I was flicking through a newspaper in the barber’s on Saturday, and I read an article detailing some government considerations. The one that jumped out at me was, quote, “a temporary relaxation of the weekly 56 hour rule for lorry drivers so supply chains aren’t disrupted”.
Great. I relish the thought of driving for 70 hours with a duty time of 110 hours.
They do that if there’s been snow disruption and the supermarket shelves need stocked, they start panicking.
(Which incidentally goes to illustrate what we could achieve as one body trying for better pay and t.s and c.s)
So normally, if you happen to drive over your hours you’re the biggest criminal since Sutcliffe, but when it suits them, it’s suddenly deemed safe and fine, and truckers are no longer the anti Christ running through their beloved towns, but are suddenly heroes.
Aye, they can shove it right up their arse for me if it does come to that,… and anybody who does it is a ■■■■ mug imo.

Yeah, sod that. I’m sticking to my 4-on.

It’s not the first time its happened…
It has and why?
We are three meals from anarchy so the powers that be are prepared to overlock misdemeanors that they would normally fine you £100’s and threaten your livelihood, all in the name of controling the population.
Have to keep that food moving so the livestock dont get all overthrowing.
Maybe refuse.
It would make more sense to do as the OP suggested & encourage retired drivers back in to the industry for a short term rather than asking current drivers to do more hours.
I’m sure there are many drivers who just need a free pass on the DCPC to enable them to be back on the road.
Obviously the Government consider it too much of a safety risk to let experienced drivers back onto the roads without a current DCPC; best to let tired drivers take the extra load on instead.

Seems more of us will be expected to “work from home” too.
Anyone know how to run a DAF from a Play Station handset?
I work in a small transport department, theres 3 of us. Last week we were pulled into the office and asked “if you had to self isolate for 14 days due to corona virus, would you be prepared to work from home?” It beggers belief
I went back into the health sector before the coronavirus became fashionable, thereby avoiding the already mentioned maxed out physical labour and burn out. I also avoid the coronavirus extinction hype. Currently the UK has confirmed five deaths out of a population of 65 million and the Chinese have an estimated 3000 deaths out of 1.5 billion. In other words, although the virus is contagious, you have more chance of winning the lottery than dying from it. In no way shape or form is it as deadly as the early 20th century influenza epidemic that killed tens of millions. With a clean class 1 licence and experience, I wouldn’t come back into driving in today’s conditions, no matter the circumstances.

It would be interesting to see if a free pass on the DCPC would have an effect on accidents.
They wont be getting these retired staff from the NHS then, my missus works with 2 people who are aged 71 and 73 respectively. She will still be working up to 68 at the very best.
To whom should I volunteer?
Or would it do more harm than good?
I am 72, reasonably fit
Did not renew my HGV(1) or DCPC last year
Hold CPC nat and int.
…and D 101, 01
but I don’t think that drivers are a reserve occupation.
I did hear that soldiers are being trained to deliver oxygen tankers. Very grateful for their contribution
but hope they are not being cooerced into a role rquiring experience.
