after working for a couple of years (on agency) for stobarts i moved to the seaside and now do stack shelves for a living and run a till and general shop duties. I LOVE IT knowing what time i am finishing,do a couple of deliveries here and there in the van.i do get a little nostalgic about all the years i used to drive but think about all the long shifts and traffic jams and can you just do this on your way back and i think sod that for lark.used to do 60 hours now do 16 (free dental, free prescriptions,no poll tax,no wages tax) and loads of time to watch the kids grow up.Here Pav!! He also bites the hand that feeds aswell!
aii get them hours in boys, need a plasma for christmas…lol
Fileep it is called divide and rule ,works all the time, it is a skill to pick the ones to look after.
Pavarote do you think it is ok to be paid 2006 rates when your company pays 2011 rates for fuel new trucks and maintanance and other running and standing costs. They have all gone up but it seems ok to keep you at 2006 rates.

you forgot to include the mile or job rate!!! it’s also needed as it plays a small part in your equation!!!
the haulage game is no different to any other business, a lot of drivers seem to think different rules apply.
the point of business is to make money, to make money you charge as much as you can for your product or service whilst retaining volumes that you’re happy with, that’s your turnover. now to keep as much of that turnover for profit you need to spend as little as possible on products, services and staff whilst retaining quality, reliability, service, convenience, residuals and with staff, turnover etc, that you’re happy with. the supply and demand of each of these products, services and staff dictates the rough ball park values of them. firms that undercut others are seen as scum, that’s day one of business school stuff, an it’d be in the morning at that! that’s what i did when i was selling parts on the bay, check out the competition and knock a few quid off, it’s hardly rocket science is it? supermarkets advertising campaigns revolve around them being cheaper than the next one, but it’s the worst thing in the world when a haulier does it. speaking of supermarkets, the old shelf stacking mantra!! we’re back to supply and demand, it’s not that they’re valued the same or only slightly less, but that’s what they have to pay to get the right staff, why would they pay more than than they need too?

Is stobarts pay poor compared to other general haulage firms? That is a genuine question!
No it is better then most.

I was offered a job last week working for eddie stobart, on his biggest contract pulling for tesco.
I had my driving assessment and interview at their all new driving school in widnes, was given all the shcpeel on the company etc, then I was shown the rates, let’s just say if I was ever gona work for tesco, it wouldn’t be as a driver but a shelf stacker!
£7.75 an hour with NO overtime rate. Apparently the drivers turned down an overtime rate in the interest of fairness!
My arse!Shelf stackers are on about £6.80 per hour, 36 hours is full time. You’d be lucky to do more hours than that as a shop floor worker.
Arrr, but the real question here is, is a ‘Truck Driver’ or the job itself only worth a mere 95 pence per hour more than a shelf stacker?? By that definition (shelf stacker is unskilled) an HGV Driver is barely semi-skilled. That’s how Stobart view their Drivers, plain and simple, or so it would seem.
There are no cracks to paper over here, because it’s just a gaping hole that needs filling in. Stobart’s are poor in every respect imo and for me personally I would rather stack shelves for £6.80 than work ‘on the books’ for them. LTD Co Agency different story. . . .

I know people have mentioned Tesco drivers, but lets face it they were overpaid and underworked. I worked out of Doncaster Tesco, and a shift for a Tesco driver was Bridlington and back(120 miles round trip tops), and it took them 8 hours! We are like any other industry, some got caught taking the pi$$! Lets hope we don’t go down the route of all the other industries that are now no longer here!
Fords were even better: 2 trips to Southend from Dagenham in a shift and the trailers were pre loaded, lovely jubbly for them.

Sorry to disapoint “ady” but our customers only used a reputable haulier who could operate flats as well as “easy peasy” Tautliners so that obviously precluded ESL !! Oh! and I only encountered your crowd once and I’m pleased to say we got the contract being well respected within the paper industry !!! Aparently the customer didn’t fancy seeing service levels disappear through the floor by awarding the contract to “the cheapest quote”. So no mileage there in assuming we lost any traffic to your gang, shame or what !! Bewick.

Dont forget John, Stobart drivers are brainwashed at their induction!

Here we go again
That’s the basic rate, you then have a few bonus’ and meal allowance making it up a little.
I’ve found that at the end of the week, most firms pay roughly the same take home rate.
Overtime to be paid at time and a half after 40 hours,
That should be industry standard.
But due to lack of backbone by ourselves, sadly that will never happen. We all knock the French, but they wouldn’t take it.
bull… who knocked back the overtime rates, the rest of stobbies get overtime rates.
