Has anyone bothered to check if the Porsche was actually in the UK under that registration? That would be one way to see if it was innocent or ‘coincidence’
id bet on it that top gear have an insider at the DVLA who gave them that registration number
That’s a conspiracy Winseer would be proud of.
Have a look on youtube for the radio interview James May did. It answers most of the questions here.

What a load of bollox.
First, if you want a load of V8’s to drive around South America, why would you buy them in England?
Second, of course that was the exact car that Jeremy Clarkson (out of the 3 presenters) wanted
Third, nobody noticed? REALLY? What does H982 look like? Now put the mounting screw in the H… ├| or at least similar… ├|982… And FKL ? You can’t see that and not think of the Falklands, especially when heading to Argentina FFS.
Fourth, I’ve no problem at all with them pulling these stunts to wind people up, we expect that, and it’s part of the show, I just hate that they’re trying to deny it now.
It was telly guys, take a swig from the bottle, breath relax and enjoy
Top publicity, I enjoyed it for one, those that didnt enjoy it still watched it
It will sell globally and earn millions, we promote it gladly directly or indirectly, they are three guys with a huge back up team earning top bucks for having a good time, dare I say LIVING THE PETROL HEADS DREAM
Light entertainment, chill
If they did do it purposely I admire their balls to be honest

+1 Still love Top Gear
I tried to disguise the fact I actually liked it
Sometimes you just have to turn your brain down and go with it, its telly or films not proper life

If they did it would not show up on the DVLA tax check. Cars I have owned that have had a numberplate change, have not shown up on the DVLA site at all. One of them never showed up on the PNC and I was forever getting pulled over by plod.
One thing a lot of people probably didn’t notice, is that the Argentinians don’t call it the Falklands. They call it ‘Islas Malvinas’. So if it was a genuine mistake, the Argies would of been unlikely to notice. I think someone in England put 2 and 2 together and started spreading the hate.

May said that in one of the interviews days after his return, that someone had spotted them filming with that numberplate and put it on twitter, that’s how it all kicked off. Probably spread by do gooders who don’t like the program. He didn’t say who spotted it, if it was a local or an expat etc.
personally I think they knew fine about the numberplate, and probably had an insider start all the bother online for publicity, but it gained a worse reaction than anticipated hence the trouble.
