R500 vs fh480/520

Was talking to someone earlier who recons he is getting 9.5 out of a 480 fh on traction.
I normally get high 8s 9 if I take it easy in my MAN generally run full weight but was down to 8.0 this week put it down to the weather. I’m always dubious when people start quoting 9.5 plus.

Sounds perfectly plausible to me, I’ve had similar figures out of a 480 when driving sensibly. A lot obviously depends on what roads you are driving on as running up the A9 or over the A66 is hellish on fuel in comparison to trundling up and down the M1.

The FH13 520 I have was doing 9’s with a flat behind it all through September back & to to Coventry & London…

MPG figures are usless for comparison without saying what weight/trailer.

Weight of trailer, average speed, and route all need to be the same on a like for like basis and in general it’s the engine that can produce the highest specific torque at the lowest rpm possible that will be the most fuel efficient.

We run 2 FH’s on our Motorsport team,
4 axles at 28-30 tonnes gross I can get about 9mpg from the 2007 FH520 and 8mpg from the 2003 460 FH12 running mainly European motorways.

The last team I worked for we had an 2007 FH440 from new again at about 28-30tonnes on 4 axles, I could get around the 10mpg mark on similar trips.

hi im a o/d just sold a r560 and had a r500 before that .the 500 had a direct drive g/box 56mph at 1400rpm running h/cubes on containers fuel tank to tank average 7.5 to 8.0mpg.the 560 same work overdrive g/box 56mph at 1100rpm average 7.8 to 8.5 mpg .while waiting for my nxt truck to be delivered scania have lent me a r500 out of there rental fleet .it pulls better than the 560, been nailed to the floor this week and its doing 8.8mpg.have spoke to scania about it and there scratcing there heads about it.a dream to drive and it might be up for grabs.

Check out the torque curve on the 730. :open_mouth:  In most situations you’d never need to take the thing past,or even up to,1,000 rpm even at 44 t.

I’m aware of this but as I normally get 6.5 I felt obliged to brag about my month of 9’s pulling a tandem axle flat, my apologies if your offended Silver Surfer…

A friend of mine work’s for a big Irish haulier and they have 1 particular R500 that NEVER does less than 9mpg. It’s a better puller too and has over 1 million on the clock, none of the other V8’s can touch it for economy

I wonder if it has the same driver all the time?

Ross.

MPG is a great topic for causing arguments.
On General haulage (multidrop) I used to get 9mpg give or take out of a 420 scania, R cab. (2002)
I had a 480 V8 topline for a couple of weeks, brand spanking new as a demo and that was turning out 8-8.5mpg on the same work (2004).

This was all 4-8 deliveries a day in a 4.3m curtainsider, average 35-38t gross weight I would think.

There are so many ways to make tiny improvements to fuel economy, close coupling, having the air kit setup properly, tire pressures, filters clean, paintwork clean and no extra stick on bits, curtainsider done up tight, no flapping straps.
If each bits makes 0.1mpg difference then thats nearly 1mpg just in those bits.
Plus the guy with the lead boots makes a huge difference.

I seem to recall that the old 380hp 11 litre scania engines used to be even better on fuel, hence why the Dutch had so many of them.

our 580’s are getting mid 8’s

yeah, but what was one of them getting when you know who was driving it? :unamused:

6 iirc but we know how he drove that  matt is o/d so wouldn’t rag the balls out of a big V bomber

Best truck I ever had for mpg and reliability, just about to send her to Africa as it’s been sitting in the yard unused for the last couple of years cause I was so reluctant to see the back of her.

Well after all that i put a deposit down on a 105 this morn, hope i dont live to regret it

Good luck is all anyone can say with a modern truck as with good luck you’ll do great, but bad luck can break the bank if your not financially very strong.

Good luck fella.

Ross.

Couldn’t pass it up it was a lowride ssc on 57000 miles ex raceteam exactly what I wanted except the badge on the front

460MC:
a lowride

That won’t do your fuel consumption much good. :open_mouth:
