I’ve been aware of the RL company for the past twenty odd years and always had a lot of respect for the drivers due to the loads which they had to carry. Given the work which the drivers do, I for one would have hoped that RL treated his drivers with respect but as has been said on this topic there is no smoke without fire. So in my eyes the RL empire has gone from hero to zero in the time it’s taken me to read this topic. Shame really.
ive worked for Richard long now for several months and the guy is the most rude foul mouthed horrible person going as with his so called wife in the office! both are horrendous creatures. but the work is good and im home every weekend either on the Saturday or Friday. once you are on the road you usually left alone to get on with things the bad side is when you return to the yard. a lot of Bulgarian and polish and Romanian drivers for him now as he seems to have ruined a lot of the local good English drivers. what ever you hear about him is probably true but with the nice units and decent work across Europe and UK you can expect as an English driver to be on around £1000-£1300 every 2 weeks, don’t know what he pays the immigrants. he goes through a lot of drivers as most don’t realise the amount of work involved or don’t want to get out the cabs. I enjoy the job just a shame about the office staff and the longs themselves. not a career but defiantly a good way to save up some cash etc gain the experience then move on.
I once worked for a guy just like this a real pig and that’s being kind but he paid the money every week once out he left you to it but if you screwed up god help you , but once he had his say it was forgotten , you rarely got more than a grunt if he seen you in the yard reading through this thread i haven’t seen anyone saying anything about bad maintenance or illegal running just his attitude but then imm sure he didn’t like some of his drivers attitudes either just an observation thats all
Richard Long and Lorraine are saints compared to the one legged arse from Mendlesham, if it still wastes air that is as I refer to a good few years ago now
You make a very valid point about some of the drivers attitude …
In May of this year, Richard long added two new directors to the company, The Operations Manager and Workshop Manager respectively.
I’m new to the forum been a lurker for a while Richard longs yard is only about 8 miles from where I live so once I get the licence I will be off to get an application form
living quite close I see a lot of their trucks and and wide loads coming down country lanes and holding up all the traffic but I have to say I fancy having a go
I do know someone who worked for long on a part-time as and when basis and got on fine but never did any euro work so that’s probably why he lasted
^^^^
Go for it mate, you’ve nothing to loose.

I say well done to snapper for offering advice and instruction all in one sentence. Although I think the dark web would be a better place for his tastes…
Spoke to Mrs Long on the phone a few years ago when they were advertising for drivers, possibly the rudest most unpleasant person I have ever dealt with, I hung up on her.
Lorraine complained to me as she reckoned I reeked of smelling of stale tobacco smoke, replied by saying that’s better than smelling of stale fish … (nice job once out of the yard and on the road though)
What a soap opera
Hi all does anyone know what they are like to work for pay, conditions etc?
cheers in advance

Ok I’ll and be as fair as I can. I’ve known a lot of drivers who’ve work for Richard Longs at one time or another, most have hated it, despite good kit and probably interesting work. The main problem seems to be the attitude of Longs themselves to drivers. I’ve only met one driver who seemd to like it he’d been there for 3 years and wasn’t really bothered with coming home, he wasn’t even parked up in Europe over Christmas. Like many others he said the main problem was the attitude of Longs and the office staff to drivers.

This applies to many operators large or small.

I know what you’re saying.
but I get the impression from the many drivers I’ve known work for them that they take it to another level.
