Mention of Cubley reminded me of the time i passed the Howard Arms heading south, must have been at the end of the 60s
The road between the pub and Springfield garage was still little more than a lane, or so it seemed.
We used to call it the Cubley Snake.
A short distance in and i came across a Barlow and Hodgekinson Foden 8 legger on the brow of a rise with the front modified.
Sat on top of the hedge in front of it was a ,i believe, a Austin Maxi, remember them.? and another rep mobile parked behind it.
In fact i think the Maxi was new and the first one i had seen. The Maxi driver had taken a hefty smack in the teeth and was bleeding down his shirt.
Now, it just so happened that this very same pair of cars had overtaken me on a blind bend at the top of Clifton Hill, the old twisty hill before it was bypassed, both where driving like idiots.
The Barlow driver told me that the pair where trying to blame him for the accident, each backing the other up of course.
Well my arrival on the scene and my description of the pairs antics the other side of the old airfield put a different take on things.
I dont remember the Barlow drivers name, though we passed each other countless times afterwards. I do remember that he always seemed to wear distinctive check shirts.
I have a vague notion that someone told me he was actually German and his name may have been Dave.
That could be a senior moment though.
Ring any bells with anyone ■■
Don Wain kept the Howard Arms for a while

and now Think Ronnie Wood lives there from whatever groupe he was in .He costomises the Doveridge Post Office now and again

Was that the same Don Wain,(Wayne) that had a Seddon 13/4 ?, dark blue i think it was.
Well ! I never knew Joseph Hoyle had a depot in Matlock.
Where abouts was their yard ?
Toft Brothers and Tomlinsons (North Derbyshire Engineering, N.O.R.D.E) old garage, on the A6 just past Firth Derihons. Now a car repair shop etc and Matlock Transport use the yard.

I thought it was off the A6 opersite strutts where the race car transporter parks ?
When dave seppman’s dad first came up to buxton he was driving for joseph hoyle if i remember right . He used to park in the lorry park by the roundabout

Now then you Derbryshire an Staffordshire lads there are other folk you might remember. I.E. Harry Askew,Josh Swindle ( Died fately in a crash at Cubley) and Selwyne Martin who worked for Harry and took over the business and now Peak Waste. And didn’t Don Loundes run one of the drinking establishments round the Brassington district.
Thought of this while having a little tipple.

Picture of the late Selwyn Martin (my father) driving one of Harry Askews wood shaving blower lorries, I think he ran about 7 of these at his peak collecting shavings from timber yards and delivering to farms around the area, I remember Harry quite well as I spent a lot of time up at the yard at Longcliffe as a kid with my dad, I recall they also had a yard at Riddings Alfreton and ran quite a few artics from there, He must have employed a fair few people at one time would be nice to see any other photos if anybody has any

There was quite a lot of shall I say Harry, not likng Josh very much.Harry said he was responsible for the blowing system on his motors and I was not to say anything about this eqipment to anyone particulaly Josh.He had a couple of D-Series from me and they went to Martin Harper ( Guilford I think) to have the P.T.O.Drives fitted.I might be wrong about the P. T O’s we picked them up and I think Harry had the body fitted or fitted himself.Painted blue.
The Howard Alms was run by the Don Wain we all loved and I think there was a Sellers from Ashbourne ran it too.A lot of Sellers in that in Ashbourne . I bet Sid Sellers comes to mind with a lot of you lads.Played cricket for Oakover Park and he used to water one end of the wicket I’m told as he was a spin bowler.
Round here the Howard Alms road is known as Cubley Stoop but I can understand the Snake bit. It’s still a bad road whatever it’s called.I reckon the farmer does o.k. out of the hedge insurrance
Great photos ,I remember my dad saying how bad the snow on the 515 was ,once it took him and Frank Dale all day to go and load lime ,at this time I think 1975 ish Frank had a 8 wheeler Foden and my dad a mk2 Atki 8 wheeler ,apparently the holes on the snow were so bad they broke plenty of springs .
