I had to laugh at an article in a mag the other day about the fit ment of all round view cameras, side underun bars, warning of cycles ect ect, this all being luaded by the quarry industry driving force for safety…easy isnt it when the owner driver has to pay for each bird brain idea…personnaly I have never known the sites be so disorganised, dirty ,unsafe I could go on but I dont want to bore the big wheelers out there who cross the continent.
A lorry broke down on the weighbridge at Cemex Wickwar yesterday: Several drivers offered to tow lorry off but h&s dictated that recovery had to be arranged and the attending fitters had to have a 1 hour induction before…towing the lorry off.
Regarding side cams, with our new ones you have to select to view the “squash cam”; I find it quicker to use the mirrors.
Also, all these add ons just increase tare weight.
I think mirrors a good idea I have used them for nigh on fourty years, bit of a bined when you have to clean them though
This new idea of underrun bars on tippers is stupid: More places to have to clean muck and bricks off, more bits to have bashed by the digger driver chatting on his phone/rolling a ■■■ whilst loading.
H&S rules is the main reason why i left Cemex at Shap, if the job can not be done by book we were told do it tonight when the managers go home.
Seat belts on while tipping; So I take my belt off to open tailgate (many places the banksman isn’t “trained”) put belt onto tip, belt off to do up tailgate, belt on to drive to get ticket signed, belt off to get out of cab, belt on to drive off site.
Many of these rules are drawn up by people justifying their non-job obtained with a useless college qualification.

Nail on head!
my mates put a new scania on hansons fitted on it is side step cameras, rear camera front facing camera, the rumour of the next thing is sensors fitted down near side for cyclists.
All this junk is over and above eu construction and use reg, I am begining to think maybe brown envelopes are flying about.

We’ve already got the side scan on our wagons, tbh they are a pain in the backside - very noisy and if anything puts you off using the left hand indicator that it’s wired into. The principle is sound but even static railings set it off…well set mirrors and a good pair of eyes is more than enough.
and who pays for all this? yes the haulier and too add insult too injury they will be wanting a rate cut aswell
Quarries and health and safety,We have been told that our reversing beepers sound too much like the quarry dumpers and will have to change them because it might confuse some people.
i not been on quarry work for a while i have been told that when you indicate left the camera comes on and shows the nearside and does the same when you turn right camera comes on and shows the offside so while you are watching the camera when are you supposed to be watching the road, surely these cameras are more of a distraction

+1
They keep getting worse. Now in Bardon the pickups the quarry staff use have to have a 6ft Flagpole and flag on when going up the quarry, as well as flashing lights ect…
They don’t look impressed when we ask when the grids going up to run them like dodgems, or we offer to change the flag to a jolly roger

To be fair, we have to start doing the same and I know its for the same reason. Two guys got squashed by a dumper down on a coal face in Scotland, I believe. Killed outright, poor buggers
We’ve had all the Jolly Roger craics and it has to be worth doing, if only just for the giggle
Its one of the latest round of rules I actually don’t have a problem with, although there are dozens and dozens of others which are completely nonsensical - presumably dreamt up by some ■■■, or collection of ■■■■, who wouldn’t know a rock if it fell on his foot

Totally agree. Having been on both sides of the fence, as it were, the lack of understanding by some of these people of how the job ACTUALLY works beggars belief! I can only assume that they are employed by someone else equally as clueless…
The obsession with sheeting really narks me: Some sites insist on sheeting muck and rubble. Now, if it’s dusty I’d sheet without question. What I have the problem with is sheeting large lumps of concrete covered in reinforcing wire that as soon as I brake or the wind flaps the sheet, it’ll rip like a stanley blade through a wet bog roll.
Oh yes, flashing beacons in quarries; If a shovel driver can’t see a two tone green Foden tipper with Smiths painted on the doors, then he should be walking a labrador around town not driving a 972 loader.
There are that many H&S and other warning signs at the entrance of most quarries, which could cause an accident because of drivers trying to read the things. Its all about the quarry owners covering their backs.
This EPIC/MPIC or whatever they’re called this week course you have to do has a lot to answer for; Dad put it well when we did the course a few months ago “I’ve driven in and out of quarries for over 35 years, yet unless I watch a video, I’m not trained to work in one”…
No wonder Dad’s packing up in 2 years when he hits 65.

yep we dont do quarry work but my dad is of the same opinion
All this health and safety is bull, as a bulk tanker driver I don`t have to have an epic card or flashing amber beacons, but if I go in to the ■■■■ place with an eight legger tipper I need both,go figure.
