This was on the back of my trailer this morning, our Health & Safety Rep/Driver had fetched it back from Leighton Buzzard to MK, over about 10 roundabouts last night.
(Note the lack of Spansets)
Since when has the wording SPAN SET be used rather than straps or ratchets straps
Looking at the castors they have wheel locks on and as long as there locked he did a fair job I would have used the internals better by splitting them to cross over the tops though
bald bloke:
What’s in them ? Are they heavy ? If there’s no weight to them they look fine to me.
looks like floor mats
Correct, or materials for making floor mats, they were heavy (probably 250 kg at least) & moving round on the wheels/not locked.
My point is- if people are willing to drive around with loads like this, with a couple of internal straps draped/doing nothing, (they weren’t even holding the trolleys, hard to show it in the picture) there’s no wonder VOSA are getting heavy on us.
We’ve got around 50 HGV drivers at our place, from 7.5 to Artics & from what I’ve seen, about 50% of them secure or make the effort to try & secure their loads, the other 50% don’t bother & from reading some of the posts on TNUK it’s about the same figure across the board.
I wouldn’t fancy following this load if those two trolleys decided ‘enough as enough’ & cut through the curtain because they weren’t held securely.

I was using Span sets as a general term (Durrrr)
Wheels were not locked & yes the internals would have held them if used correctly.
I don’t think he even looked in the back doors, just hooked up & off he went !!!
It does look though as though he has used the internals around the front and rear and then pulled them across the sides a bit to stop the sideways movement.
It seems to have worked in this case.

DURR no need for that fella …
If your gonna post, post the whole lot
Load not secure type of load because some wouldn’t know a mat from a horse the fact the casters weren’t locked makes a difference The term SPAN SET covers a multitude of equipment from ratchets to sling hoists to personal fall restraint systems and much more so its bit like saying my tent is held up by a span set DURR .
grow up , span set is or used to be a manufacture of ratchet straps that load is ■■■■ if it was a flat you would strap it , most internal straps are cert at 750 kg secure it this is why we have the driver cpc ,

fella in 30 + years of haulage it was roped or strapped it was never ever said use a span set …that’s why I said when did (drivers ) start using the term Throw a span set over it ad I think you’ll find span set is a brand name ( I could be wrong though )
I’m a great believer in taking whatever time is needed to fasten the load securely so it won’t move, and won’t attract the unwanted attention of VDSADDO’s (or whatever they’re called these days). Then, I can wander merrily along my way without having to keep looking nervously in my mirrors and hoping the load HASN’T moved . Might sound strange but it works for me
As an aside, I spotted an Ernest Thorpe motor last week with a full load of straight rebar, held on by 2, yes 2 , straps. They could have been rated at 15 ton each, but I think not…

Bloody Hell !
I didn’t think it would upset you so much, just because I used the word ‘Spanset’
I wrote Durrrr because obviously I’d said the wrong thing.

I cant understand why you posted it in the first place ,MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLEHILL ,its really no big deal .
Yep, much ado without nothing, the driver’s driven around 10 roundabouts and got the load there with no problems.
If he’d dumped the load on one of the roundabouts, then come on and whine about it, again, no big deal.
The thing is, it aint moved so whats the ■■■■■■ problem?
You sound like another sucker for this h&s culture that is infesting our industry, god forbid you visit the 80’s when we moved things around without ratchet straps and had no load losses and hi vis vests were for coppers only.

Truckbling, the ever probing DVSA is now the problem and the fact if a load drops and the driver did not restrain the load he is basically knackered , financially, legally and employability.
It is our responsibility to make sure a load is restraint enough, sign of the times mate, we know the rules we cant change them so lets move on
