Hi ive been offered some work on Recovery for a local commercial garage bearing in mind i have zero experience doing this and by the very nature of the job its going to be cold wet and misrable with things liable to go wrong very quickly
what sort of p/h rate should i be expecting…? Thanks
Bit of a length of a piece of string question.
What role will you have? Driver only? Suspended tow? Will you be properly trained for that? Recovery of broken down/crashed? Would you be recovering a truck like the Fed-Ex that hit the minibus? Roadside repairs? Will you be on call/stand-by or on pre-arranged hours?
Well as you can work all hours without tacho expect in the region of £8 ph…that seems to be the going rate for jobs that aren’t on the tacho!

Most places I have been offered a job was after the interview, and the first question at or before interview is how much do you pay?
I at least want to know the pay structure before bothering with an interview.
forget the pay, your doing a service to your community, what better payment can there be, you will have a great time, every ones pleased to see you, when you explain you have to stop for your regulated break you will make sure they can get food, drink and use the toilets whilst you guard their vehicle, most will return with a coffee and a sandwich, oh I forgot the wealthier they seem the poorer you will become, if you have a choice go for the family they are usually honestly grateful.
Ok… what a waste of time total non starter
out on sunday
back on sat
£100 pounds a day no nightsout payment
off tacho ( so all the hours )
euro work involved no extra payments
state of vehicles sub par
job talked up to sound really good ( sorry been around long enought to know what B.S. smells like )
blah blah blah etc etc
very much a cowboy outfit going by what was on offer so i “politley declined”

Even off taco your working hours must meet NMW. By the sounds of it much over 12.5 and hes breaking that law as well
yeah picked him up on that no tacho for limited distance from base the answer was your “cab” is the base of operation
i wonder what Mr vosa would have to say about that when inevitably the wagon gets pulled in
who ever does decide to do that job is either nieve or desperate

Does he do a gig at a Comedy Club on Saturday nights?
Or maybe he thinks the Tacho is for long distance walkers? 100km from your cab!

i think you will agree that is a VERY unique interpritation of the rules
I think you’ve missed a great opportunity to work with one of life’s natural comedians! Your cab is your base… Well done fella!

Recovery vehicles are exempt in the UK but only when recovering the vehicle from the breakdown, not delivering a recovered vehicle from say the recovery yard to somewhere else. Not sure about the exemption outside of the UK.
I have been involved in the recovery industry in one form or another since 2011. The industry in the short time I have been involved has seen the removal of our testing exemption, rates that are constantly the subject of discussion, the demise of the C1 licence holder, smart motorways, increasing demands from the motoring organisations, amongst other “interesting” developments that have made the job challenging at best and horrendous at worst.
As an industry we enjoy a 100km Tachograph exemption when we operate within 100km “Radius” from the base where the vehicle is registered. We are based just outside Luton and can hit a fair few major conurbations whilst operating using the exemption.
However, it should be noted that this exemption applies only when moving a “disabled” vehicle. I.e Broken Down or Accident Damaged.
Any other movement, new cars, bags of potatoes etc… requires compliance with the Operator Licencing regime and Drivers Hours Regulations.
With regards to rates of pay, when you are being paid £39.00 callout at 03:00 on a sunday morning to change someones wheel and attending in a £100,000 Slide-Bed Transporter, there isn’t much leftover for the poor bloke behind the wheel doing the work.
Some heavy operators are earning very good money, but if you had a CE Licence in your hand, i’d be looking at the supermarkets/parcel carriers.
In contrast, when my boiler started leaking several weeks ago, the plumber arrived in a 15 year old transit van, with his tools in what looked like a sports bag you would go to the gym with, and charged me £120.00!!! Granted he fixed the boiler, but on the whole, I think the Recovery Industry is undervalued and provides the best service it can in a difficult environment.
I sent of a speculative aplication to a recovery firm looking for a hiab operator. He didn’t tell me the rates but the conversation ended when I told him my current rate and the enhanced rate I expect for hiab work. Seems like a very hard job for little reward. Especially if the firm does police work.
I used to work for a Recovery Firm about 20 years ago. Great Money at the time over £10.00 per hour with time and a half with over time.
On call every day from 6pm till 8.00am and got a £10.00 for saying yes to a job on the phone, then time a half.
We did cars in our area for the Police, but most of my work was on the heavy side.
Was on 40K plus per year, but worked like a dog and lost a wife thank god. Got a new one now thats very much better.
Cheer Welly
The rates paid for recovery has taken the biggest downwards spiral of all the transport industry .
When I first started doing car and van accident recovery I got a third of the invoice value for out of hours recovery for insurance companies , we averaged £4000 to £6000 each month in invioces . This was on top of my normal wages .
30 years later and you will be lucky to get more than £22k PA working for one of the national agents , thats for rotating shifts .
All that without the consideration that recovery work is one of the most dangerous jobs in transport industry , which as we all know is not the safest of industries.
