My Dad drove a GUY Big J4 with a 180 Gardner for a firm called Alison Freighlines back in the 60s I might be interested thanks
funny finding this thread, was talking to chap over the weekend about my ERF and painting it. anyway, he reckons i should be painting back in its last owners colours or even the original owners colours when it was a tractor unit.
Now as its going to be back earning a crust I think that as it will be in my livery but the main colour should be a nod to the previous owner so does anyone know the ral code for the kahki green that Tarmac painted their wagons in■■?
Surely its all about nostalgia isnt it ?Period operators and the lorries, thats why we enjoy reading this particicular forum Lorries are working vehicles and as such were in their owners colours , sadly , i think- not many are restored and painted in period liveries & most do seem to be restored in ‘joe bloggs’ colours - & it just doesnt do it for me
.It doesnt matter who the original owner was ,just paint the thing in colours of operators who ran that type of particular vehicle
.It would , i think make alot more people happier
- I just wish i had the money ,time & space to restore one myself .Something i have noticed that does let many resto’s down is the small details ,like fitting ‘modern’ mirrors -are originals rare /difficult to source ? modern wheels & perspex no. plates , oh & trailers with sideguards
just my opinion of course…& hats off to those who put the time & effort to save these lorries .
If you have no ties to the original owner, why would you invest time and money to restore a lorry in their colours?
Below is a list of things I think are acceptable.
Getting every last detail right, original livery included.
Restoring a vehicle similar to one you used to drive and putting it in the colours of your old one. Even though the specific lorry was never on that fleet.
You wish to restore a lorry in the colours of a well known fleet, as in the Astran Scania, it was never on the fleet, the owner never worked for Astran, it’s a tribute.
You restore a lorry in your own ficticious fleet colours, say an iconic lorry like a Borderer, F88, 141 etc. You’ve never driven one, never had your own lorry, but have realised a dream.
As long as it’s period and like a time warp lorry, even to the point of it having a few bumps and scrapes and a layer of dirt over it to add authenticity.
What I don’t find acceptable.
People who think that anyone who disagrees with their opinion are wrong.
When I was at Gaydon this year I was looking at a v8 AEC that was restored in the RITB livery as it had been one of there training vehicles.
The owner had obviously spend a lot of time and money on it and it looked great. Some bloke next to me went mental as it had a British leyland badge under the windscreen. This bloke went mental to the bloke next to him over this wether this was original or not I have no idea. At the end of the day the bloke paying the bills has the choice.
Same as people saying about Pat seales Volvo it was advertised and anyone could buy it and its for sale so anyone can buy it and repaint it.
Before I left for Canada I was contemplating getting an old lorry to do the shows.
My choice was a D Series Ford 13tonner. My intention was to buy any year up to the facelift version and put an old F plate on it (68 being the year of my birth)
It would’ve been royal blue with a red chassis and faux sheeted load. Signwritten in the ficticious company name of W.K. & K.M. Lee and Son (established 1968) thus incorporating my Grandfather, my father, myself and my year of birth in the name.
Because I am a pedantic [zb]stard I would’ve sourced or had fabricated original mirrors, lights, tyres and rims etc to add authenticity to it, but it would not be authentic, as such a company never existed.
I looked around at available chassis and to get it how I wanted would’ve involved a lot of time, effort, blood, sweat, snot and tears, not to mention a considerable amount of money.
I don’t think I would react too kindly to someone going ‘mental’ if I had committed a crime such as having the wrong badge or similar, in fact, I could guarantee that the person going ‘mental’ would have a new definition of ‘mental’ by the time I had calmed down.

I totally agree, it is up to the person who owns & restored the vehicle now.
cheers

NewMercMan,i agree with both your posts pretty much totally
i have been following this thread, and the real issue seems to be certain peoples
attitudes,as in “going mental” over the slightest detail. yes,we should all be able
to accept critisism,be it constructive or not,but how the critisim is put across
seems to make all the differance.
there is a massive gap between “did you know those are not the mirrors this
would originally have?” and “It shouldn’t have that bloody Leyland badge on an AEC!”

Lovely job that mate. Who owned it originally? The reg number (Notts/Derby) is certainly authentic to a Nottingham based firm such as Stirlands.

Thanks mate ones an A series and the others a LV and they’ve both got 180s fitted I’ll keep looking I will let you know when I’ve found one cheers
They both seem quite reasonably priced and not bad to do and the parts are not the hardest to source

I don’t have much history on it I found out recently it was new to a firm called JB Transport from Ironville when I get chance I’m going to try and trace a bit more I’ve had her now for about 6 years she’s took me about 4 and half years to do I was lucky I managed to buy a brand new cab from Ernest Thorpes of Thurgoland other than that it’s been a complete chassis up restoration
Here’s one just in the process of being restored by Len Isherwood of Bacup he says he hasn’t decided on the cab livery and signwriting has yet but he is considering putting it in the same colours has the Guy Otter that he owns.

Fancy that! My firm (Joseph Merritts) used to use JB Transport as subbies - good set of lads, very well turned out, a proper ‘old school’ haulage outfit.
I’m sure if you give a call - try Sam ( a bloke) in the transport office a bell, they would be delighted to know about it, and probably be able to fill in the history a bit too.
If you click on their website history page, there are a couple of 401’s on there
