Ratchet extensions

You may have seen them used to add extra leverage when do up ratchet straps .
I’m half way through making one for my own use , just wondered if you can actually buy them anywhere ? If so I could do with a pic , just for ideas not too copy you understand

Or if anyone has made their own , got a pic ?

Cheers mike

You don’t need to make anything, you thread the remaining strap through the handle and you have as much leverage as you want. Although the manufacturers make them with that size handle for a reason, so you do not bend the side plates!

I’d be careful using an apparatus to get more leverage on the ratchet lever, overdo it and you’re likely to end up with buckled and useless ratchets.

or busted teeth when they either break or break off where you have attached them and ping up into your face

hey Mike
I can let you have a picture of one a french guy was using he let me have it in the end its good, however as suggested where possable use the rest of the strap beneath the handle pull strap push back ratchet and pull strap again and keep repeating Ive only ever used this method where Ive strapped to the chassis eye hooks are to high!

You needn’t make or buy anything fancy, I’ve used one of these for years, cheap and effective, but as said before, whatever you use watch out for the possible kickback and loss of teeth.

Company called agri Linc in Bourne, lincs sell them. Ordered one yesterday…

Amazon do a ratchet strap tightener: http://www.amazon.co.uk/TITETUG-TiteTug-Ratchet-Strap-Tightener/dp/B007UOYHBC

There’s a man on the car boot sale sells the longer than standard ratchet with the up side down handle, they could suit you better?

Hope this doesn’t come over flippant, but have you thought of using dumbells and excersing the muscles used for ratcheting.

Ratchets by there design should be capable of supplying enough tension required and overtightening could lead to a break if there is a weak part. I take on board that ratchets may not be always located in the best place to apply the most leverage but looking at the amazon thing this looks a bit over the top to me.

Course back in the day my right arm was noticably larger than my left and since I found the internet for some strange reason it has remained so.

The rachets that tighten when you pull done rather than push up are very good and the handle is longer ,just use your body weight to tighten

The mistake a lot of drivers make is to have too much strap wrapped around the ratchet. If you pull it as tight as you can before you start to tension it, I always find that I can get it plenty tight enough.

This… or nip it up a bit, slack off, pull the extra bit through and re-tighten.

Cheers for the response guys . Anyway MK 1. Ratchet extension is ready to be tested tomorrow. , I’m carrying round timber as back loads at the moment and I like to get it strapped down well , I struggle to get them as tight as I would like .
Doesn’t help that most of my ratchets have the longer strap , so are higher up the trailer and I’m only short (ish)
I do like the idea of the longer handled upside down version tho

Cheers mike

If you are using something like that, you are doing it wrong, trust me. I’ve done more ratchets up than…

You need to apply the force through your legs in an upward motion and keep your arms locked in tight to your body with both palms up touching each corner.

This should be sufficient tension to keep most loads in place. Unless you’ve got competition ratchets you’ll end up damaging the ratchet (or yourself) if you apply too much force as the metal in the cheap ones is rubbish.

I may not know much but I know about ratchets.

Spanset branded ones are the best but pricey for more than entry level ones. Look on the website for many different designs.

You should be able to get them tight enough with out having to use an extension. If your doing them up mega tight because you feel your load mite fall off perhaps consider using extra straps.

+1 Never use a tool to tighten ratchet straps!!!There isn’t a tool on the market. Use extra straps as Saaamon says

Check 'em after half an hour’s driving, especially if you are carrying timber, they tend to loosen as the load settles.

Span set do a ratchet that tightens the other way so you can pull it down instead of push it up, hang your weight off it, it’s called the ergo which may be good for the vertically challenged amongst us.

It is pricey though but if you only need 3 or 5 for your load, it would be worth it, not if you need 20 though.
