The last s39 I drove in 1979 before the e290 arctic arrived . The driver in that shot is Stuart ? , can’t recall his surname now , he was a signalman on the railway and went back to that later . It was a good lorry , went well ( for a Gardner ) and was a late model with the auxiliary switch in the top of the gear lever , now , what did I have for breakfast ? Dave

Still going strong - Bill Ratcliffe passed away some years ago, but the company still operates from the same yard at Coton-in-the Clay (hence ‘Pride of Coton’ in the second picture) run by his sons, as far as I am aware.

Looks good in fact better than good.Isn’t one of John Nelsons next to it.

When I was a very little lad ( not much bigger now ) Bill Ratcliffe had a Ford 7V and used to fill up at Atkeys garage in Uttoxeter. They had a chap that worked for them and Jack Pattinson looking after their motors called Jim Wilson.Nothing to do with the Ratcliffes and Jack but he was killed in a very terrible accident. He was helping load a digger I think and it fell over on to him and a shock to every one.

You might guess who he is on this photo

Best looking Foden for me. drove L reg with 9spd n VRA 39K with 12spd both tippers

Oldies from around the Peaks (photos Jim Wilson)

Cracking photos John , I like the first one , driver wearing the obligatory army tunic , everyone wore them then they were about 5 bob from the army surplus . The shot of longson’s ql spreader takes me back a bit , he had loads of ql ex army all retrofitted with Gardner lk engines , they were still on the road well after I started driving in '63 . Dave

I’ve just been watching a documentary about the old Mam Tor road. As I didn’t arrive in this part of the world until after it was closed I wondered if any of you could tell me if there was any indication of just how dangerous it was becoming?
