some of you may recall that about 18 months ago I came on to ask for advice on getting to Czech Republic for the European Ploughing Champonships - your help was great and the trip went without a hitch - well apart from a blow-out just outside Franfurt Airport, but thats another story…
Last year I didnt need your help as I qualified for the World Championships in New Zealand (last May) and we shipped the kit in a container. It all left the Uk in January, and arrived back in July.
This year I have qualified for the World match again and it is being held in Sweden next May. So, help and advice please. In your opinions, what would be your preferred route for getting to Valdena in Sweden with an artic? Immingham -Gothenburg ferry?

I cant remember where you are based, but have you considered Puttgarten to Helsingborg. Not sure where Valdena is either, but KW may offer some help as he was a regular in Sweden.
Immingham boat is fine, the crew were very friendly, a couple of us spent an hour or two on the bridge in the most ferocious storm, the Captain explaining “how stuff works”. Not sure of departure times, we were quite badly delayed as the ship was brand new and had been suffering problems.
Otherwise, the normal route is as Wheel Nut says, on the Danish ferries.
I couldn’t find Valdena (apart from one in Italy), are you sure about the spelling?
Scandinavia is outside my experience, so I’ll leave any advise to the people who know something about the area.
In the mean time, in Euro Drivers Info Point there’s a link to the Scandinavian Transport Info portal. There will probably be some useful stuff in there for you, to get you started.
Whoops, much embarrasment, destination is actually Vadstena - dont know what happened there??
I am based on Welsh Border/ Shropshire but have to pick up my co-competitor in Yorkshire so open to suggestions as to departure port. Immingham-Gothenburg seems a good option though not cheap at around £3,500, but will get 26 hours rest and meals - and unlikely to get a blowout whilst on the ferry. Was wondering whether anyone thought it might be better to go Immingham-Esbjerg and then drive up?
Will check out the Puttgarten to Helsingborg route now.

Now we have found it, if it was me I would still drive up, maybe use the Holiday route from Hull to Europoort and up through Hengelo to Puttgarten, then drive straight up from Rodby to Vadstena
Orys,
apologies, I thought I did post some photos? Dont worry will sort that.
Thanks for the replies guys. Dose the fact that I am still piloting my old (T reg) ERF alter your advice / thoughts?
Touch wood, the old girl made it to CZ and back without a hint of trouble and hope she will do Sweden as well, but one breakdown could soon swallow up any savings made by taking the road option?
HAVE you looked at the costs of both routes by ship direct to Sweden
and then the route by road sea road via Dover and Puttgarden ;
If you take the direct SEA route the short distance by road from
the Swedish dock IT is not that far,Where as the other route is
more road work and you say your self that you are not too sure about
the truck due to its age, One thought have you suggested to the
ferry company who go direct to Sweden perhaps they might like to sponsor you
as it would be a great picture and story for them ■■?
switchlogic:
There’s only one way to do Sweden, Dover Calais, none of this namby pamby overnight ferry malarky.
Except the tractor driver is coming up from Shropshire to Yorkshire to pick another tractor and driver up, so presuming he means the proper part of Yorkshire and not North Derbyshire or West Lancashire
It just seems logical for two people to travel on North Sea Ferries as they will get 2 free meals which would cost a car driver and passenger about £50, that along with getting a good nights sleep must be worth backtracking down to Dover and then up again to Holland. You would get your vignette in Hull and use as much of Holland as you can before joining the Maut
last time we went Imminghham to Esbjerg it was a tad over £2K - apparently the Immingham-Gothenburg ferry is around £3.5K. Did get a nice reduction last time and hopefully may get help again, so the Immingham to Gothenburg ferry and minimum road travel definately sounds good - just not as much of an experience as running all the way out to the far side as CZ

Try Immingham to Rotterdam or Killingolme to Zeebrugge than, much less than 2k. And you could always fuel up in Luxembourg

Or Killingholme to Hook van Holland, on the Stena Line freighter.
Nice boats, no screaming kids and you don’t have to freeze if you want to smoke!
well, Immimgham to Gothenburg ferry sorted and booked - sail out on 30th April.
I understand there are no driving restrictions over the weekend in Sweden and that i need to get a vignette (same as Denmark) for the days we are using the roads over there. Is there anything else we should be aware of?
Thanks, Colin

Beer and food is expensive, so take some with you… Don’t drink to much on the ferry, you will most likely be breathalysed as you come off at Göteborg.
Thanks for the advice - are the police pretty hot then? Likely to be stopped reguarly as a foreign truck? I always chain the tractors down with chains and dogs but the trailer, whilst legal and tested, looks a bit tired - likely to attract unwanted attention?
