My advice to anyone thinking at mid 40’s is do not bother in the trucking industry ! .And here is just a few reasons why .
Firstly you see the advert earn £30 k .Bullderdash!!! That is the cream, and you have absolutely got to be that gaffers son … ,you will be lucky to get minimum wages for the hours you will have worked.Secondly the 2 years experience ,Ok this means sorry we dont want the risk of damage, and trucks in for repair ,Because that means lost money! Thanks to johnny foreigners, for buying a licence and battering bridges everywhere also !,It is not all about insurance though ,And fair play i would not want some ■■■■ smashing my £100k vehicle up !!
Thirdly ,you had the confidence and ability to pass all the tests ,medical ,theory, hazard perception.class c ,class c+e
They are actually just a worthless code on your licence if you cannot use them , and they cost an absolute fortune,It is a rip off ! ,it is not just in cash it is your time and effort ,Travelling stress etc ,all for not a lot of return ,In fact be ready for knock back city ,what you must know ,Is most big haulage firms will not touch you with a barge poll !You might get ES ,But if you go there prepare for being thrown in at the deep end ,and long long days for a pittance .
You will get rejected again and again ,Then you are forced to the leeching agencies ,who then force you to sign the official secrets act, well it might as well be! ,Because signing on an agency can take up to four hours each time you do ffs !What is that all about ?,Even then if they send you to a company ,You get yet more tests to do ,Test ,tests, tests! Be prepared for it ,Or you will be looking like a right prat .These trainers only teach you how to pass a test. They have nothing free ,every little bit they can charge you for they do!!!
Then the Agency leeches may call you if they get desperate ,As they have already been payed to sign you up !Your a nobody once you leave the office .you must pester them day in day out …
And then they start the B,S .The jobs up on there page at £12.50 ph woohoo.but sorry your £10 ph as you are new ,same job.oh and no night out allowances ,because your green and there greedy .
Think long and hard before you fund these trainers .Ask your selves the questions ,Driving a hgv is it really worth all the grief and financial outlay ? Stress and rejection your about to receive ?
You are probably better off spending half of the money , becoming a sparky or a plumber .
Less hours ,nice friendly people .Good pay for a hard days graft ,you know where you will be and how many hours you will be getting payed for ,and most of all save your life savings in the process .So think on,If your happy to take the knock backs ,your happy to let some agency piggy back off your earnings ,Your happy to do test after test after test .You have rhino skin for the abuse you will get for just trying to get into this job,Then
your a better man than me .At 47 i think im far to old for all this nonsense .
I gave it until Christmas .i am going back to Fabrication and welding .
This industry is a puzzle to me .good luck if you work it all out .I can niw see why you lads on here are always squabbling and moaning about it .In my opinion it is a thankless industry, and full of far too many rules and regulations too boot .Buy in plenty paracetamol as your going too need them !
Good luck.

I’m 25 passed August 2nd got a start on the agency with a family run business. Boss liked me took me on after a month doing 8 hours on a average shift (traffic cant be predicted) taking close to £34,800 before tax… and the cherry on the cake is, its containers! No hand ball and 16 plate trucks. I put myself about the day my licence came back signed up to 5 agencies in 1 day it killed me but you get out what you put in!
Good trainers will be up front and honest with you but brokers will not
The Govt, agencies and brokers have a vested interest in saying there is a driver shortage but a little research will show there is not because virtually all the job ADs are from agencies not direct by companies and if there was a genuine shortage those passing would be snapped up by companies the moment they passed.
This is no different to going into any other sort of career - many get thousands in loans to do university degrees but then find there are no vacancies

Albert I am not quite sure I follow all your points.
I am 34 and start training in January and am under no illusion that I will just walk into a job. No offence but to me you seem to be. Maybe you are a good driver, but you have no experience to vouch for it. You seem to be expecting the same money that guys who have been driving for years are earning. Why would anyone pay that to a new pass and the risks incurred compared to a guy with experience? I’ll take £10 an hour as a new pass, happily. I do agree about the night out money though. Take the money for the experience and then get looking. When I first started in retail the guy doing the same job as me was on 10% more. For no other reason than he had 10 years experience. Now I am the one saying to the new starters that “your time will come”.
Someone I used to work with started driving 18 months ago and will earn about £31k this year. Yes its 60 plus hours a week but no nights out (bar a couple for breakdown and delay). Thats a new pass doing that.
Regards your point about sparky/plumbing I assume you mean these courses you do to get your tickets in a couple of weeks? I looked at them and asked a friend who is a sparky he said their only any use if your going to work for yourself as people won’t take you on as no “time served experience”. They won’t pay full rates to someone who knows the theory but not “proven” they can do it. Better pay an apprentice the same for a week as you a day.
Finally to back ROG up I am a night manager in a supermarket and have interviewed endless people who went to university to get their degree, (in some very questionable subjects as well) and are anywhere from 25-35k in debt and can’t get a job so have to come fill shelves in a shop. All say they wish they hadn’t bothered.
It sounds like you have a skill to fall back on and I hope that works out for you and maybe you can fit some agency around this to try and get some hours in seeing as you have gone to the trouble of passing?
Either way the best of luck
Albert, it is pretty clear why you can’t find a job, your attitude ■■■■■. You live in Coventry, there are loads of jobs out there. Change your tone of voice, put a smile on your face and get in the car with your CV’s and you will get a job before Christmas.
Keep that sour attitude and you won’t. Simples.
Just had a look on Indeed, 1487 HGV jobs within 25 miles of Coventry. Let me guess, you spoke to 5-6 and you gave up, what about the other 1481? Go talk to them all and then you can come back and whine about not finding a job.
Man up and put some effort into it.

Have you loaded you boot with all the gear as well as a supply of CVs then gone to transport yards early in the mornings especially Mondays then talked to the TMs
I’m newly passed, and once I’m finished were I work in a few days will be doing just that
I’m sceptical of how successful that will be, wouldn’t most companies tell you to do one if you just turn up, however I will be trying this.
Is there anyone on here who had success doing this ?

IT is all about attitude, don’t expect the good paying cushy job as a newbie, you will get what others with experience don’t want, the hours will be crap, the pay will be mediocre, but there will be plenty that will give you a chance, because guys with experience won’t be willing to entertain those jobs, think food, think supermarkets, think multidrop pallet work.
Getting that first job is all about attitude, you need to stand out from all the other newbies with similar lack of experience. Showing your face is a way to set you apart, it shows you are willing, able and eager. You need to stand out from the crowd. IF a TM gets 20 CV’s and he has a willing and able applicant who made the effort to actually show up and on top of that research the firm a bit and has a good attitude and can string a sentence together, you are leaps and bounds ahead of the muppets who just fire out CV’s all over the place.
You have got yourself a license to learn, without that 2 year experience you are just a nothing, a nobody, but with the right attitude and willingness there are plenty of jobs out there and you can start that career progression.
IF you breathe and have a pulse you can find a job leading up to Christmas, everybody is desperate. Come January you need to sharpen up a bit and stick out from the crowd.
Get yourself noticed, one way of doing that is visit prospective employers, follow up with phonecalls, talk to other drivers, go spend a day in a truckstop and talk shop, go visit each and every industrial estate in your area, find the nearest big RDC and figure out which agencies they use.
Above all, keep a smile on your face, watch that attitude, and make sure you can bloody spell and use punctuation, if the OP’s post is anything to go by each and every CV he sends gets summarily filed in the circular file. His attitude here in his post is not conducive to coming across as a friendly person on the phone.

Brakes
Bidvest
Gist
I’m willing to do any work I can, for any pay, any hours, any vehicle (Van, 7.5 or class 2) I have no commercial driving experience at all yet, as my last 10 years work was in a different industry.

Go see them, dress smart casual, get a phone number, get an email address, get a name, leave a CV, leave a good impression.
Now follow up, send an email thanking them for their time, send another one a week later reminding them you are still here and who you are. Call them.
You will get a job, they are out there. They won’t be the career you had envisioned but you got to start somewhere and it is always easier finding a better job if you are already employed.
Getting a job as a newbie is not dependent on skill it is all about your personality and attitude, a TM at a food company is not going to look at your qualifications, he is going to judge hiring you on whether he thinks he can work with you and whether you have the right attitude. So show him you fit.
Don’t go driving a van, there is no need, plenty of artic jobs out there on food and multidrop, something most guys with 5 years under their belt just won’t do.
Brakes/Bidvest/Gist will all hire new guys, IF they fit, so will all the agencies supplying the supermarkets. Get your foot in the door somewhere then start searching for that job you really want.

His attitude here in his post is not conducive to coming across as a friendly person on the phone.
That should be shown to any new poster here. Sums everything up in one post
