Has anyone considered that even if we closed our borders to all immigrants AND deported all those already here (totally impractical btw) - we’d still be swamped by all those trucks coming here that get driven by those that do not live, or intend STAYING here.
A far easier way of turning this crappy situation to our advantage therefore, is to charge per day per foreign plated vehicle in this country, regardless of it being “on road or not”. If it’s inside the UK - You pay a £10 per day charge.
If you can’t beat 'em - at least let’s end the austerity for the rest of us by soaking them, so that only the best-heeled will consider coming here to visit or live in the first place.
Once upon a time - you had to be fairly wealthy to be a “tourist” of any description.
Assuming anyone is familiar with driving in the old Yugoslavia at least they’d need to be blind and deaf and a raving socialist to not notice that there are historic ‘issues’ in the case of east european and at least Turkish driving standards.The Russian dash cam footage confirms similar to date.
As for sorting out the ridiculous inbalance in the amount of British registered trucks and/or British drivers transporting our imports and exports,it seems obvious that we need a quota system,which makes it compulsory,for at least 50% of loads leaving and entering the country have go on a British registered truck.As for leaving the EU and thereby denying/removing work permits to east European labour here as we choose,including on a retrospective basis,where’s the problem.Bearing in mind the issue of British drivers losing their work permit status in New Zealand on a retrospective basis.
It seems obvious to who? In order for 50% of loads entering the country to be on UK trucks, we’d need to have a huge fleet of trucks spread across Europe ready to collect them, and all the other countries in Europe would have to give us priority over their own vehicles. The only thing that’s obvious is what a stupid suggestion it is.

Status quo generally means leaving things as they are which seems a fair description of what you’re saying.

I"m a female driver, have been for 20 years next year, I"m out all week every week Tramping on a curtain side Artic. Everywhere I collect and deliver, and every truck stop I stay at, I hear the same conversation over and over…British drivers, shunters and warehouse staff always complaining about the foreign drivers that can"t drive!! They can!t drive because they have never had training nor sat a test…They brag about buying their fake HGV licences for peanuts in their home countries, then come over here and they are allowed to drive for British Companies on these fake licences. We all know its happening and it"s about time we got together to stop this happening.

I am not insinuating in any way that ALL Foreign Drivers working in this country are doing so on fake Licences, and those that have legitimately trained and gained their HGV Licences in their home countries should have no reservations about repeating the test here!!!
Belive me you would not pass a test in many EE countries.
I think the only answer is for companies to do proper licence checks with the licence agency of the issuing country, and not just rely on the card they’ve been handed. I think it’s quite easy to do in the UK and I’m sure it’s not impossible for other European countries.

You said it, and yes, we definitely cant tar all the foreign drivers with the same brush. Some of the finest drivers Ive encounbtered have come from eastern Europe. Whats really required is police on the roads to weed out the bad drivers of any nationality.

Your figures aren’t the problem…I’ve never disputed that there’s imbalance, and if you read posts properly you’d realise that.
Your fantasy of the rest of Europe willingly giving us half of there UK bound loads is the problem. Your idea that the British transport industry could cope with all this extra work is the problem. You call it a 50% quota, but a quota has to be agreed by both sides, and can you really see the French going for that? What you suggest is impractical, unworkable, illogical and illegal. And if you can’t see how ridiculous your proposal is…I’m afraid that is YOUR problem.
