I would start at the CV stage Pimp as thats the first port of call, once they are charmed with that its the personal charm that needs to impress
'Personal charm â is a bit of a hard one especially when applying for jobs afar/international. Iâve got different CVs as a have multiple qualifications, some are professionally done so all I do is update when I need to but still nothing:(
I live in Kent & yes Iâve gone & knocked on doors in person smartly dressed.
Timing is everything. If you ask an employer whom someone is leaving in a week, but they donât know about it - youâll get knocked back.
Ask after theyâve already put feelers out - and youâll be invited to apply via normal channels, meaning someone else will get it first.
Only asking during that short moment of âunknown as yet opportunityâ pays off when it comes to âknocking on doorsâ.
Speculative applications to yards that block book drivers is probably a better bet, even if it means youâll just be âone of manyâ - since we all only need a single job for ourselves after allâŠ
Iâve noticed that if the higher ranking yard manager happens to work a later shift than the HR officer (nearly always a woman working 9-5) then you can get a more positive result by turning up at a suitable part of the late managerâs shift - ie not during dispatch, or their lunch break!
Imagine being told at a 9pm interview that âseeing as youâre already dressed for work (PPM) - if you can start to cover the vacant 10pm run tonight - the job is yours!â
Flexibility & Suitability. Turning up in a suit during office hours to chat up the HR girl isnât any good imho - especially if youâre below par with wimmin like I am. A woman has never offered me a job in my life, and Iâve never got a job that involved meeting one in the application process either.
âMuffetâ is the surname of a sports-car driving son of a gaffer from âCarry On Lovingâ.
âMoffetâ is a fork truck on your arse like âPalfingerâ
âPalfingerâ doesnât paint your girlfriend with gold paint - it just allows self-tipping in fields.
âDonald Moffatâ is an actor famous for bushy eyebrows, and playing a robot in the TV series âLoganâs Runâ.
âMoffatâ is a town in Scotland.
Andrejs - I love the way you talk. Keep on posting there yâhear!
Well today I had a phone call from someone offering me work with an immediate start. Completely out of the blue, no clue who they were and Iâve not driven for half a decade which they seemingly werenât bothered about. Someone who I used to know years ago who I remembered after he had put the phone down had passed my number on to who I assume was his transport manager. Said Iâd been thinking about getting back into it but after summer as I look after my lad and Iâve got DCPC modules booked at the end of August. They said they had two night shifts available either a 3pm start/1am finish or 7pm start/7am finish they could put me on temporarily if I wanted.

It may not be any good but one may not have much choice. Twice Iâve done it Iâve ended up with knowledge of jobs not advertised, got to know application processes & one lady even sat me down & gave me insight into current operations, contracts in the pipeline etc, again stuff I think will be valuable especially if I ever got to interview stageâŠ
A woman from tesco once offered me the job of smashing her back doors in on a naughtily basis but I turned her down, she canât afford me:lol:
Today I received an email from an agency I left ( havining never got any work from them) over a year ago. The email offered several c+e jobs locally with the usual ÂŁ9.50 pH rate (ÂŁ10 for nights). I replied informing of my full employment, salary, shift, dqc, leave etc etc and thanked them.
Got a reply a few hours later begging me to give them a call as they had given me the standard rates in the earlier email and that, having over 23 vacancies to fill each day (I assume they meant c+e vacancies) I may well find they have possibilities for me both temporary and permanentâŠI might just call 'em and request a permanent job on ÂŁ20ph,day work and no nights out!

Drivers Shortate can be just in some companies-hiab,muffets,tipped.Because now drivers like just drive truck from A TO B.to many agency have one problem-now to many drivers jump from agency to agency with out serius reason.agency not easy found good flexibly drivers who understand who agency -it is not full time job.somebody must do job for short notice and and.and every years to many new passed drivers will come to this game.because money still not bad.clean, easy job(yes sometime can be bad day, same any job)
Ha. The company I work for pull B trains of grain barley fertilizer and anything else that can be bottom tipped and Iâve noticed a few that when you tell em that they actually gotta climb inside the hoppers to clean them they looked shocked. Quite a few not all but a fair few want simple easy pin to pin work no physical work involved. I drive double drop and step decks and love it to bits bit of a challenge. You can ram your tarps though lol (rope and sheet to you old buggers)
Maybe there is a shortage - blue arrow agency are knocking on doors like cheap hookers at donnington services touting for business right this minute. Never seen that before.
They didnât seem to appreciate my viewpoint on their industry either.
so here it is again driver shortage bo###cks ive been driving all my adult life and ime sick of hearing it I work for one of the so called top companyâs in the uk our wageâs are crap we get hardly any overtime getting dragged home all the time to save the company money and now the driver cpc more teaching your granny to â â â â eggâs , I understand no one espcialy youngsterâs want to drive truckâs who can blame them long hours (remember the working time directive less hourâs more time off more crap)and back to the dcpc I was told last year after September I will be able to name my price more crap It will just get extended or even better scrapped you boyâs in London might get it but not north of Watford, I wish I had listened to my mother god rest her donât be a lorry driver son she told me do I sound angry#### yes I am good luck to anybody who can get a decent wage in this job
A decent driver depends on who you are in relation to them:
To themselves: A decent driver is one whoâs financially secure, is content with their job, and is likely to stay in it until retirement. Their employer likes them back, because they are honest and reliable.
To other Drivers: A decent driver is one that doesnât grass them up when THEY screw up, and one you can approach with your questions without being laughed at, because they pull seniority/superiority upon you at all times in the workplace.
To Full time Employers: A decent driver gets on with it, doesnât complain, and is reliable. Theyâd only stump up if something dangerous or illegal were happening, so can be trustworthy and act as yardâs âSheriffâ on an unpaid basis as well.
To Zero Hours Employers: A decent driver takes any and every job offered them. Money is no object. Working maxed-out hours is what counts.
To the Public: A decent driver is the one theyâve never met. They only get to actually meet drivers in bad circumstances rather than good. When was the last time a driver got invited to a posh garden party as a result of their road maneuver saving lives? To the public - a driver is a ânegative re-enforcement occupationâ.

I totally agree with you.The job has gone to the dogs or has it. Im taking semi retire ment in August after 43 years in the job. I put my name down with a few agencies for one or two days a week max. Three rang me yesterday, two twice. Both putting thier rates UP. on each call.As they where that desperate for EXPERIENCED, clean licence holders.End of next month I will play all of them off against each other for what suits me.
