Poor pay again.

I dunno about that Beaver  , just that some seem unable to find their own path and need to be led by the hand.

I agree with both of you, entirely.

I’ve seen my share of stuff and had some unreasonably paid jobs (to which the boss was told to “poke it” cos I found a better one.)
I don’t earn “megabucks” but I’m HAPPY with my line of work and I earn enough for me.

You obviously don’t see my point, so I’ll just leave it there.

Asda pay their on line delivery drivers £9.50p per hour delivering shopping to their customers, I would personally do that than drive class 1 for £9 per hour any day of the week.

I’ve done supermarket home delivery and it is crap. Every single drop, the woman expects you to not only carry the shopping into the kitchen, but then also have a look at her bedroom. I’ve always been keen to keep the customer satisfied but there is a limit as to what I can do.

As said, it all depends on which area you live, and it usually determines your hour pay rate.
I live in an area that aint exactly famous for paying brilliant wages, which is why I went down the outbased at home working for firms from other areas route, and it worked for me very well for about 13 or so years after the business went ■■■■ north.

Nowadays I work for a firm which is maybe let’s say…the best of a bunch in the area.
The pay aint brilliant, and nowhere near to what I was used to, but it’s more than what some others are on around here, the kids are all grown up now, so I am ok with the money, …plus I’ve sorted myself a handy little stress free number in the firm,.and best of all I’m home for every (long) weekend with my trophy wife. :sunglasses:

I have been offered a better paying job in the time I’ve been with them, but it was back to a ‘never home’ situation, done it, got the t.shirt AND the hoodie on that score…, so I’m staying put.

arnt you on a thousand pound a week robbo

Well I should be yeh…but I aint.

I like the sound of this Asda home delivery gig the more I hear about it.

To be serious though, how many hours a week do these guys work?

While that statement could apply to some, I negotiated my own pay rise even though I have not got that long left. I like the job I have, it suits me at the moment but the firm did need a nudge in the right direction. If you are worthy of a raise I think you will get it.
But I know if I leave, the next bloke will not get offered the same rate. If he’s a safe pair of hands he will get it after a while…but he will have to ask!

You wouldn’t though would you.

Asda are crying out for home delivery drivers, yet the vast majority of vacancies are around 25 hours a week, with the most on offer being full time at 38 hours. Let’s say you are lucky enough to get a 38 hour contract & it’s £9.50 an hour… that’s £18.7k a year. Overtime wouldn’t be on tap like in transport.

I know I couldn’t live off that. If having to chose between the two, i’d swallow my pride and take the £9.50ph Class 1 job offering the industry average 55 hours, seeing my salary increased to £27k… in order to pay the bills and put food on the table.

Non of us in reality would be better off in an Aldi warehouse or driving an Asda van etc. It’s a BS argument. If you can’t land yourself one of the few ‘premium’ jobs in this industry (and there will never be enough for anybody), the only way to be better off is to learn a new trade and get the hell out of this industry altogether. Dreaming of driver strikes & people refusing to work for poor wages won’t get anybody anywhere either. Wages aren’t going up, period!

Well here is the problem that too many drivers look at and have this opinion. Are only too willing to take a low rate of pay and max out their hours in order to receive a livable wage. You end up doing two weeks work for 1 weeks wages this way. The bit I agree with you on is to retrain for another industry where you can work a normal weekly average amount of hours for a decent wage.

The good paying jobs never have been and never will be advertised.

The only way you get them is by using your noddle and finding a way in, it might be as simple as knocking on the door presenting yourself to the man and asking for a job, that’s how i got my present job, anyone could do it, other jobs you might have to find other ways in.

The thing is with the better work is not to take the ■■■■ out of it once you land it and to do your job to the best of your ability, things too many driver’s seem unable to fathom.

Agree completely. I fell into my job by accident. By accident I mean I wasn’t satisfied driving an artic for minimum wage and kept looking for a decent gig. Lucky? Maybe, but I made my own luck.

Winseer:
The process of actual capitalism and price discovery has been slowed almost to stagnation by the UK still remaining in the EU.

Imagine what effect a so-called “Cliff-edge Brexit” will have when local employers cannot get hold of immigrant drivers anymore to fill these £9ph jobs for love nor money… :bulb:

You’re suggesting an island not overly easy to emigrate to will see drivers wages increase dramatically are you?
Like Australia?

Another one who knows the score…

I am looking for factory work while I avoid low hourly pay.Thats in Warwickshire smack bang in the middle of the Country ,yet pay is horse sheet unless you want to fund agency tw@ts which I won’t…People who think doing 65 hours at £9 an hour are causing serious problems with pay rates .We should not be looking for more hours to make a living wage !It should be more per hour and better planning by managers to get stuff delivered .£9 I was earning that in 1995 .Good for you if you think 65 hours at £9 is great but seriously money will never increase while you take that crap.

you missed Mrs has better paid job than me

We can say it’s the same old excuses and all that but for it is the rate local to me. Every general haulage company in my area gives you pretty much the same take home pay whether that be highly hourly rate or tax free extras.

The only exception is aldi which would be a 60 mile round trip daily so once that taken into account it’s an ok wage but it’s not as brilliant as it looks for someone who has half that to commute.

So what would you suggest I do? Move? Or just accept that if I want to drive from a company near home that’s the rates and it’s not changing.

Can I ask where you live (ish), Rowley?

Couldn’t agree more.

Bottom of the barrel pay rates are now the absolute norm rather than the exception, no doubt about it.

Where’s that driver shortage again…?

Ah, hadn’t realised Lancs pays that bad. We are technically in Lancs but adjoining Trafford Park, I suspect if you are further out, Lancaster say, that would make a difference. Van drivers are on £9.01 here.
