Saw in the news last night the Thai owners are stopping production largely down to the fall in steel prices due to the Chinese flooding the international market as there economy slows down.
Said around 2000 staff to be laud off but I guess it will affect many others that supply them with products and services including haulage companies in the area.
Not good for what’s left of our heavy industury.
No haulage companys will be affected as its the blast furnace not the Tata steelworks thats stopping production, everything the Redcar blast furnace makes is exported abroad via Teesport , none of the steel SSI make has ever been used in the Uk

Of course they will be. When I worked for BOC and sat on the negotiating committee a number of drivers jobs were dependant on SSI getting this project off the ground. The blast furnaces are Oxygen fed, supplied by tankers from BOC.
I thought that not just steel hauliers but there must be lots of products used in production.
Said that the power station and some furnaces will be kept in use as I believe they can be badly damaged if let cool down but I guess the amount of coke used would fall. Would this come by road or would it come in on rail?
Not an area I know or an industury I know anything about.

We are affected. We took regular loads in there and got a good backload.
Ok, i assumed the op was thinking it was the steel works themselves(Tata) that had stopped production as numerous people this week have asked me what i.m going to do if it closes, People were assuming the likes of Prestons ,Intake ,Clugstons would be affected when they/we wont as its a completely different site, i agree some haulage would be affected thats involved in the running of the blast furnace but the point i was making is that nobody delivers the finished product as its all exported, sorry for the confusion i should have made it clearer what i meant
Government rules out a loan
I’ve just applied for a driving job at an iron ore mine on Baffin Island. They have only just started production but it seems they are cutting back on what they thought they would be doing. There seems to be a lot of over-production in the steel industry at the moment.
The price of steel has dropped around the world. This can be good for manufacturers who use steel, but bad for producers. The Thai owners of Redcar have reputedly invested £billions in the site. You can be sure that this government won’t be subsidising them. No doubt Corbyn’s lot would throw a few £billions of taxpayers money their way if they were in power.
I run a load of scrap iron in a few weeks back and was shocked the price had dropped so much in the year or so since I last droped some off.
Aparently the Thai company that owns it share price has droped through tge floor and I guess there’s no incentive to keep a plant thousands of miles away.
I’m not saying we should go back to the nationalised industury of the 60s and 70s but it does question the selling off of so much of our stuff to overseas investors.

The fact is nationalisation would only have worked ‘if’ we’d have also imposed trade barriers to protect the nationalised industries.Whereas what actually happened was the government throwing loads of money at strategically important domestic industrial sectors like steel and coal and manufacturing then also opening the flood gates to imports.Often being flogged on the basis of dumping and predatory pricing with the intention of putting our own industrial capability out of the frame.Which is more or less where we are now.
As for being dependent of zb quality Chinese products that just adds insult to the injury of the situation.

I think its more to do with them not buying as much, just look at Australia’s mines.

China isn’t a consumer based economy. It is a totalitarian Communist economy based on the idea of using an effectively slave labour force. To create an environment of under cutting and dumping of inferior quality products on the global market. In which the western economies are destabilised and which it sees as an advantage to the Communist agenda. The Commies obviously not being bright enough to realise the contradiction in the plan.Being dependent on the western economies remaining in a stable trade balance situation.
Whereas the fact that ‘independence’ meant us and the Australians selling out to the Communist cause after the casualties it sustained in Vietnam, instead of tying up Australia’s resources for our own benefit as a large monopoly steel producer,was/is economic suicide. For both them and the home country.

I thought it was the steel-making process that used tonnage oxygen. Blast furnaces use coke to reduce the ore don’t they?
Didn’t think it would take long for the world’s leading economist to come along and voice his extensive knowledge

If you don’t like what’s been said then why not just provide a reasoned view of your own.Instead of just wasting space moaning about others using a forum for what it’s meant for.
As for the so called economists. It’s no surprise that the global free market economy which they obviously wanted doesn’t seem to be working.

An educated guess based on past form.
Anyway what ideas have you got regards how to get the country’s industrial base up and running again and there’s obviously not much point in saying more of the same paying the Chinese for stuff we should be making for ourselves.
We need to keep the Chinese producing the cheap stuff so us artic (Everyone knows C2 multidrop is the best pay) lorry drivers have a good lifestyle on low wages.

It’s used in the furnaces to boost the heat and saves on the amount of coke required. We used to put between 4 to 8 tanker loads a day into Sheerness before that closed down.
