In cloud cuckoo land, if this was to be brought in then you would be robbing the guys who work four on, four off or who choose to work just three or four days a week of the chance to earn decent money. If I was given the option of working 5x9hr days or 3x15hr days per week then I would be going for the latter, make no mistake.
It won’t happen, but in the unlikely event of Ross’s brainwave coming into law it should be like the WTD for night workers. You can opt out if you want to do more than the hours specified.
On the flip side to that although we are supposed to average 48 hours per week and no more, we have drivers who regulary clock up around 70 hours per week at work thereby doing another person out of a job and perpetuating the ‘ceiling pay’ a lorry driver might earn
lets face it we’re dregs of working industry, you dont see office staff doing 15’s even if they did what are they going to do press a button on computer and kill someone, they get round wtd with p o a so cant the law see its being flouted, vosa so quick to punish drivers when its the companies that run us ragged im agency and have vowed to not do 15’s and if they dont like it get someone else problem is the drivers that do it fair enough if you dont have homelife to enjoy rather take the dogs out one of the great medicines i choose over work too many hours

If a person cannot earn enough in 12 hours maybe there lifestyle is wrong
some employers dont pay much for a hgv driver per hour.
Drivers on between 7 pounds to 8.50 no time and a half.
time and a quarter if your lucky.
long hours and a decent wage but it could be better for all.

5 long days is better than 6 short days. Thanks all the same.
+1
I don’t bother for less than 10 hours. Although 12 x 5 is enough for me, most of my shifts are 12 to 13 hours. 6 days one week and 5 the next although I do need 15 hours tonight to night out. An extra trip to pick up another trailer. No chance if I only had 12 hours
This industry is so diverse that the rules are never going to be satisfactory for everybody. If you’re someone who’s away all week or longer there is no getting around the fact that X amount of distance takes X amount of time and shortening your driving or working time will result in being away from home and loved ones for longer than is currently necessary. On the same token, I genuinenly do think that 9 hour reduced rest periods for those not actually sleeping in the truck are reckless and should not be forced on any one. I’m all for cracking on, doing maximum hours, being away for a week or two or three but a good nights sleep is paramount to road safety.
In Canada I can legally drive 13 hours per day and if certain critera are met, do a 16hr spread over, followed by 8 hours off. Now I can drive for 13 hours, though I wouldn’t want to do it every day, I can easily do 16hr spreads, but theres no way on this earth that I’m only having 8 hours off, even in the truck, once I’m alseep, thats it, I’m out and after eating and showering etc it’d only leave 6 hours for sleep. No chance.

hgv /lgv Driver total working daily shift should be reduced from 15 hours to 12hours
Responsible department: Department for TransportIn the interest of health and safety Hgv/Lgv Drivers are being planned a 15 hour day by many companies across the United Kingdom its time the government stepped in and changed the ruling to a maximum of 12 hours per shift, Please bear in mind that 15 hours work plus travelling to and from work, eating at home etc can add up to 17+ hours in most cases leaving very little time to rest, The 11 hours rest (by law) ends up being around 7 hours before back at work again, by the time you get to bed after leaving work, eating, showering etc.Sign this petitionNot received your confirmation email?Number of signatures:184Created by:kushbinder singhClosing:10/04/2014 08:30Share:How e-petitions workTerms and conditionsPrivacyCrown copyrightFAQs
Instead off giving more or tighter regulations for VOSA to beat us with, why dont you just realise that the exccesive hours of the transport industry are not going away. If you dislike the hours so much why instead off trying to change the industry, change yourself , find a more life balanced vocation. As with this topic when its been versed before, there are as many blokes who’ll do the long hours freely through choice, and for as many different reasons as there are indivisuals. Its previously discused about the difference between Trampers and shift workers, and the merits can be seen on both sides, but your answer is to just think about from your veiw, and beggar everybody else

I’d also like this practise of having to sit in canteens at the end of shifts to make your 5/6/7 hr shift up to the 10 hrs they pay you,if you’ve done the job they’ve gave you in 6 hrs why should you have to sit there for 4 hrs just because they pay you 10 hrs, just being petty, serving no purpose, send you out for another run, fair enough, but just sit there, better off resting at home
In summing up,50 hrs guaranteed pay,8 hr max days( silly o’clock starts only),allowed to go home soon as done,I won’t hold my breath though
If you’ve been paid for 10 hrs, surely its not alot to ask that you are in attendance for 10 hrs what if another driver/truck needed to be recovered for whatever reason, if you’re on site you could go out in another works vehicle to assist in the operation.
A firm I worked for years ago had a night driver who was allways tearing round his work to kick off earlier than what he was paid upto, after being asked by colleagues and then managment to slow down, he just kept cracking on, so they just started lumping more work into him, until he eventualy got the message, and things returned to normal, prat

Or maybe they feel they deserve somewhere near the lifestyle they had years ago on the same wage, if my wages had gone up in line with fuel, energy, food etc. my weekly wage would be £2,143 take home
‘Work’ isn’t lifestyle. Work to live, rather than live to work.
I reckon my ideal working full time week would be 4 on 4 off, 12 hour shifts payable up to 15 hours when you get stuck on the roads for any reason.
Any scheduled overtime you’d get would be a 12 hour shift as well of course.
This pattern requires a decent hourly rate rather than some kind of bullcrap “daily” rate. Daily rates are for shifts you’ll have job and knocked in 8 hours or less. 10 hours tops on a bad day maybe, but I have no interest in being salaried for over 48 hours a week anymore. I won’t be doing over 48 hours in any week (which I still do often enough) unless I’m paid by the hour these days. It’s got less to do with an unwillingness to work long hours and more to do with not being paid for it that’s all.

Reading between the lines, you are not actually opposed to long hours just being poorly paid for the privelage if thats the case then no one could disagree.

And mine too ^^^. I don’t mind long hours but still like lots of time at home so 4 on 4 off for me would be ideal in fact i did do it for 5 years but like all good things they come to the end eventually.
Mr Ross works at our place and i can tell you he is not wired up right he’s got some very weird views on life and constantly accuses the trampers of running bent, nobody listens to him if we did we’d go round the bend he’s a ■■■■■■ full stop

Call me intuitive if you like, but I had a sneaking suspicion that that would be the case!
Funny how when someone thinks for themselves instead of going along with the masses they are accused of not being weird up right I personally age with getting rid of 15 hour days like was said a driver could end up having just 5 hours sleep and ask yourself how do you feel about that driver delivering to the shopping area where your wife and children are shopping

Our place?
where is that please.
Ive to be confidential on this site.
I occasionally visit and its interesting to see you comment.
Ive been cautious to talk about my current emoloyer.
My comments in this site concerned HGV drivers and duty time.
I am not a tramper,I work days.
I admire trampers for their resilience in what must be a tedious job.

I’m not sure now that working 13 & 15 hour shifts full slog was to much.
Maybe it was me being unreasonable.
5 days at 12 hours minimum isnt enough to fit in at some unscrupulous employers.
Its a committed job.
I’m currently working for a respectable company so I’m only going of my previous employment
