Simoncelli dies from injuries suffered in Malaysian GP crash

Sunday, October 23rd 2011, 09:06 GMT

Marco Simoncelli has died from the injuries he sustained in a crash on the second lap of the Malaysian Grand Prix. He was 24.

Simoncelli was fighting for fourth with Alvaro Bautista when he lost the front of his bike and slid across the circuit, into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi, both of whom appeared to hit the Honda.

Simoncelli lay stricken on the track after the crash, his helmet having come off during the incident.

He was taken by ambulance to the circuit’s medical centre, but at 4.56 it was announced he had succumbed to his injuries.

RIP Sideshow Bob!

Just seen the crash…He was dead before he stopped moving in my opinion. Poor sod. :frowning:

RIP Marco. A real loss to motogp. Thoughts to your’e family and friends.

Al

bad time for motorsport

I am a great fan of rallying and remember loosing Richard Burns, Michael ‘Beef’ Park and Colin McRae within a few years.

That was all very sad news too, but apart from Beef Park, it wasn’t during a rally or race. Another one who lost his life similar to McRae was Steve Hislop. There are a lot of great men gone to that never ending racetrack.

Simon Wigg was a great rider too and is still mentioned in speedway and grasstrack racing.

Dan Wheldon last week, Marco 58 this, please no more, it touches so many people!

and don’t forget the great Joey Dunlop, died racing a 125cc in Estonia, swerved to save a child that ran across the track, lost control and hit a tree :frowning:

As i am a huge Motogp fan i would just like to say what a sad day it has been. A true star and surely a future world champion has been lost today in a horrific accident at the Malaysian Motogp.
My thoughts are with his family and friends and all of the motogp paddock and all the fans around the world that are mourning such a tragic loss. God only knows what Colin Edwards and one of his best mates Valentino Rossi are going through.
I just cant believe he’s gone.
R.I.P Marco, you will be so greatly missed and never forgoten! Nick.

There’s another thread about it here

Sad loss, one of the characters of Moto GP who will be missed. Can’t imagine how Rossi and Edwards are feeling, Rossi and Simoncelli were big mates but there was no way they could miss him.
Never seen a rider loose a crash helmet in a crash before.

Franco Uncini lost his helmet after being hit by Wayne Gardner, but he survived.

RIP Marco.

saw it on the telly this morning,it was horrible to see his helmet rolling along the grass & his lifeless body laid on the track :frowning: :frowning:
edwards & rossi couldn’t do anything to get out of his way, just a terrible freak accident…

R.I.P marco, the moto gp paddock won’t be the same without you…

I remember Ucini being hit on the side of the head, but didn’t realise he lost his helmet. If I remember correctly ( which I don’t often) it was at Assen. At the time I was surprised he didn’t loose his head.

i wonder if his helmet did’nt fit properly due to the amount of hair on his head . horrible thing to happen either way .

if only he had had the forsight to let go of the bike . horrible.

It was Assen 1983, and I think he was in a comar for a long time. He was world champion in 1982.

from what i’ve seen it looked like the strap had snapped, possibly from getting hit in the head & it looked like he’d sort of stuck in/on it & couldn’t let go,next thing it just veered across the track into edwards & rossi :frowning:

from what they were saying this morning it looked like the tyres re-gripped and he was trying to stand it up , normaly when you loose grip you either slide off or you get a highside and are thrown into the air and suffer a heavy landing , tragic and awful thing to see .

By the look of it Colins bike has gone right over his helmet and at one point on the video you can see Marco at one side of Colins bike and his helmet between the Yamaha and Rossi.

I doubt that the amount of hair had anything to do with it as the strap was pulled off by the looks of things, there will be a huge inquiry into this but at the end of the day it was a very unlucky freak racing incident

They did the right thing by abandoning the race as Casey had already won the championship. But as mentioned Colin Edwards will never forget that and be wondering if there was anything he could have done, clearly there wasn’t but that wont be easy for him to come to terms with.

If you read the press conference report, it mentions that Marco had suffered a cardiac arrest and had CPR as well as intubating him to drain blood off his thorax.

He succumbed to massive chest, neck and head injuries.

But I cannot forget that broken helmet rolling towards Colin as he tried to get up.
