Recall retired health workers

In the light of the Covernment’s proposed policy to recall retired health wokers to combat a potential virus epidemic, should retired hgv drivers be called up to bolster an already depleted logistics industry?

What depleted logistics industry?

Oh, you mean the one that seems to have no problem filling vacancies paying the national minimum wage?

It could be a ■■■■ sight more depleted if drivers have to start “self-isolating “

We are one of the few industries that have access to all corners of the uk stuck in rancid RDC waiting rooms!!

Apart from that if most get sent home , who has the funds to cover the bills for what maybe months?

SSP payment won’t even cover basic food bills so it’s no wonder most of drivers I’ve spoke to say they can’t afford to stay off!

A lot have said they’d find something else and doubt they’d go back to driving anytime soon till all this virus is settled and vaccine available

And before the holier than though start not everyone is/was in a position to save that much up. I’m not and yes it concerns me whether anything happen what about providing for my family !

Try being sat on the driver carriage on the Eurotunnel like I am right now then tell me about the spread of diseases. I need to self isolate I reckon

Most of retired truckers I knew have burnt themselves out and/or are dead.
The first older generation with driving old Atkis, ropes and sheets and all the hard work, and the last generation with their contingent of teararses and their habitual maxing out and not having time to stop for a ■■■■…take note over 50s, and prevent it. :bulb:

Seems more of us will be expected to “work from home” too.
Anyone know how to run a DAF from a Play Station handset?

I always laugh when the likes of Mr Middle class 80 grand a year Vine on the radio come out with that one in a very matter of fact throw away way. :unamused: …they think everybody works in an office behind a computer.

I think a wholenew paradigm of working practices needs to be rolled out across the spectrum.Ideally one that has a more humane, planet friendly component at its base, maybe 6 hours a day max, allowing for a more healthy work/life balance that could address the current planet fouling norms we’ve been saddled with for centuries. It would possibly be paradoxical in creating more leisure based type jobs and allowing windows of development (learning new skills hobbies etc) that could itself be the seedcorn of newer projects which could also manfest as new business ventures perhaps.

This current gradgrind dynamic we endure has to be nipped in the bud and the federal reserve banking system which underscores it all needs to become history. This more, more, more philosophy that bridles us to a perpetual master and slave culture is a busted flush, dependent on gross planetary exploitation and needs to end.A snake swallowing it’s own tail in essence. If the KM ptb insist on guilt-tripping everyone for having the temerity to just exist, then lets try a radical experiment of living instead of this womb to tomb corporate fascist exploitation model that has surely run it’s course.

RHA has already sorted it [emoji106][emoji106]

I was thinking of using a set of swimming goggles and a scalextric remote controller.

No idea how old you are mate, but your post reads like something from the NME circa 1981.

I’ll second that.

Change the vocabulary maybe, but look around “universal basic income”?
Those of us with a traditionalist work ethic etc, may need to change gears, but those looking at AI and global resources shortages are serious about this stuff.

We will soon be surplus to requirements. That, and the inevitable fact that nature will succeed in creating another mass extinction event, means that man made climate change will soon solve itself.

I’ve re-read this post a few times, and, yes, I get what you’re saying.
Nip the Gradgrind dynamic in the bud? Unfortunately I think that ship sailed a long time ago.
Agree with what you’re saying though, but, and I’ll admit my imagination is somewhat lacking, where do you even make a start?

More of a Melody Maker fan tbh,but I get your gist.Always a dangerous thing, studying the philosophies of those luxuriantly bearded Russian revolutionary chroniclers of yore,Kropotkin in my case, some interesting ideas tbh.Marx I have no time for, just a giant shepherding of the masses to slaughter project masquerading as a solution rather than the express opposite.Kropotkins ideas I find genuinely relevant to where we are collectively today.Stuck between a rock (Khazarian fiscal fascism) and a hard place (rampant corporate neo liberalism)
The current vacuum we occupy is obviously totally unsustainable and the system tends to be predicated on system reboots…world wars essentially. We seem to have sleepwalked into a bizarre cul de sac where new ideas for living are no longer accepted, just an uneasy acquiescence to more of the same planet plundering insanities that aren’t assisting our evolution in any shape or form :unamused:

I was flicking through a newspaper in the barber’s on Saturday, and I read an article detailing some government considerations. The one that jumped out at me was, quote, “a temporary relaxation of the weekly 56 hour rule for lorry drivers so supply chains aren’t disrupted”.

Great. I relish the thought of driving for 70 hours with a duty time of 110 hours.
