hgv /lgv Driver total working daily shift should be reduced from 15 hours to 12hours
Responsible department: Department for TransportIn the interest of health and safety Hgv/Lgv Drivers are being planned a 15 hour day by many companies across the United Kingdom its time the government stepped in and changed the ruling to a maximum of 12 hours per shift, Please bear in mind that 15 hours work plus travelling to and from work, eating at home etc can add up to 17+ hours in most cases leaving very little time to rest, The 11 hours rest (by law) ends up being around 7 hours before back at work again, by the time you get to bed after leaving work, eating, showering etc.Sign this petitionNot received your confirmation email?Number of signatures:184Created by:kushbinder singhClosing:10/04/2014 08:30Share:How e-petitions workTerms and conditionsPrivacyCrown copyrightFAQs
I’ve changed my views,in the past I’d of been dead against this, but now I’m for it but I’d like a max of 8 hrs per shift when starting at silly oclock(midnight/1am), I felt so much better getting back in the house at 7/8/9 am,I’d also like this practise of having to sit in canteens at the end of shifts to make your 5/6/7 hr shift up to the 10 hrs they pay you,if you’ve done the job they’ve gave you in 6 hrs why should you have to sit there for 4 hrs just because they pay you 10 hrs, just being petty, serving no purpose, send you out for another run, fair enough, but just sit there, better off resting at home
In summing up,50 hrs guaranteed pay,8 hr max days( silly o’clock starts only),allowed to go home soon as done,I won’t hold my breath though
Another great idea from Mr Ross. The trouble is it has one very big flaw in it. The drivers hours are set under E.U. regulations from our cousins in Brussels so unless you can get all the other E.U. countries to agree, you stand as much chance as ■■■■■■■ into a gale and not getting wet, of getting the government to do anything, as their hands are tied by Brussels
This rule would merely end up “max pay being 12 hours” and “in the crapper with VOSA for more than 12 hours”.
What we THINK is that perhaps someone’s 84/60 hour week would be turned into a 60/48 hour week for the same money instead. Get real! Changes are only for the worst, unless it’s a “lessons will be learned” remark made at an inquest, in which case whatever lesson that was going to be learned gets quickly forgotten about as soon as the next week rolls in “down’t yard”.
Max hours being brought in would only work if a minimum pay scale (per shift) is brought in as well. Employers have already used the drivers to pay the increased fuel bills this past decade, and I reckon we’re all so used to the abuse by now, that even if Fuel went right back to 1990’s levels, the wages strangely would not recover back to where they were in real terms.
Balls to that idea! If all you do all day is massage the steering wheel then good luck but the longer days are necessary for some people. The hourly rate is just one reason but some of us it can take as long or longer to load and unload as it does to get destinations. I’d rather put the hours in, get the job done and have a better chance of getting home. Opt in or out by all means but its about time the working man was left to work for himself and let the half day joggers carry on jogging.
mac12:
If a person cannot earn enough in 12 hours maybe there lifestyle is wrong
Or maybe they feel they deserve somewhere near the lifestyle they had years ago on the same wage, if my wages had gone up in line with fuel, energy, food etc. my weekly wage would be £2,143 take home

Shame you weren’t around in VIctorian Britain fella. You’d have been able to work six and a half days a week then for ■■■■ wages…
Some folk value life at home! Unfortunately, because there are drivers that are happy to work silly hours, the employers expect everyone to do it.
Longish hours for drivers are are not going away certainly. But it’s wrong that you are planned max hours by some companies all the time, They are maximums not targets…at least in theory. We all know in practice what they are though don’t we?
You’ll still be on ■■■■ wages either way, you’ll just get even less of them with this idea. I enjoy my time at home too, which is why Is sooner be there than up the road. Either way, I want the choice to be mine, not to not have the choice at all. If I want less pay and less hours, I’d do that. If I wanted less hours for the same or more wonga, I’d retrain and go an entirely different way. While I agree with the unfairness if some instances like you have mentioned, I agree more with having things forced upon anyone without any regard for their circumstances or wishes.
I’m all for a 12 hour max day for a wage you can live off. But that’ll never happen !!!
It used to be the norm to pay a daily rate or trip money as it used to be on long distance work I’d done in the past. But it seems to me there’s more and more firms paying a daily rate on local/ trunking work which works out a lot less than the national min. wage, just over a fiver an hour if you’re doing a 15hr spread… p***-take if you ask me !!! There must be plenty of class 1 drivers out there who would be the lowest paid people in the country if you work out a hourly rate of pay. Nevermind though, there’s plenty of the ‘flip-flop’ brigade willing to work it !!!
In cloud cuckoo land, if this was to be brought in then you would be robbing the guys who work four on, four off or who choose to work just three or four days a week of the chance to earn decent money. If I was given the option of working 5x9hr days or 3x15hr days per week then I would be going for the latter, make no mistake.
It won’t happen, but in the unlikely event of Ross’s brainwave coming into law it should be like the WTD for night workers. You can opt out if you want to do more than the hours specified.

On the flip side to that although we are supposed to average 48 hours per week and no more, we have drivers who regulary clock up around 70 hours per week at work thereby doing another person out of a job and perpetuating the ‘ceiling pay’ a lorry driver might earn
