Travelling south & north on a1 last night got to the roadworks with average speed cameras 30 & 40 mph . Now both ways got cars in front of me doing 20ish in the 30 or 30ish in the 40?
So gritting my teeth while still leaving plenty room for these crettings , as I’m a proffesional and I wasn’t permitted in lane 2.Instead I’m trying to get into there minds and trying to understand what is going on in there and what are they thinking and only conclusion I can come up with is they don’t have a care in the world? , brain dead ? Or don’t understand the signs ? And why do they only appear at roadworks?
The simple answer is; when confronted by average speed cameras it’s the first time in the journey that they’ve been forced to actually think about their driving. Normally the act of driving a car whilst in motion is way down their list of priorities which are usually somewhere along the lines of “what can I get for James and Gemimas tea tonight?”, so consequently they find concentrating on driving a tad unnerving and slow down in order to process the information.
I don’t care, plod on unstressed and live to fight another day, some things can not be changed
Its a speed limit, not a target speed
I feel your pain Victa1… Came off nightshift back onto day shift and the one thing I am struggling with is people who drive far too slowly. I came across a car doing about 35mph on the M8(w) around Livingston yesterday. I admit, I cried a little at what has became of the world.
At Newbridge going down the dip towards the speed camera, 50mph speed limit, they are doing 45-50mph yet they still jam on the anchors at the camera.
I thought of myself as a calm and not so bothered driver, and in most respects I am, I am in no hurry to do my job or do my run, our trucks are limited to 52 but some people really do make me wonder

Aye exactly my thinking but curiosity is killing me lol .
its the pr*cks on an empty motorway in the middle of the night that race to get passed you just before a roadworks then end up driving slower than the speed limit or even worse slow to about 50 when there isn’t even a speed restriction and then at the end disappear at 100 mph that annoy me !!
Most cars speedometers are read higher than the actual speed, so when it’s reading 40mph they’re probably only doing 36mph. However tachograph are calibrated so the when you’re doing 40mph in your truck the tacho will be reading very close to the actual speed.

Got a new sat nav as a gift recently, sitting at slightly over 75 on my speedometer but the satnav speed was reading 70mph

Good point , thankyou

Yep! Was driving the car last weekend with SWMBO, had cruise set to 72 (she was in a pedantic mood, don’t ask ).
“You’re breaking the speed limit” says she, “no I’m not” after going back and forth a number of times, I said get your phone out and download one of those GPS speedo things…she did and it read 68…silence for the rest of the journey

^This.
At the end of the day, it’s only for a few miles and they’ll soon be on their way and out of yours!

Sat nav speed is spot on, triangulation of 3 satellites and sometimes more, and I can vouch for that cos awhile ago my sat nav read 90 mph in a 60 exactly the same as the police radar gun that caught me
Can’t win 'em all mate.

A GPS receiver uses trilateration, not triangulation (the latter involves the measurement of angles as well as distance). In order to get an accurate position (and speed) reading, it needs to acquire at least four satellites, but will normally use more - typically 6-8.
Audi’s hae ■■■■ Speedo’s 80mph on the clock is 73 on the Nav, when I travel through road works I never surprised when the new AUDI in front is doing 45mph in a 50.
Sat nav can only show correct speed on the flat, steep hills will cause inaccurate readings.

How inaccurate is “inaccurate” though?

They are not doing anything wrong. The brain dead ones are the ones a few feet from their back bumpers.

If you carry a book of Sine Tables with you at all times, you won’t have a problem
