Here’s a thought for those who can’t work out why they’re earning £1000 a week, and yet find themselves skint all the time…
If you rush to pay down a 1-5% interest rate debt, and then find yourself almost always in cashflow difficulties, you have to borrow off credit cards to get by each month, then I say you’ve got it the wrong way around.
If you’re short of money, DON’T pay down that cheap mortgage early. If anything, extend it IF you can do it on good terms, eg. 2% or less. That way, you’ve got more of your own wages still in your pocket throughout the month, and you’ll find yourself able to wean off credit cards outright.
On the other hand, if you have stacks of credit card debt, that does NOT mean you should “stick it all on the mortgage”. You’d be better off defaulting the plastic should you have a low income, and negative equity. If your card debt is well beyond £100k already, then you might want to consider ditching a full time job in favour of agency to engineer that low income that legally permits you to bin all unsecured debt without even getting CCJ/IVA or bankruptcy against your name. No one pays to bankrupt someone with no assets. Live frugally from now on, and the debt can all be walked away from, using the downturn as the main weapon against enslaving debt rates.
No one ever seems to talk about the fact that “being able to walk away from £100k debts” is as good as “earning £100k in income”. In fact, it’s even better, because you don’t pay taxes on it either.

That incorrect as its actually 1/6th of the gross amount (know as the VAT fraction)
The VAT on £100 net would be £20 making the gross total £120.
But the VAT on £100 gross is nearer £16.67. Always divide by 6.
So if I put £60 worth of fuel in my car, £10 of that is the VAT I claim back.
When VAT was 17.5% the VAT fraction was 17/47th’s

No thats fair comment, it is of course £20 added to every £100 you spend, you are absolutely right.
However the thieving blighters take without a by your leave too much of our hard earned and throw it away whichever way you want to look at it.
I dont think its a lorry driver "thing" that the results are skewed to show folk have less than average debt. I reckon the average age of the trucker these days has more to do with it. The average age of a lorry is driver is one where the mortgage is about paid off, and yes a wisdom gained over the years about money and the handling thereof. We were all daft with money when in our twenties. I passed my class one at 21 and thought it a brilliant idea to go and buy a Jaguar 4.2 litre. The 13 M.P.G. didnt bother me at all.
As the years passed I learned to put money aside, or at least spend it on bricks n mortar.
Nah, its all about the age of the respondents. Forget lorry drivers, if you asked the same question to any group of 50 somethings the answer would be the same.

That is a good idea. Cool cars always transcend money worries.
I’ve never been in any debt apart from my mortgage,and were just going through the motions on buying a house so i suppose ill be up to my neck in it. I have lived a fairly boring life to get enough money together to be able to do it though but you can’t have it all I suppose. All going well we may finally have the room to start a family and working my nuts off since school and being a tight arse will all be worth it i hope.

I’m in debt but the majority of the drivers in rdc waiting rooms are living off there SAS pensions and just working a few days a week.

I think debt is part of modern business/ life, yes you will have the odd few who live like mice but the majority of us have debt of differing levels, it is very difficult to move a new business forward without debt, whether that is by nature of vehicle finance or overdraft to cover rent or office supplies or revenue lag, business can be held back by the wrong attitude towards debt and the desire to pay for everything outright at time of purchase, I have gotten up to 400k in debt and never really worried over it much but just view it as a part of business, when I was 20 I was paying £3500 a month on kit, that was 25 years ago.

Mate were not all “sensitive little girls” we all like a bit of banter but when every bloody post is a wind up or an obvious attempt to stir the pot it gets a bit annoying, feel free to chip in with the occasional piece of advice or constructive post towards a thread instead of the constant shooting down a thread, winding people up and making a ■■■ off yourself and then declaring “I was only joking”, it gets a bit boring.
