Petition department of transport taco 70 mph

In the mid 80’s we were limited to 100kmh that was plenty fast enough at full weight ! Can’t see govt or any other transport related organisation lifting us upto 100 km let alone 70 mph ,they simple don’t want trucks on our roads ! only magicians to magic everything on to the shop shelves !!

Bad planning causes late deliveries, another 4 mph won’t help you

Well i came across an accident on wednesday 2 trailers 1 overtaking and back end clipped the other ,me reckons a bit more throttle and it may not of happened plus 14 mph over 8 hours could make a huge difference in a country so small also i reckons if Merkel , Tusk and Juncker want to remove our free trade Theresa May could shock them with a suggestion that British transport moving at 70mph will be speeding up the British economy .A driver could theoretically drive an exra 100 - 112 miles per working day ■■ 8 hours @ 56mph = 448 miles
8 hours at 70 mph = 560 miles so either way it could cut driver hours down and also prevent some drivers having to go into a second days driving and could deter some drivers breaking other taco laws and rules , obviously my opinion is only going to appeal to British drivers and i dont expect any Euro drivers to be in agreement although when driving in Britain maybe we should make European drivers drive under EU legislation therefor strenghening our Brexit position lol.

Is Theresa May going to get on to Scania Volvo MAN DAF Renault to get the trucks re-engineered so that they are designed to run at 70mph all the time?

And if they did redesign the trucks to run at 70, and return 8-9 to the gallon, the op would be moaning that the foreigners have an advantage because their trucks limited to 56 can return 12 mpg

I wonder what the extra stopping distance would be at 70 mph and 44t?
Doesn’t bear thinking about when 44t at 70 goes through central reservation to collide with a coach full of school kids going at 70 the opposite way.
I do enough miles as it is thank you!

Speaking on an entirely personal note…

This idea simply wouldn’t be a good idea for the reason that I think everything would still happen as it does now, BUT the accidents would be more frequent and happen at higher speeds, which would result in more deaths and general carnage, and cause even longer delays than we get now.

I’m from the pre-limiter days, but there’s far more traffic on the roads now, and IMHO the average car driver is more clueless now than they were back then.

IMHO the disadvantages of this idea far outweigh the advantages, so I’m not signing because it’s simply a no-brainer (to me) and I’ll go as far as to predict that when this hoo-hah ends, the person who put forward the original idea will have received a nicely democratic reality check.

I’m more than happy at 56 with my double deck trailer on thanks much

What surprises me is that anyone would think that speeding up lorries will speed up UK growth

No, but think about all that extra time you can spend waiting to get tipped! :grimacing:

So the argument presumably then goes along the lines that drivers have become more productive so deserve more pay? Meanwhile fuel costs go up, maintenance costs go up and everyone gets there a couple of minutes earlier to sit in the same queue to unload.

Will never happen.
Even if they get enough signatures to force a “debate”, it will get knocked on the head pretty quickly.
The reason given for leaving it at 56 will be to keep the regulations “in uniform with europe”. We wont be legally obliged but it will be easier for guys driving here from abroad and vice versa.
Besides which, its easier to make tea at 56mph as its relatively slow. Or root around your bag for your sarnies.

I’m now waiting for the OP to come back with the standard reply in these situations where people disagree with them “No wonder why truck drivers get treated so badly, when they don’t stick together”

To be fair though, everyone IS sticking together. They all think its a bad idea!

I think this is a terrible idea.

I know  but it’s normally lost on the OP’s when they trot out that line and what they really mean is you’re all [zb]'s because you disagree with me.

Have you seen the standard of driving in this country? I had a double deck trunker nearly run me off the road at the M1/M18 interchange because he’s too busy messing on his phone this morning. People can’t drive safely at 56, you think being able to drive at 70 would solve this? Could you imagine the carnage that would ensue if we did the same speed as most motorway traffic?

I thought the lorries were governed to 56mph or there abouts to be the most fuel efficient? as already said you’d end up with much bigger fuel and maintenance bill’s as a result of higher speeds and apart from night trunking when would you really see the benefit of it?
The OP say’s it would give us an an advantage over the rest of Europe but would it not actually be more suited to use those sort speeds and maintain them in the more sparsely populated and larger countries across the water?, were there normally seems there a lot less roadworks and speed restrictions? I think when reading some expat posts that they can put the heel to the steel a fair old bit over there, in the bigger less populated countries such as Canada or America ■■

just my thoughts mind!

Assuming that I have the right guy, is an Antique Dealer who does a bit of courier work at the weekend, so why he would have any interest in raising the hgv speed limit is beyond me

Or in some cases, watch the telly :unamused:
It’s safer to watch the telly, look for your sarnies, talk on the fone and eat a taco at 56. I’m no expert but I’m lead to believe the supermarkets knock it back to 50 to save fuel,if so it’s a non-starter in that department at least

So basically the forum admits bus drivers are better drivers an can handle a more valuable load at higher speeds!

Its bad enough having to stop 44 ton at 56 mph, if you think 70mph is the way forward, I suggest you give your head a wobble!!

He drives a Transit for his lifestyle courier work so an HGV doing 70 wouldn’t make him look so bad when he hurtles by at 90 :unamused:
