0slinter quarry .
I used to dread tipping waste there, “Get closer to the edge driver” was the usual command and after that lad got killed I was very wary of the place as it was usually like a skating rink. I needed crawler gear to get up out of the blooming quarry when I was (usually over) loaded as well, I took Frank Gough down into there one day when I worked for him and Eric to get a load for MOT testing and his comment was “You should get a medal for running in and out of here lad” but he never ever gave me one!!
Pete.
Not now Pete ,they put the waste through a screen ,must be to get the recycled aggregate ?
got this today ,it’s a poor copy but good any way .

■■■■■■■■ Daniel! I never smashed a lorry up. You are correct about the first pic (North Yorkshire) but wrong on t’other. Not a Midlands lorry, though Jim Banks did do something similar at the bottom of Hipley Bank in snow and ice!

Don’t blame you Pete, those cheeky young pups up in those hills would get a person hung! I never had a Foden that old anyway but we did have a few that got ‘bent’ in various mishaps, thankfully with no serious injuries, and almost all were repaired and put back on the road again. I did write a couple of cars off with my truck but it was their fault, not mine, and the truck came to no harm.

Shouldn’t you say a couple of cars wrote them selves off ?

Well I suppose they did Dan! The lad was badly injured in the accident I had at Clifton and I honestly thought he had croaked, but he survived fortunately. His Montego was a mess though, and I caught one of the Ambulance staff pocketing his music tapes from the glove box (“Looking for the lads glasses” was his excuse) and threatened to report him if he didn’t replace them. “The breakdown lads will have them anyway” he said but I made him put them back. The nearside cab step on my Foden was bent, the tyre was slightly damaged (it went flat the following day at Sudbury!) and all the rear lights and mudguard on one side were smashed but the police let me continue to Small Heath and back as long as I repaired them before my next trip. He hit my body on the nearside rear corner with his offside screen pillar (I was stationary in a queue of traffic) and shot up the bank, hit the golf club fence, came back down again and ended up buried in my front corner. However, due to the location of his car, everyone passing on their way back to Ballidon thought that I had hit him and I got a right rollicking from Tom Wibberley and ■■■■ Bentley when I got back to the quarry, I also lost my safe driving bonus for that year as well!
Pete.
Not a Peak District Tilcon lorry Pete, probably from North Yorkshire.

Yes I just noticed the estate agents board after I posted Pete. Probably a load from Skipton Rock, though most likely the lorry was based at Swinden quarry. We didn’t cover that area from Ballidon, although when Skipton Rock were busy on the M61 resurfacing we did occasionally take tarmac to a few utility companies in the Leeds, Burnley and Bradford area.

One from Chapel and a Tilcon for Pete
An old school friends Dad drove for Spencers from Dove Holes, Norman (Norry) Storer. They parked at a now demolished building opposite the Cemex quarry.

Picture of the late Selwyn Martin (my father) driving one of Harry Askews wood shaving blower lorries, I think he ran about 7 of these at his peak collecting shavings from timber yards and delivering to farms around the area, I remember Harry quite well as I spent a lot of time up at the yard at Longcliffe as a kid with my dad, I recall they also had a yard at Riddings Alfreton and ran quite a few artics from there, He must have employed a fair few people at one time would be nice to see any other photos if anybody has any
MANAGED TO CLEAN THIS UP BUT NOT BY ANY MEANS PERFECT BUT WILL KEEP ON WITH IT
