he only sends this one particular driver is that all the others he’s sent there have hit the bridge over the canal and damaged the trailer by ripping tyres off and stuff. So, following the directions off I went. Left turn at the zebra crossing over the canal and then immediately left again but I must take a really big swing to get the trailer over the bridge. Personally I couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. I managed to get over there without even thinking about it and noticed that there was a good 10-12 inches clearance between the trailer tyres and the bridge anyway. You just can’t get the drivers anymore…!
Although I didn’t know it at the time, the place on the left of the picture is Prima Packaging. No margin for error along here as I might just find myself rather wet and out of a job at the same time!
Turning round proved to be more of a challenge but being the professional driver that I am I had my positioning absolutely spot on
and jack-knifed the trailer back into a tiny car park in one go and retraced my steps to park up for loading.
Nice and steady… No margin for error here either!
A bit too close to the edge of the canal for comfort here, but I’m tight up against a wall on the offside
This is the bridge you allegedly need such a big swing to get round coming the other way. Can’t see what all the fuss is about meself.
Loaded and over to M & P to drop the trailer.
Mamma’s & Pappa’s, Huddersfield.
Called in to see Lynne at Brooklyn’s cafe on Ravensthorpe Ind Est for a roast beef dinner in a tray for £3 (well recommended) as I haven’t been down there for yonks. Used to be my favourite haunt when I was on for Featherstone’s as we ran in and out of Keeling’s across the road (now Chiquita). By the way, Brooklyn’s gets a Rob K seal of approval for food there but tell her I sent you won’t you (free food for me then, see ).
Bob-tail back to the yard where I saw a couple of the European boys, the Iveco belonging to Ianyng on here iirc - it’s a V8 model too. Asked the driver if he was Ian but he just looked blank and not a happy chappy at all so went and got my wagon jet washed instead.
Just including the XF SSC in the pic as yet another hint to Ian…
From here I picked up a loaded trailer with rice for Wing Yip in Manchester, just on Leeds Rd and delivered it.
Wing Yip Chinese food place in Manchester/
Dropped a bollock here as I’d picked up the trailer from the yard but never thought to go in and gets the delivery notes for it so had to get them to fax them through. The problem was, was that the goods in bloke didn’t speak English very well, nor understood it and trying to explain where the notes were was a task in itself.
All sorted and back up to Macaws for another load for Morrisons, this time 0900 Saturday morning. Parked up en-route and went in and tipped this morning, empty trailer back to John Cotton’s and then bob-tail back to the yard.
I’ve taken next week off work on holiday so no diary next week folks.
Hey that 520 Eurostar looks like a nice piece of kit, don’t it?

I like the A361 as it used to be my private racetrack, but Im sure I came across that bloke once while steaming down that road to Daventry.
Good read again
Top read, rob… enjoyed that one m8…
