Registering with milestone tomoz

o I just started doing some Ad-Hoc work for Milestone Agency - They forced me on to NumberMill the umbrella company, told me they don’t do PAYE.

Done 2 shifts

Shift 1

11 hours 35 mins pay £10.76 for first 8 hours then £14.03 overtime so by my reckoning that should be £128.17 (Break 30 mins not paid)

Shift 2 10 hours 18 mins pay £12.75 paid for 9.8 hours due to break = £124.95

Total = £253.12

Plus the expenses I claimed - £10 both days subsistence, £6.75 mileage both days and safety kit £69.97 = £103.47

Total £253.12+£103.47= £356.59

What do I walk away with - £199.24, seems to low to me and on the payslip they have paid me 20.88 @ £6.50 an hour, 20.88 holiday pay at £0.78 an hour with £77.63 in expenses.

Non of it makes sense and it seems like a total con to me.

Someone recommend me another agency in Wiltshire/Hampshire where I don’t have to use Umbrella!!!

The mistake you’ve made there is that you think the expenses are extra, they are NOT they come out of your £253.12 to protect them from tax, then added back in. Which by my rough calcs is within £2.00

So pay is correct? Taxable pay was £150, I paid £30 (20%)

But no NI?

As long as I don’t end up with a tax bill next year!

If you had no other earnings that week it’s wrong because because there should be very little tax to pay or NI contributions. ROUGHLY you can earn about £200 pw without paying tax but anything over about £156 is charged NI. I bet they took about £30 in fees though. If you can post up your payslip having removed all your personal details it may make easier to explain.

BTW Im not an accountant just trying to help you a little, I drive a lorry for a living ok so what I say here means ■■■■■■■■. :unamused:

I have a main employment so pay tax there and will have earned over my threshold of tax free allowance.

Not sure why I wouldn’t pay NI here, maybe because ai pay it in my other job?

Everything over the NI threshold is eligible for deductions no matter where it’s earnt so be aware that you owe some NI contributions. Hope I’ve managed to help you out a little.

No one forced you to accept numbermill, you where maybe gullible enough to believe them. Also Milestone will do PAYE if you push them, trust me I’ve recently done it

They categorically told me they don’t do PAYE.

Only 1 week ago (Fri) I was sat in their local office after they rang me last Thursday discussing their need for me to return to a previous job this week, as the job was short handed.
I told them that due to recent circumstances I was unwilling to work for them again via Ltd Co, and said I would do it via PAYE. NumberMill was mentioned but I said I would only do PAYE. Which they agreed to. PAYE contract forms where filled out and signed, inc in those forms where details of holiday and pension schemes.

So yes they obviously do PAYE but are reluctant to do it, but I have a copy of the 9 page PAYE contract here

Peirre speaketh the truth. A few guys at our place are PAYE through Milestone. They will wriggle, squirm and stamp their feet to try you to go through their alter ego Numbermill but if you stick to your guns they’ll give in eventually. Trust me, they will give in as they struggle constantly to fulfill their obligations so if they know that a driver is ready, willing and able but only wants to go in via PAYE they’ll bite the bullet in the end and take you on.

All of which is a moot point imo as I predict that by autumn this year the Govt (whichever colour it is) will finally close this bogus loophole and the agencies will be forced to take everyone on on a PAYE basis. Of course the knock on effect will be that the agencies will have to vastly increase their rates to cover their new tax obligations, then the big players such as Nobbies, DHL et al will realise that employing drivers is actually the cheaper option. So maybe the agencies will return to what they were originally for which was to provide temporary short term labour to cover sickness, holidays etc.

I was chancing my luck by asking for PAYE , but several personnel Factors deemed it nessesary.

  1. My Ltd Co had just finished it’s financial year and I’d no wish to continue a new operating year under my current situation. As I’m intending to take a break from driving to become a carer for a family member. So I’m going to either shut down my ltd co or put it in hibernation while I take a break.
  2. Having exceeded the acceptable limit under IR35 via Milestone I decided it’s time to play a more safer work ethic regarding HMRC, and as the Moaster stated, I too think the status quo regarding S/E agy drivers is going to change.
  3. There are only 6 agy drivers assessed to drive that particular clients trucks, 1 has recently had a triple bypass, 1 is out of favour & 1 is in Thailand. So the Milestone where on the back foot and needed me for a few days work. Which isn’t bad since I recently found out I’m persona non grata on that site. But it’s amazing how quickly they forget issues

Hi,

If you wish to receive your pay through a limited company, we can offer our chartered accountancy services to you to ensure that your company is trading compliantly. We offer two packages and the details of what is covered by each package is detailed on our website which you can access via the link below:

However I have attached a illustration of pay for you based on the weekly gross pay you provided me today, this reflects our packages (£95+vat per month " No bookkeeping services " and £145 + vat per month with bookkeeping services) the illustration also applies the ‘VAT Flat Rate scheme we discussed. I have also attached our guide to claiming expenses trading as a limited company and the IR35 legislation we discussed this evening.

from our conversation I understand you will be setting up your limited company on company house yourself ( cost me £15 instead of £65 + vat quoted by number mill ) once you have received your certificate of incorporation providing your company registration number, please get in touch so I can assist you with setting up your new online business bank account (done myself with Cashplus online no cost to me instead of £50 + vat quoted by number mill)

This is the email above I received of Number Mill just after I inquired with Milestone Smoke lane, of the work they have at TXMaxx Avonmouth on the same day,

I got told by milestone only number mill can be used to do my accounts so I asked why ? because they are chartered accountants, ok asked my accountant of 8 years (who only charges me £60 + vat a month all in) who is not a chartered accountant what is the difference between you and them " PRICE " I then rung milestone and decline there job offer,
so the next agency I rung my first question was, I will be using my own accountant do you have a problem with that,
they said no so I join them instead,

so the moral of the story is your in charge not the agencies, you got the HGV license they desperately need.

Happy Days.

When dishing out the shifts paye are the last on the list and the 1st to be canceled if not needed. To me is not any bother but drivers needing to earn I could see it being an issue.
