Police, Acting at last

In T&D this month, I read that Leics. Police have been parking a “bait artic” to try and catch thieves. Among the load were covert devices to alert officers parked waiting in a nearby lay-by, in other words an old fashioned “Sweeney style” stake-out. I say about bloody time, they are actually getting off their arses, and addressing the problem, instead of the easy option of putting “trailer signs” up, or in worse cases nicking parking drivers, rather than policing the area to catch the thieves.
OK so nobody took the bait, but that wasn’t the fault of the Police, and if the thieving scrote fraternity get to know about it, it’s a start in the right direction, I,m always the first to knock the Police for ■■■■■■■■ methods, but on this occasion I cannot fault them.

I know this is a bit different but it’s a pity the Leicestershire police weren’t so interested in catching thieves when ‘Big Blue’ was stolen! They just weren’t interested, as was shown when they closed the case after only four days - a bit different from the police in another area who were dealing with the vintage truck theft which happened about the same time.

Big blue…is that the wagon the old bill are using to film you picking your nose?

it gives them an excuse to sit on there arses doing nothing whilst they look good say there looking for lorry thiefs

They should outfit a bait one with claymore’s. That’d teach the scum.

It’s one of the hardest crimes to solve. You will only catch the sods by pure luck, and i know a few who have caught them red handed.

Really can’t understand why everyone knocks the police on here, they do a very good job when the very limited budget is taken into account, there just arent enough officers to patrol every layby and MSA in the country,
Its the fault of the goverment for not putting enough money into the police and just a fact of the ecconomy.

If people are they botherd about load thefts why not park in MSAs where there is slightly more security, and why dont all the haulage firms club togeather and sort out proper secure parking spaces

I don’t have anything against the police but they can’t blame budget, how many range rover police cars have you seen or new bmw yes they get a deal as there cheaper fleet cars but there still 5x 10x the price of the system the yanks use which is a standard fleet fit police car on a removal body and chassis ie they have a bump they can just swap the whole car or chassis for peanuts then they might be able to pay for more wages etc. Look how much they pay out for bumps not involving another car. I even remember on traffic cops a while ago them sticking a expensive car in front of a stolen tractor unit in attempt to stop it… guess how that turned out…

That’s a joke. Msa’s are no safer than a lay by. They just improve the chances of an insurance pay out :unamused:

Seeing as, in your opinion ,that I cannot see what they are doing, can you qualify this at all, or is this again simply your opinion??

How many vehicles in the uk are body on chassis, all i can think of are the pick ups (navara, hilux, L200 etc) an i own a Navara yes its powerful and fast but i really wouldnt want to be using it as a persuite vehicle, apart from that there is the Nissan Path finder and the Defender (not 100% sure they are still on seprate chassis) and maby a couple of other 4x4s again no match for a stolen hatch back.
Also to change the body over would be the same amount of work as any car as you would still have to swap all the interior and wiring out probably take the engine out anyway to get the body work off. and i dread to think what Nissan would charge me for a new body shell, probably more then the car would cost anyway, if they will even supply it

ok not saying this a ideal car but lets say a range rover sport and disco 3-4 Same car to change the body on one of them its 10 bolts 2 multi plugs body come off it same ecu as well just coded to that car at factory.wouldn’t take car makers long to put something out for the UK market like the crown Victoria (which was a car designed for police and fleet purpose) or the dodge chargers in fact a Chrysler 300CC car is a dodge charger which is a UK spec car just with a different body there bult to easy change parts/body to fix them to keep maintance costs down

But in changing the body over all your retaining is the chassis running gear and supension, everything els is moved with the body so you probably woudlnt be saving anything as all the expensive bits are still in the body, unless your going to swap all them over to the new shell, witch would genrally be considerd uneconomic wtih the amount of labour envolved

The blame for not dealing with the problem of theft from trucks should be laid at the door of the haulage industry, not the police.

Economies of scale, you have state police, city police, county sheriffs, FBI, us govt, military users all buying police spec crown vics. Even if every police force in the uk collaborated in purchasing vehicles they still couldn’t get a custom made vehicle as cheap as the us do.

it’s out of a yearly budget that the police get and it is down to how they spend it, but i must say though, not all forces are like it.

Do you know the reason why force’s use Volvo’s as traffic cars?, it is down to the fact that they look scary when you have one behind you

Are you referring to the old green & red (former bus) Foden(?) that was allegedly stolen in Devon/Cornwall by a Shiply vehicle mover?

We never did hear what happened in the end…bit like the load of bullets enroute to Cyprus and the Irkutsk trip.

It should be law that all MSA’s have adequate CCTV and some fellow to watch it all night, they charge enough. The Gov’t were going to build more truck parks joined to the major road network but they abondoned it recently due to cost.

There just isn’t enough decent places to park in the uk, for instance from felixstowe, once you leave Orwell Crossing the next decent, obvious place to park is Cambridge services, if you’re low on hours you may no choice but to hang your arse out of a lay by.
